16 days to go...

I have 16 days to go until my wedding  (YAY)! And the last thing I have to do is write my vows. Every time I start, I go blank. Can't think of a single thing. My fiancé is totally a writer, so I know his vows are going to be very poetic and awesome. Any tips? Did any of you write your own vows? How did you get started? I need a nudge in the right direction!

  • I didn't, but maybe start by writing down all of the things you love about him??  It might give you something to start with.  Also, think about things unique to the two of you.  While we didn't write vows, we did get to say something personal to the other during the ceremony.  Mine included something along the line of marrying him cos my cousin spilled the secret family recipe for Granny's corn and also how he would also love me three weeks more than I loved him cos he said it first.  It was stuff that was unique to us, and almost a bit of an inside joke

Our minister gave us great advice. He told us to choose a few things that we wanted to promise to one another and then we put them in our own words. We chose to love, trust, "in good times and in bad", respect, and to be faithful. I liked that we were promising each other the same things. Throw in a sentence or two at the beginning and a wrap up line at the end and you're done. I'd stay away from inside jokes and I think a lot of people forget to make promises and instead just talk about why they love them. Start your sentences with things like...I promise, I vow, I will, etc.
  • Did you see that on this website there's an area with sample vows? That can serve as some inspiration.

  • I definitely understand the vow-writing stress! I thought we were decided on NOT writing our own vows, and then my FI sprung it on me that he really wanted to. So now we are. Yikes!

I started a thread on the topic a while back, and the advice I got was so extremely helpful! Here it is, in case you want to skim through and get some of the examples and tips posted there:
