Except in NY where every single tax is the highest or almost the highest in the country!

Oh my gosh, I know--CW and Sarah are giving me heart palpitations!  I can't even imagine!

We pay about 11k.  NJ.  Can't stand it.

ETA - I will add, it's all relative.  DH and I make pretty decent salaries.  We can afford the 11k.  That doesn't mean it doesn't pain us to hear of others paying less.  But if we moved to a state with lower taxes, we would expect our salaries would be lower too.

That is a good caveat. And in order to make myself feel better about what we pay, I need to remind myself that our salaries are above and beyond what they would be anywhere else. I literally make twice what I would make if I had stayed in my hometown and H does really well.

It is still a lot to pay, but it is relative.

Ours are almost 5K in Dutchess County, NY.  We have a 1200 SF home with .4 acres of property.

I think they are going to go up soon, because our house was recently renovated and hasn't been assessed since before the renovations.

trust me, I would love to retire down south :) H is a New Yorker. I am a Floridian- I love it here, but it wasn't my choice.

We bought our house from a couple whose kids just finished high school. They sold and moved only a couple miles away but into a school district that kind of sucks. It cuts your property taxes basically in half and you don't even really have to leave town.

OK - assessed taxes for my parents' old property this past year were a little over $800, for ten acres with a shed on it... the caveat is that the attached picture is on the assessor's website for the house, so I suspect they're assessing it based off the lack of actual house there. So that's not super accurate.

I will say that a house in our new neighborhood with .1 acre less than us, and a smaller building by approximately 150 sq.ft, pays under $700 a year. I don't know this house's assessed tax.

ETA You can find out a shit ton of info from the tax assessor's website usually. Especially if they have the GIS system available to anyone.

Also edited for clarity. I forget words sometimes.

Although I don't own now, but we are looking to buy. It's a good reminder that we also need to factor in property taxes when we figure out what we can afford. I am so use to renting that you forgot all the little fees/taxes you need to pay on top of the mortgage.
  • @arrippa Don't forget homeowner's insurance and flood insurance (if you are in a flood prone area) too!

Our taxes are about $6,500 in a Columbus area suburb (Ohio).  We have .24 acre, 2,700 sq ft house.  Taxes are much lower in the city, but the schools are HORRIBLE so we wanted to move before we had kids.

Hi neighbor!  I just saw your taxes--I think ours will end up more along the line of yours once we are re-assessed.  We are town of Poughkeepsie with Wappingers schools.  What about you?

  • I live in the NW suburbs of Chicago. We have a 1500 square foot home on a postage stamp size lot. Our taxes are 11,000 a year. The elementary and middle schools are very good.

@lolo883 yea it sounds stupid but my dad went to UMass and I went to UMass so I would like to stay in MA so my kid could potentially go there in state lol.

Uconn is a good school too! (See my username!)

But lolo is right, CT has higher state taxes, so keep that in mind.
When did you graduate? DH and I are alumni too!

  • Everything was assessed a little higher this year and the taxes for our home are just over $2500.
It's 2 parcels because of how the village and town line sits totaling .27 acres.  The house is approximately 1200 square feet.
Taxes include town, county, village, city and school.

We live in one of the highest school taxed areas in Steuben County.  Last I checked I think it was $26/1000 sq ft?  They are actually proposing another tax hike again this year to the maximum they can.  They recently built a new high school for just over $97 mil.  There were issues with some of the materials used so now they are closing portions of the building to tear it down and rebuild.  This new school is less than a year old.

  • Heh the buyer of our old house is in for a surprise when it gets reassessed after the sale. It hasn't been assessed since H renovated the entire thing, and the market value is about $50k more than the state thinks it is. Whoopsie.

City of Poughkeepsie schools - womp womp!

I screwed up though and counted my entire escrow monthly payment.  My taxes are more like "only" $5k like yours... still ridiculous!

They didn't flat out reassess my house when I bought it, but the assessor sent me a questionnaire to "make sure they had everything right."  Yeah, like I'm going to help you reassess me!

When I was like 14 someone from the town knocked on my door and was asking about any renovations and how many bathrooms we had. I said 2. I told my dad about it when he came home and he freaked out like " we only have 1.5 bathrooms! My taxes might go up if they think it's 2!" So he called to let them know. I was like how am I supposed to know that a bathroom only counts as half?!

I didn't go to UConn, but I'm from CT. Everyone in my family went there. My husband graduated in 2000.

  • H and I pay $1600 a year in property tax for a 1700 sq ft home on half an acre. This is not the norm for our area - normally taxes are anywhere from $3k- $5k in this county for the same house. We're taxed at the village rate instead of the county rate for our house and the village rate is about 2% lower.
  • Since DH and I still rent until we can build, I had to look up property for my county (and specifically the part of the county we live in and will build in). We live in central NC in a pretty rural county. Property taxes average .53 and specifically where we live, it is .0800. I'm liking those numbers.

  • in NJ our home is 3000sq feet 3/4 of an acre I think our property tax is like $17,000.

  • Our house in Boise Idaho is 1200sqft and property taxes when we lived in it were~$1K (went up a bit when we turned it to a rental). Our house now in nothern Idaho is 3000sqft in a great neighborhood and our taxes are ~$2K.
