Do you like root beer?

edited April 2015 in Chit Chat
I went to Burger King - where you can have it your way, but never right the first time - and ordered a "Barq's Root Beer." Over the PA I hear, "I don't have that, I got regular root beer." I respond, "Yes, regular root beer please. Thanks." I had said Barq's root beer bc some of the BK's around here have the Coke Freestyle thing and you have to specify.

So I pull around the the window is already open and the cashier is yelling to her coworker, "Only corn fed white folks like root beer!" She looks at me and says, "not you. No offense, I just hate root beer."

Then the guy she was yelling at comes over to the window, looks at me and says "I knew what you meant, I gotcha."

She starts going on about how customers would order Mr. Pibb and she would give them Barq's bc she didn't know what Mr. Pibb was. "I finally figured out they wanted Dr. Pepper. Why don't they order that - who's ever heard of Mr Pibb?? I don't know what Barq's is either." I just stared at her dumbfounded, waiting for my credit card back.

I thought it was odd to say the least. But it got me wondering - who likes root beer?

For the record, I love all root beer, but in most instances I will only order caffeinated root beer unless it's a root beer float. :-9

Re: Do you like root beer?

  • So... I generally don't like root beer. I HATE Barq's, but could tolerate the occasional A&W. Apparently Tidbit likes root beer though because I've been drinking a ton of it since I got pregnant. Lemonade, too. Weird kid.

Only with ice cream in it.

ETA: I'm laughing at "Only corn fed white folks like root beer!"

  • I actually don't like Barq's, but I like other brands of root beer. Not sure why but Barq's just tastes different to me.

  • A root beer sounds so good right now. I have acid reflux problems, so I stay away from pop, but maybe I could deal with it for a day for a root beer or, even better, for a root beer float.
  • I love A&W, but I hate Barq's.  And that drive thru lady is dumb.  Mr. Pibb rocks, and iI'd choose it over Dr. Pepper any day!

  • I can't remember if it's Barq's or A&W, but I like one and don't like the other. I think I like Barq's. But root beer is usually not my drink of choice anyway.

Sounds like you get a similar reaction to what I get when I order unsweet tea.

  • I love most rootbeer. Specifically IBC or when places have it on draft. YUM so good! But I don't like Barqs either!

  • Root beer is actually the only brown soda that I will drink. I hate coke, pepsi, dr. pepper.

Now here in New England, we love our ginger ale. Pretty much all restaurants have it on tap. When I lived in AZ people thought I was insane for trying to order it. They were like "Um, we don't have that...you only drink that when you're sick". Travesty I tell you.

Oh, I know that one! LOL
DH had to repeat himself at least twice when he would order unsweetened iced tea in Savannah! They looked like him like he was crazy, until they heard my order next of a "half cut tea" - their heads 'bout spun all the way around ;)

HA! Funny you mentioned that. I literally had a ginger ale this morning (but it was b/c I had an upset stomach). But H drinks it all the time.

I've learned at drive-thrus to confirm it's unsweet before I drive away. More than once the person pauses, takes it back, and pours me another one.

When I get root beer floats I ask them to hold the root beer. So...icecream.  All I want is the icecream.

  • I am not a pop drinker, but I don't hate root beer.
  • Only if it's real root beer made with cane sugar.  Then drop some vanilla ice cream in it and I am in heaven.

  • I love root beer SO MUCH, and while I accept any and all incarnations, it is a scientific fact that Sprecher root beer is the best of them all.

This baby knows exactly how I feel
  • I love all root beer except Dad's brand. That one sucks.
  • I love root beer so much that when I got married the first time I called the family up that makes the old fashioned A&W root beer from scratch at our state fair and asked them if I could buy root beer for my wedding. They declined. I was crushed - but my ex was a douchecanoe, so I'm glad they declined or my favorite beverage would forever been ruined.

jenna8984  whenever Vernors is on sale I stock up on it - second favorite soda!

  • I loooove root beer. And I don't discriminate, they're all delicious to me. But I love a really good one in a bottle.

  • I don't like it at all, hate the smell and the taste. Most people think I'm weird for not liking it

The BK lady, wow. Not only the racist comment but sheesh I would hope you would ask someone what Mr Pibb or Barqs were if people keep ordering it so you don't make them mad by giving them the wrong drink
  • I usually only drink root beer when I can get it from the root beer stand in my hometown that makes their own recipe. It's amazing!

  • We have a local brewery that makes root beer (as well as normal beer) and it is really good. It blows all the other root beers out of the water. It's made with vanilla, star anise and other herbs. So good!

I just looked up what that is cuz I've never heard of it before... now I'm really curious to try it. When I was a kid, it was a big deal to get a Brown Cow (Coca-Cola with vanilla ice cream... at first I just put "coke" but then I was like "hm... being excited about coke and ice cream sounds like an 80s drug binge....")

1919 is my root beer of choice. I love root beer!

Also: Vernors and gin is probably the best thing you could ever drink.

Also: the BK lady was kind of racist. :|

  • I actually prefer Birch Beer. Or Dr Pepper.

But A&W is right up there too.

Of course Pepsi wins over everything.

  • I love root beer, but not Barq's. And not with ice cream. Diet root beer always disappoints so I save regular for 'special' occasions.  I love gingerale but not Vernor's (it doesn't taste gingery enough).

I try to keep full sugar gingerale in the house for when I have an upset stomach. Whenever it's around, The Kid drinks it all- while complaining that we don't keep "good" soda in the house. I can drink sugar free gingerale happily all the time but it's a bit harder to find.

Iced tea can only be unsweetened.

I was constantly throwing up as a child (and now), so the taste of ginger ale make me memory-queezy. ):

And as for the OP, I like Root Beer, but prefer it with ice cream. ;)
