WTF macys

So I had some pricey stuff on my registry that was on sale for like 4 months. The sale price was a good price, so I figured macy's was like Kohl's in that they pretend everything is on sale when really it's the normal price. So they can compare it to the "regular price" and make everyone believe they are getting a deal!

So a week before my shower, my 20 dollar decorative pillows change to 80 or 100 bucks! The problem? Someone already bought the matching bedset so I can't really change what set I use. The same thing happened with my dishes.  Someone bought parts of my dish set on "sale" and now the rest has to be bought at a crazy expensive price.

I feel like I look like a greedy bitch. I have a lot of cheaper items on there! I come from an area where a usual wedding gift is 50-100 bucks unless you are really close to the couple. Nobody wants to give someone a single fucking pillow!

/vent

Don't really know what to do about it. I suppose I'll leave it and see if it goes on sale, I know nobody will want to get it if it stays that expensive. I sure as hell wouldn't. I can maybe use some cash we get to purchase the rest of the sets I registered for. I also took some of the more luxurious items and replaced them with more reasonable items. I hope I balanced it out a bit.

Fucking Macy's, man.

Re: WTF macys

  • Macy's puts stuff on sale a lot, so if you do decide to purchase it yourself I would just watch for a sale again.  Nothing to stress over, and maybe some other people have purchased some it already and just forgot to have it taken off, this happened with a bunch of stuff for DD.
  • Yea their "regular" prices really are super ridiculous. I never buy a shower gift until they have a big sale. Which....exactly like you said, a big sale is really me just getting it for what it should cost in the first place. This is why I HATE big retail stores and I buy all my stuff at places like Marshall's, but I understand you can't do that with a registry. Ugh annoying. But hey, the pillows don't need to be the exact match to the bedset, a solid complimentary color can work too!

  • From what I understand, the Friends and Family sale should be coming soon. Their sales fluctuate so much; I wouldn't stress. I had $80 sheets on there that would go on sale occasionally for $40. People will just keep scrolling past the gifts and think nothing of it. Don't worry :)

  • Macy's goes off/on sale just like Kohl's so I wouldn't sweat it.  Most people knows those places do that so I would assume someone will decide for himself/herself to not buy an $80 pillow.  Plus it'll probably be on sale again in a week
  • I get where you are coming from, but people who know you well enough to come to your shower probably know you well enough to not think you are registering for a bunch of crazy crap.

Macy's "one day sales" happen about three times a week- it will be cheaper in no time!
    image
  • I've noticed the same thing on our registry there. Sometimes the stuff is on crazy sale, but when it's not it's way overpriced. Stuff changes so frequently so I wouldn't stress too much! People will either buy something different or wait for the sale.

Actually for one of my friends, their dish went WAY on sale when we were buying their wedding gift. We were able to get all of their plates and bowls for just over $100. We ended up actually spending a little more than we normally would since we could get so much for so cheap.

  • Just remembered too, FI bought stuff off of his step-sister's registry a year ago and I was stalking it a coupe weeks later (bc I like to look at registries lol) and noticed a couple of the things he'd bought were on sale. He was able to contact Macy's and get a price adjustment on those items and ended up getting like $30-40 back.  That was a nice perk as a buyer too
  • Yeah. Another thing is they say how many gifts you should register for. They say two per person so with my 230 invites I registered for about 100 gifts. It still seems like way too many things.

Yeah whatever. That's nonsense. There are so many other factors. How much does each item cost? What is someone only buys you one gift? Or no gifts? Or three gifts? I just registered for what I like. People can buy it or not. If they don't, it reminds me of all the things I want haha.

It really depends on your group. For the wedding, we averaged 1 gift per family/couple. About half of those gifts were money. For the shower, it was usually 1 gift or a smattering of smaller things.

I can't remember if you've mentioned having a shower yet but you can reassess what's on your registry after the shower--- we found that we needed to do that. Also, most people will just give money if they don't see anything on your registry that they want to buy.

They kept making me feel like we didn't register for enough. We registered for 75ish and they kept saying we needed like 200 more. We didn't do that.

A lot of our items kept going on sale off&on... it was really annoying. I got gifts at my work shower full price and saw them on sale a week later.

We ended up taking some of the cash we were gifted and purchasing the "must have" items we didn't receive. They give you a 15% off thing for gifts left on your registry... so don't remove all the "luxury items" that you think you might buy yourself in the end. 15% isn't much but it helps!

  • Same frustrations with Macys! We registered there and the lady looked at us funny when we left the store with about 18 items. We kept looking at things that we wanted that were a good price on sale, but when you look at the non sale price it's CRAZY!

  • They have a "one day sale" that's actually a couple days multiple times a year. Plus they have a shit ton of coupons.

If someone buys something full price at Macy's, they got hosed.

  • Yeah I tend to think most people know Macy's sales are like that, and just won't pay full price for things or look down on you for how high the full price is. Whenever friends have Macy's registries I stalk them to get the best thing at the lowest price.

Anyone who pays full price for anything at Kohl's is paying the Idiot Tax.

HA NWR, but I feel the same way about Ann Taylor Loft. They have 40% off literally every couple of weeks. When I see people in the store buying stuff full price, I'm like are you serious!? It's going to be on sale any day now!

  • My towels went on/off sale about 4 times :) Also, you can always return the items purchased for store credit and pick out a new set if it's still to expensive after the wedding.

Or the Procrastinator Tax... I waited too damn long to get something for my college graduation and wound up paying full price for a pair of pants.

I don't shop at Kohl's any more because within a year of being worn less than once a month, the hems came out. Easy fix, sure, but I'm not in it to buy expensive-ish pants that don't last more than twelve wearings.

In the past when I've had friends with Macy's registries (which has been often, people love to register at Macy's) I've had success finding items on the Macy's registry for less on Amazon. Plus, I have Prime, so free shipping. I have been able to call Macy's and they have marked it as purchased. For example, right now our place setting is $82 on Amazon (although it's been down as low as $65 in the past month) and $99 at Macy's.

Nooooooo the reason so many people register at Macy's is cuz their rewards are so good! I got a percentage back of everything people bought me as a gift card after the wedding that I could use with my completion discount.

Cause...we're fucking registering there if that's the case.

Yes. You get 5% of what people buy off your registry, and 10% off anything you buy for yourself on your Macy's card during the time your registry is up (like if you buy your FI's suit there, WP gifts, outfit for the RD or HM, whatever). I got like $200 back on a gift card and bought my vacuum cleaner.

REALLY?! See, they didn't tell us this. They only gave me the "Dream Fund" spiel but made it clear that in order to use it, I had to basically register for more gift cards. And I said nope.

I registered online, so I never got the spiel. The Dream Fund popped up and I deleted it. We did go to the store to choose silverware and towels, but since we were adding to an existing registry they left us alone.

This is the same with Express I've found. Especially in Q1 and Q4 they are regularly doing 50% off, or at the VERY least, BOGO 50% off. I stock up like a mad woman.
