How was everyone's weekend?

Re: How was everyone's weekend?

  • We moved FI's grandmother's stuff this weekend - she's 90 and has to go from her assisted-living place to a nursing home this week thanks to some increasing health issues - but the unexpected benefit of that was we ended up with a new navy leather couch and I got to replace this awful futon we've had since university. I'm thrilled.

Sounds like you guys had nice weekends!  Congrats on your new car @cilmbingwife!

My weekend was busy and not as much fun.  I pretty much did homework all weekend.  My FI and I also house sat and pet sat his sister's dogs and his parent's house.  Friday night I was working on homework.  I managed to sneak in an episode of Reaper with my FI and then went back to work.

Saturday I was doing homework pretty much all day until we went out for dinner for Valentine's Day.  On the way back, we had an interesting experience with my FI's car.  We were almost to his parents house on a quiet neighborhood street so we were not going too fast, maybe 25-30 mph.  He pushed down on he gas a little bit more and the engine started revving and the car was accelerating beyond his control.  He pushed on the brakes, but they weren't working.  He changed gears, but the engine was still revving.  We could smell the burn from tires.  My FI was insistent on me getting out of the car in case he were to lose absolutely any control.  I was so panic stricken that I could not think clearly myself. He was able to slow down enough so that I could get out.  He then put it into park, but it continued to move ahead slightly and rev up.  Luckily, the car was not going fast at this point.  Finally, he turned off the car which seemed to stop the car from moving, but the engine still revved.  When it had settled, he put it in neutral and pushed the car while I directed it into the driveway.  About a half hour later, he tried turning the car on again and it was working just fine.  So weird.  His car is a Toyota, which had those massive recalls for unintentional acceleration a few years back.  His car year was during the years that they had been recalled.  He has never had anything like that happen to him before.

So yeah, that was interesting and scary.

We hung out and cuddled the rest of the night.

Sunday I went back to doing homework.  I am kind of procrastinating right now because this is more fun than kinesiology.

I am really glad FFIL is getting that taken care of today.

  • Sounds like almost everyone had a good weekend.  My kids competed Saturday in the City Championships, which was their goal to win from the start of the year.  We've been working them hard too for it.  They hit a perfect clean routine and won, so now they're city champions!!  I'm so proud of them.

DH then took me to the Symphony and dinner for V Day, which we don't normally celebrate.  We were in be super early too from such a long day.  Sunday was spent on the couch watching tv.  I didn't get dress or put on make-up.  It was glorious.  Much the same for today, though we do need to get out for groceries.  DH is downstairs starting up breakfast.  Whoop!!

  • Our weekend was pretty good, after the initial fear-response to the 2015 State of the Nation address on Thursday night. Seriously, our president is a joke, our cabinet is a bunch of muppets, and the country is not going to get any better under the rule of a party that thinks that disallowing the sale of land to foreign nationals is the way to right the wrongs of the past.

We spent most of Friday and Saturday with my mom (who is doing fantastically well, has dropped I don't know how many dresses sizes, and is looking stunning with her newly grown ice and steel grey hair!), then hung out with a bunch of friends on Saturday night, eating far too much mediterranean food and drinking bubble tea. Mom left on Sunday to visit my grandparents for a couple of days, and we spent the day recovering from Saturday. We also managed to pick up a TON of PC games on special, so our nerdlust is ALMOST sated for now. (Can the nerdlust ever truly be sated?)

And then as we were leaving the city around lunch time today, MIL called to say that DH's dog had had a bad episode this morning and the vet had had to put him to sleep. :(

Thanks @falsara!  It could have been so much worse.  I am glad that we weren't on the highway!  My FFIL told my FI to take his car instead since he didn't want my FI driving it until he brought it into the dealer.  So, my FFIL is taking care of that today while my FI drives his dad's car to work, which is super nice of him.  I think FFIL is taking it into a Toyota dealer or something and he thinks that they will just take care of it because of all the lawsuits brought against Toyota for the unintentional acceleration accidents.  We will see, but that is so nice of FFIL to take care of that for us!
they'll fix it free of charge since it is a recall but can only be done at the brand dealer. EX: GM recalls at any GM dealers, Honda at any Honda dealer Toyota at a Toyota dealer.

  • Holiday today -yeah!  Weekend was decent, my cat is still at the vet's.  She's incredibly ill, and the vet has no idea why.  She wanted to have her on fluids and antibiotics via IV, but her blood pressure skyrocketed so they can't give her meds or fluids that way.  She's been blind, too, which the vet said could be from the high blood pressure, although she doesn't have detached retinas or blown pupils, so it could be temporary.  She's doing better today, I just finished visiting with her, and she got down to walk around and she was navigating the trash can and stuff, so I think she can at least see shapes and stuff.  Her little heart was racing though, so we put her back in her cage.  The vet's doing a thyroid test today to see if maybe that's what is wrong.  She thinks it's an infection of some sort, but has no idea what - she's tossed out encephalitis and meningitis or a brain tumor, but those are VERY costly MRI tests where she'd have to be sent away to have done.  Hopefully the meds and stuff will continue to work.

SQUEEEE, congrats on your new vehicle @climbingwife!! Heated seats are the bomb.

My brother was feeling homesick this past week, so Mom, Dad & I loaded up the car Friday afternoon & made the 10 hour journey from Alabama to North Chicago to see him for like, a day and a half (talk about family LOVE).

Saturday morning, we picked him up from base at like 7:30AM then went & had some breakfast. Then I convinced my dad to drive into Chicago so we could go to the John Hancock Tower (we're super tourists when we go on vacation, it's super fun). So he drove us down there and we walked around for a little while and holy freaking crap it was cold.

Brother seemed to be in a much better mood now that we were with him. He was smiling the whole time & saying "I don't care what we do, I'm just glad y'all are here". He's such a good dude.

When we got to the John Hancock tower, we did the whole "Tilt" thing where you stand on this platform thing & they tilt you out 30 degrees above the Magnificent Mile. I'm not too scared of heights really, so I was all over this. It was super fun and we got cute stickers for doing it.

We walked around Michigan Avenue for a little while (as much as we could stand, I think it was literally 0 degrees that day), then we decided to head back to Great Lakes & have an early dinner and just hang out in our hotel room for a while.

Yesterday we got to have breakfast with brother again and hang out with some of his new Navy buds before we left. We left Great Lakes right at 12:30 and didn't get home til about 1:30AM, it was absolutely the worst road trip experience I've ever had. It took us about 3 hours to get out of Chicago. I told mom & dad that if we take another weekend trip to see him, we're definitely flying.

I'm absolutely exhausted at work today & FI wants me to come do Crossfit with him after work, but I don't see that happening. Maybe I can convince him to just come over & watch TV with me :)
