Right or wrong - this is why I quit doing road races. I used to run in road races before it was cool to wear tutus, take selfies and throw corn starch. I remember the Race For the Cure that was the final straw for me. It's really not that easy to run around walker. And that race did have time corrals - but people wanted to start with their friends -PHOTOS!!! - regardless of how fast they could run. :unamused:

Now I'm just a snooty driver, in that I hate that there is some theme run EVERY freaking Saturday now - blocking traffic with road closures. I remember when there was maybe one 5K per month. These fake charity fun runs really run me the wrong way - and not bc I can't work on my PR timing.
What makes them "fake"? Every single fun run I have done/considered doing has donated to a legit charity.
Yes, people who want to get together to raise money for a worthy cause are so much more terribad than people who want to run just so they can wag their e-peens over their times.  I mean it's not like any of you are going to be competing in the Olympics for the US.

You people just walking and pushing strollers in these races, that is.

  • Unless you're running from a bear or someone with a knife, no run is serious.

WTF are you peole running from bears and ppl with knives?!

Well sometimes you have to run to get the gun.

There are many that are legit, and if you run in them to benefit charity I recommend researching it to make sure that the money if going to a charity. The color run and sone like it that say the money benefits a charity only donate a very small portion to a charity and the money typically goes out of state, it doesn't benefit the local economy and it is done at a cost tot he taxpayers.

Race for the Cure is totally legit. Ones on Groupon where you get neon glow sticks - better check if the money is really doing any good or just a photo op for AWs - unless of course that's what the racer is going for...
I guess I just don't get why this matters? I just did a (GASPOMGAW) blacklight run because it was fun. That was my reason for doing it. That and, it was a way to get my ass up and doing some physical activity. So what? Why does that make me an AW? Some of the proceeds were also donated to a local charity, which is good no matter what amount, IMO.

Now, if my main purpose for doing the run was to support x charity, I would obviously be doing more research.

So that's not what I said. I was not being sarcastic. There are a great deal of fun runs out there that pretend to benefit charities, but in fact that percent that goes to a charity in minuscule. The companies pretend to be doing good, when in reality they are turning a profit while costing the community money in resources, police, clean up etc.

A worthy cause, go for it. I fully support it. I donate to people doing them, I just don't run in them.

I should not have references RFTC as my last 5K. It is totally legit. Color Run - don't fool yourself, it's not doing any really good. It is not a charity race. It is a money maker for a CA (IIRC) company.

  • Guys, it's almost like there are 2 categories of races, and people can choose the type they're into!

And if it is and people like to participate in it just because it's fun for them, then that's fine for them, right?

That's the same as you running in races only where you can work on your PR Timing or whatever the hell that is, right?  Because that is what's fun for you.

I think the implication that all fun runs weren't real was just kind of like WTF to some of us.

We are all entitled to our hobbies or what we do for fun. What one person thinks is AWing is not what another does. What I think about these runs is just my opinion.

I think when you (the company hosting the race) tell people it's for charity and give 3% or less to the charity, and cost taxpayers thousands at the same time that it is a deceitful way to advertise how you make a living.  That's my opinion.

I have a burr up my ass about the color run in particular. The cornstart thrown clogged up the air conditioning systems for business in the area and they had to fix it themselves or make insurance claims. Which is BS.

  • Isn't there like an obesity epidemic in the US? Aren't we supposed to be encouraging people, all people, to get out and move? Even if they don't do it "right"? Even it doesn't benefit a charity?

I actually didn't even know the Color Run had any kind of charity affiliation at all. I thought it was just for the funsies so had I ever run one, any charitable aspect would've been gravy.

I'm dying!! (But honestly never heard of the throwing cornstarch thing....)

I just chalk this up to everyone having their something. I played a lot of sports over my young years and always was mediocre at best, but usually terrible at whatever I tried. Running I got into when I was 22 and broke but too hyper to rattle around my cheap studio apartment alone. I could afford to run, but could not afford to join a gym or the social sport club teams.

Sure enough, the high of getting a PR is addicting. You're only competing against yourself (for us usual mortals, not the actual Olympic qualifiers that do run the same races as me in Chicago).  I'm really glad running has gotten so popular that their are timed/competitive races and fun runs for all levels. I'm glad there are charity runs for those so inclined. I'm glad I live in an area where there are tons of runs of all distances to choose from.  But, I like me a PR, so I will stay far away from "fun runs" and I will not wear a tutu and I'll let the professionals take my picture looking like a dying drowned rat rather than inconvenience fellow runners by taking my own selfies mid-race.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Here here! You and mean we'll go get drunk at the bar. At like noon. Like normal people.
  • Guys! I remembered a time I participated in a 5K!

The annual Undie Run! I was not wearing a tutu. I wasn't wearing much actually.
  • I wore a tutu and had professionals take my picture as I jogged my chubby butt along during a Color Run.  My friend who is a "real" runner (this chick does marathons) made sure she was at the front of the race, wearing a matching tutu I might add, and waited for me at the end with a beer in hand.  And helped get the green spot off my back that I couldn't reach afterwards.  Then we went out at drank gin and had oysters that night. And that's why we're friends.

Look at that!  You weren't an asshole and didn't queue up with her and the rest of the real runners!  No one tripped over you!!!!

    This is truly teamwork.

You lost me at gin though. . . I just can't.

In all fairness it was a cucumber gin martini and almost 100 degrees in NYC and it just worked so well with the oysters.  Usually I"m a Whisky gal

So, in summary, doing something for fun = AW. Got it. I love fun, so I must be the biggest AW out there. Never mind the fact that my having fun requires exactly zero attention.

I mean, yes, this is shitty. But that doesn't make the people running/walking it a bunch of idiots who don't care about "real" runs. It is a fun thing to do.
