Promise rings?

Was it an expensive ring?  Like I wouldn't my my SO to spend the money on a ring that's not the real ring, I would rather he wait and give me the real one.  Especially if you're in your late 20s or older.  To me promise rings are really only for teenagers.  Though one of my colleagues has a promise ring and she's my age.

It was a very simple ring, with a small diamond.  When I thought it was an engagement ring I thought it was lovely! It fits her style, and if he picked it out alone quite honestly he deserves a major pat on the back because it is VERY much her.

When I found out it was a promise ring, well we all know how that panned out.  It seems like the perfect ring for her, so I don't know how you go from the perfect promise ring at 33 to what? I feel like any other ring at this point is a step down. 

So he uses the same ring?  Gets an identical ring?  Picks out a less perfect ring? Somehow manages to find two perfect rings in one lifetime?? Maybe she picked it out?  I'm so confused. 

It is literally the ring I would have pictured in my head for her. Imagine a proposal where he pulls out the ring, and she is so stunned with how perfect it is for her that she's speechless.  Yeah, that's this ring.  Where do you go from there?!?!

@nowittyusername - Maybe he will just "size up"? I don't know, that seems very odd.  If I were her, I would be confused and a little upset.  It's almost like he can't grow up enough to actually do it for real. My colleague who has a promise ring it's not a diamond ring, it doesn't look like an engagement ring, only that she wears it on her left ring finger and she's told me what it was. If I didn't know better I would have assumed it was just a ring she was wearing on her left hand.

Maybe he will get her a band to go around the ring for the e-ring and then another band for the wedding ring or perhaps he'll size up or maybe he'll just tell her to use her promise ring as an e-ring?  Who knows!  It's just weird.

My bf (now fi) bought me a ring in high school when we were 16 and it wasn't even a promise ring then, it was a "ring because I love you ring." He was always so sensible  I wore it on my right hand until my twenties when it would only fit on my left hand.  It felt weird to me, like an imposter because it was pretty enough to be an engagement ring (blue sapphire with 3 tiny diamonds on each side) but it wasn't.  However, I can't wait until our daughter is old enough to have it!
