What's on your summer to-do list?

I'm quite bored this morning so I've been thinking about the stuff I want to do/learn/accomplish this summer.

This will be the first summer in several years that I haven't been in grad school and/or busy planning a wedding, or taking undergrad summer classes, or driving long distance to visit H (the first year we met we lived about 4 hours apart). So now I get to do stuff.

There's things I want to learn how to cook; (already learned how to make bread from scratch!), I want to learn to make mozzarella from scratch, and pizza crust, and some other random things that sound delicious

I need to rehab my old desk (it was my mom's when she was a kid and now I've had it my whole life and it's moved to all of my apartments and houses with me, so it needs some love at this point) and rehab a coffee table that was donated to me by my grandma when I was in college (it's circa 1960 and has also been through a lot). I already re-built/re-finished/re-covered an old chair which was pretty fun and it didn't turn out to be a disaster lol.

And then there's some places we want to go to. As always, we're also working on our garden and growing vegetables and herbs. (These will be so very useful when I figure out how to make that mozzarella and pizza crust!)

What are you doing?

Re: What's on your summer to-do list?

  • This summer is when the wedding planning kicks into high-gear... it's dress fittings, the pre-parties, getting the invites together and out, putting together the ceremony, picking music, etc., etc.  All fun things!

We also want to take some time off and go away for a quick summer weekend- we're deciding between Block Island or camping in Acadia...

I think I might try rock climbing for the first time ever, too.  FI is a HUGE rock/ice climber and he's been asking me to try it forever, but I've been nervous...  I will ski, hike, snowmobile, ATV, you name it- I just don't like to be high off the ground.  Where's @Climbingwife  when you need her?  Tips, please!  :)

Most of my summer will be wedding planning, but aside from that I am hoping to get a few "home-y" things accomplished.

I desperately want to spruce up our apartment. Right now FI lives there all the time, and I am only there on the weekends, so it's decorated insofar as FI putting some of his old dorm room/bedroom stuff on the walls. Needless to say, it's not really my style. I would love to get a few more mature pieces and start collecting some decorations that can move with us when we get a bigger place.

I am also determined to learn some new recipes. FI and I are vegetarians, and the only meals I ever learned to make included meat, because I was raised eating it. Now, I tend to struggle when it comes to making fun/interesting/healthy meals. I default to the same few things, and I really want to expand my repertoire. FI loves to cook as well, but getting him to make/eat vegetables is my life goal. Seriously, a vegetarian who hates vegetables. He lives off carbs!

We are also hoping to get away for an extended weekend. Anyone have advice on a great 4-5 day trip in/around NY, CT, PA, MA area?

Not a frequent climber, but I did it indoors in HS and I LOVED IT. It's definitely challenging, but I love workouts that are more than just running/lifting/etc. because I am bored easily. Rock climbing, well, ROCKS!
  • Summer is work, work, work.   DH works 7 days a week 10+ hours a day.   I work at the club on Fridays, Saturdays and every other Sunday.  In additional to my M-F job.

I did plant a tomato, basil and lemon-thyme plants.   I do have a goal to keep them alive.  I have a history of not being much of a gardener. So we will see how I do.

We have 2 trips planned for the fall though.   We are going back east for my mom's birthday. DH was asked back to Anguilla for a cooking event.    We might also take a long weekend with our friend's RV.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Holy crap. Sounds like you're really gonna need that vacation time when it finally rolls around!

Contrary to popular believe, Aspen area is pretty busy in the summer.  Most people think it's only ski season.

The club is pack from now until late-Sept.  I'm just part of their seasonal staff.  Just helping out.  Plus DH is working everyday, if I work at the club i get to see him once in a while. :)

My Sat and Sun job is the beverage cart on the golf cart.  I spend 6-8 hours driving the opposite way around the golf course selling gatorades and beer.  I get to see bears, coyotes, elk,  horses, cows and other wildlife.   It's really easy and not stressful at all.  The pay is great.

Fridays I'm just the hostess for the dining room.  I know most of the members, so it's not hard either.

