Tattoos

I love them, they make me happy and I have three of them. One will be visible in my dress and I'm so glad it will because I think it is beautiful and it's a part of me. FI comes from a very conservative family and I'm not sure any of them have any tattoos, this made me nervous for them to see mine since I knew they told all of their kids if they got one they were never welcome to live in their house again. Long story short, they all love me, I love them, and they are truly a second family for me.

My mom would like to add to a tattoo that we originally got together and would like me to go with her so the artist can use the additions I have done as a starting point for hers, this is giving me the itch to get another one so bad! FI doesn't even really notice mine anymore and he doesn't mind them but I'm a little nervous to start adding on before the wedding. Generally I'm a "this is my body I do what I want" type of gal but for some reason I'm struggling with pulling the trigger.

All of you tattooed knotties, would you go for it?

When is your wedding? Would you be healed in time?

I don't know anything about tattoos, but this would be my primary concern. That time I got a new piercing and it wasn't healed in time for a special event I went to... :(

Plenty of time, it's in January.. I want to add more that would be very visible in my dress and while I know it's my body and I would love it, I'm not sure FI would be super excited about it (although when the wedding is over all bets are off). His reaction every time I go for another or adding to one is simply "another one?" so while he would never tell me what I could and couldn't do with my body, I can tell he doesn't really get it.

  • If you want it, do it.

I have a big hot air balloon on my arm that was clearly visible with my dress. My mom made a bunch of snarky comments about it cuz I guess she thinks the ink on my body somehow reflects poorly on her as a mother and people are going to judge her? Whatever.

I forgot it was even there until people kept complimenting me on it on my wedding day. Even my 89 year old traditional grandma loves it. So ha.

I say go for it. This is something that YOU want and I see no reason, wedding or not, FI or not, as to why you shouldn't do it. I added on to one on my arm about 6 months before my wedding and I love that it's part of my wedding photos. It's part of who I am and barring extenuating circumstances, I wouldn't have let anything stop me from getting another one
  • What's going to happen, people are going to see you walking down the aisle in your bridal tattooed glory and jump in your way to stop the wedding? Would someone speak up during the "forever hold your peace" part of the ceremony?

These days, brides show their tattoos. It's a show of personality.

And worst case, there's good makeup out there to cover it.

When my dad, also of the "kick you out of the house / disown you if you get a tattoo" type, learned I had a tattoo, his resolve of not speaking to me lasted two weeks. He still walked me down the aisle.

I remember seeing pictures of that one on the other tattoo convo and I LOVE it! Lucky for me my mom has a matching tattoo of the one that shows right now so I'm pretty sure she's not worried about how it reflects on her as a mother! I might just have to do it.. his family is the conservative side and they all love me so pretty sure there will be no judging.. I have never lied about who I am!

Yes, it may or may not be Harry Potter inspired because HP is my other love.

HA.. I would NEVER cover up a part of me so if there was someone in my life that had THAT big of a problem with it, they could shove it! I'm proud of who I am and love my tattoos!

  • If you want another tattoo get it.
  • I'm intrigued at the HP theme! Sounds awesome just from that.

  • I have no idea why the wedding factored into it but I think I just needed to put in on a computer screen to really show myself how stupid it sounds! Calling now to make the appointment, hopefully my guy can get me in while I'm visiting home!!! Yay tattoos!

  • UPDATE: Appointment scheduled.. he had ONE time slot in the next month and it happens to be the day I'm heading down there!!!

  • My sister asked if I was going to cover my tattoos for the wedding, and I had barely started to shake my head when Mom, of all people, of all the eye-rolling "WHY DO YOU WANT TO DO THAT TO YOUR BODY" people, said, "No, it's a part of her. Why would she cover it?" It gave me warm fuzzies.

Also, I have spent a lot of money trying to find good makeup to cover them for job interviews. I do not think such a thing actually exists outside of David Tutera's sphere of influence.

Why the fuck does it matter what anyone else will think?

P.S. Your FI needs to STFU about what you choose to do with your body.
  • Covering them is a joke, you got them for a reason, wear them with pride.. My coaches in college decided I needed to cover mine for practice, we went through EVERYTHING to try and do that and they gave up on the idea after make up getting all over their floor.

For all of you with tattoos.. does anyone have the collar bone done? How painful was it? I'm going to take my shoulder blade tattoo over my shoulder and down onto my collar bone!

Thanks to all this tattoo talk going on around here, I'm scheduling a consultation to get another tattoo. Cuz 10 just isn't enough. Or 9? I might have 9.

I got another one two weeks ago (so now I have 4) and FI wants to get one this coming weekend so I will probably HAVE to get another one... mine are all tiny and I love them.

I do, but pain is INCREDIBLY subjective, so no one can answer this for you.

Mine was not painful at all. The most painful tattoo that I ever got was on my big-old fat-covered butt.

Hand to god the ass has got to be the second worst place to get a tattoo pain wise. Foot as top of the pain chart. I think it's because there is so much muscle back there. I don't really know, but it fucking hurts.

Good to know! I managed the foot, ribs, all the way down my side, and my shoulder blade.. foot sucked, the rest were fine so I'm going to take that as this will be fine too!

    EDIT because foot, not food

  • Little bit of fun tattoo talk.. my artist asked me if he should make my mom laugh the last time we were in there, I said yes and he pulled down his pants to moon her. He has TONS of signatures all over it, when people have been coming to him long enough he gives them a crash course and lets them sign a cheek!

He... he lets unlicensed/not properly trained people tattoo him? That sounds like a really dumb idea. But, I mean, he also exposes himself (aren't their laws against that?) to customers. So, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that someone so unprofessional is also not too bright.

I trained for a year before I put a needle to skin that was not mine.

I mean, if you are cool with hella unprofessional people putting needles into your skin, uh... okay?

I myself care more about safety and a professional, reputable artist, but you do you.
