Show me your dream kitchen finishings

Re: Show me your dream kitchen finishings

  • I go back and forth so much on my dream kitchen surfaces.

My first dream kitchen is warm white cabinets with a little bit of a rustic red finish (pure white cabinets bug the shit out of me), seaglass blue subway tile back splash, Cherry hardwood floors, and a lightish neutral quartz counters with a copper farmhouse sink. But then I also want an island with a butcher block surface, and I'm afraid white cabinets of any kind will look stupid and dated in ten years. But then cherry cabinets wouldn't look good with a butcher block island. And a copper sink with cherry cabinets is out, so do I do a white one then?

I mean, doesn't really matter, because I just rattled off two kitchens that would cost more than we make in a year, but still.

Terra cotta floors? (Reverse the colors of the cabs and backsplash)

  • It always grinds my gears when people say black granite. Sorry geology person here! Granite is a felsic rock ( light minerals like quartz, feldspars, some micas, ect) and not mafic ( dark color minerals like hornblende, pyroxenes, olivine, ect). Black granite countertops are actually a gabbro rock. Also marble is very soft because its full of calcite so it can bubble under acid like fruit acid and be scratch very easily. So when V and I get a house, we will definitely put quartz in. We also were hoping to find a really interesting countertop with fossils in it but that hasn't happen yet. Plus we would be very lucky if we ever did find that.

Here is my dream kitchen. I would replace the stainless steel with white because I just hate how it looks personally.    Montalba Architects mid century modern house - ceiling and flooring.

I would have open shelving like this

open shelving with vintage pyrex #DFKitchenInspiration

This would be my dinning room.

    Or this

    round table and light pendant

Basically I want a house full of light and color ha.

  • Oh I've also had dark stained wood floors before.... never again.  In addition to keeping it looking clean, even the smallest of scratches is way more apparent.  The best floors I've had in terms of maintenance were just natural stained oak.  The ones I have right now are birch with a natural matte finish and they look awesome when clean but I have to mop them often to keep them that way due to the matte finish.

The wood floors are a natural color now (below), newly refinished... throughout the living room, dining room, and bedrooms. (Family room is carpet, which I prefer.) It'll definitely be tile in the kitchen and foyer so we don't have to worry about wet boots, overflowing dishwashers, spills, scratches, etc. I just want them to be either light enough or dark enough tile that it doesn't look like it's trying to match.

    OMG THIS ONE.

And what I'd love to do with our extra bedroom

I NEED that closet. I wonder if FI would let me do that with our extra bedroom..it's currently an "office", which is really a dumping ground for all our extra stuff and it drives me nuts.

I like that particular terra cotta, but in general that color on kitchen floors reminds me of my grandma's super-old linoleum (shaped like bricks, of all things!). So it's a weird combination of nostalgia and visceral NOPE! (Love my grandma. Hated her kitchen floor).

A shame, since I actually enjoy that color and tile is great.

  • This is my kitchen currently. We didn't do anything to it when we moved in, although I wish some of the colors were lighter and I do wish it was a lot larger.

Your backsplash looks almost exactly the same as mine! If you want to brighten it up without re-painting it a lighter color you could always put in little LED lights underneath the cabinets to light up the countertops.

Actual brick, brick-like tiles that are actually separate from each other? Yay! Shiny linoleum that is clearly meant to look "brick-ish" but is clearly one big sheet? Nope.

ETA: If I'm being honest though, I prefer my brick on walls. And it has to be real! I have a lot of rules, apparently.

Well I'm with you on that. We're ripping out the faux-granite linoleum. Barf.

It's relatively new, too. Who installs new linoleum?!

  • Also I'm saying no to brick of any sort on the floor because it's a bitch to get get. I mean, by virtue of being rough, you never know if you actually got all the dirt up!

I love brick in some places, but not my floor.

Yeah, the only time I want brick actually under my feet is when it's a patio. And even then I prefer decks.

I don't mind tile if it's grouted well, but I'm with you on the difficulty of cleaning brick.

  • So, lolo are you free to come to the beach with me soon? I will show you the fabulous ways of fil's kitchen that looks exactly like that white and mint/aqua one you posted. Like so much so that I had to study it to make sure it wasn't actually their kitchen!

  • @pinkrevenge I really like that. I love the creamy, distressed off-white cabinets over the stark pure white ones for sure.

That "brick" floor is really a terra cotta tile, so it's probably a bit easier to clean. :)

@lurkergirl I can be packed for the beach in like 10 minutes. But then your FILs will have a squatter problem.

  • Haha, I feel like if H and I built a house we would just build a kitchen with a house around it. I mean, give me endless money and I can get insanely picky, down to the pulls and light switches, but the kitchen is basically #1 and everything else comes after that.

H and I turned away from a perfect location apartment with a beautiful sun room because the kitchen was literally an old sink with an apartment fridge rubbing against it and an apartment stove so close that you couldn't open the oven door and still stand in the kitchen. Hahahahahha, NOPE. We wouldn't have stayed there if the rest of the place was a penthouse.

LOL I asked Jake if we could have a 2000 square foot kitchen with some bedrooms attached. When we have people over, NOBODY LEAVES THE KITCHEN. They just stand there salivating, staring at me, waiting for more food.

  • All this kitchen porn! I love it so much I can hardly handle myself!

Personally, I am obsessed with pot racks. I am also obsessed with pretty, high-end pots (All-Clad, Le Creuset, Staub, copper...)
  • ugh, who has these GORGEOUS kitchens?! I want them.

We just bought a ridiculously expensive house (damn NY real estate) that has the fanciest stainless steel Viking range with a matching double oven that makes me drool.

However, the backsplash is THIS. Seriously, a chain of early American Pilgrim farmers is ALL around my kitchen. I really want some glass subway tile but we need to add this to our (ever-growing) to-do list.

  • These kitchens are magnificent. I love the pictures in the OP. When we were house shopping FI and I discovered our kitchen taste is slightly different. He liked darker surfaces and cabinets. I liked lighter. Weirdly, the house we bought has a compromise between the two -- dark cabinets with white marble counters. We probably wouldn't have chosen the marble ourselves, because of the care difficulties, but it is really lovely and while we notice some discoloration it's not a huge deal. The only things I would change right now would be adding some back splash (I can't figure out what color?) and putting a gas stove in to replace the induction one we have.

I'm attaching some pics of the kitchen and the dining area (open concept). The best part of our house is the back deck, which flows from the dining room. I love how open that whole area is, but I also love that our living room is around the corner and not open into all of that. I feel like sometimes open concept gets taken a bit too far for my taste. I kinda want to be able to leave dishes in the sink and not have to see them from the couch...