  • Unfortunately for us, summer is busy season. I have a lot of summer events with work that I have to be at. DH is an Assistant Super at a golf course so he literally works constantly until October.

My summer goal is to rest as much as possible and maybe get some sun.

  • I want to finish as much wedding planning as possible, and get as much writing and editing done as possible.

I had that job one summer! It was really fun chatting with the golfers. They were always super excited to see me come around because I also had liquor and could make drinks for them lol. Unfortunately my sense of direction is pathetic and I always got lost on the golf course, and always felt like a total idiot for getting lost. So that is why I only had the job one summer.

I don't know how golfers don't get lost on golf courses! The terrain all looks the same to me. Now mini-golf paths, that I've got down.

    LOL -

I do have a good sense of direction. Plus our path is pretty easy to follow.  It's an easy job.  No phones, no emails.    People happy to see you.  Outside, pretty scenery.

We have liquor also, but our members are more gatorade and vitamin water peoples on the course.  Don't worry, they make up for it in dining rooms.

  • My plans for this summer include getting a ton of wedding stuff done.  Already knocked one thing off the list and ordered invites today!

I ended up with two summer jobs which is nice, although I'm not sure what the schedule will be like so I'm really hoping I still end up with free time.  I'm teaching summer school for a few weeks, and also working the front desk at a gym (I'm hoping it means I'll also work out more!).

And I finally think I have found a solution to the white streaks on my cabinets and trim, so I will be cleaning all of that up slowly throughout the summer.

    Well they have signs.     :p

And maps.   The score cards often have maps on them.

  • H is starting a certification class and will be gone Monday and Wednesday evenings.  So I want to make them productive at home.  There is still lots to do, I haven't hung up all of our pictures yet, so that is something I want to do.  The basement is still a mess with some unpacked boxes.  I also purchased a few project pieces of furniture and H has been teasing me since I haven't started them yet.  I'm just going to start working on them while he is gone.

We are also planning a big BBQ for the end of the summer, so that is my goal to get the house in good shape!

I also hope to get pregnant over the summer!

  • Y'all are so ambitious!

Nothing's on my agenda except marathon training (it'll be my 5th, DH's 3rd) and some travel, concerts.. just fun stuff.  I think this is our summer to more or less relax, since we want to move next year and hopefully start TTC.

  • The only thing I have on summer list is a quick trip to Nantucket.
  • Lot of wedding stuff. I feel like out of nowhere, we have lots of wedding-related things (registering, FI's suit fitting, meeting the florist, etc.) coming up this and next month. Then in Aug I have my bachelorette and shower. Other than that? Trying to stay in shape and get a tan.

  • Since I'm in 2 glad classes this summer, any time free will be spent either doing assignments or doing nothing.  We might try to get away for a long weekend - Vegas or Chicago I think, but that's it.

Usually in the summers, I try to get something major cleaned out - closets, mudroom, pantry, basement, garage, etc.

This is another thing I'm working on. I already did the linen closet (yay!) but now I need to work on my closet, the pantry and the office. Boo.

Just marathon training?     You are such a slacker.
LOL! Sorry. We work out 4-5 days a week anyway so marathon training is just sticking to a plan and carving out extra time on weekends for the long runs. The first year I ran a marathon I was working full time and studying for a master's. The running was my de-stress time. Knocking on wood, I don't have other commitments (children, ailing parents, a big house to worry about) so if it weren't for working out I'd be on the couch watching a lot of TV or reading.

  • My summer plans?  Well I plan on sunbathing whenever possible (with plenty of SPF of course). Take our pup to the trail/stream a lot.  Go to the beach.  Play golf.  Drinking lots of beer while grilling and eating out on our deck.  I may do some painting in our house, but only on days where it is raining.
My house only gets cleaned/laundry only gets done on rainy days, now that it's nice enough to be outside :)

Plus, someone gave us a hammock as a wedding gift! Score!

Ugh I miss having a hammock!  Hammock naps are the best.
