Although writing "no boxed gifts" is rude, perhaps it is on both invitations because there are slightly different guests lists for each reception? (Since you think the family is quite "divided"). Not so much that they expect all guests to give two gifts.

Either way, I'd give one gift/ card. Sending it before/after the wedding is never wrong.
