20 Years of Amazon.com - What was your first?

So by now everyone knows that Prime Day was a huge failure.  (But reading the #PrimeDay tweets had me laughing so hard... and I don't even do twitter)

Then I read this article and it got me thinking about my digital trail (and how many people share my prime account, including new DH!).

What was your first amazon purchase??

This was mine, on 1/15/2001:

Re: 20 Years of Amazon.com - What was your first?

  • Apparently my first Amazon purchase was Aladdin on DVD in 2011, which is really weird because Aladdin ranks way down on my list of favorite Disney movies.

I've never purchased anything from amazon.

eta- the magic wand is pretty magical though.

  • I was wondering what the heck "Prime Day" was all about and why they were making such a fuss... But I looked at what they had available and I was sorta like "um, I don't want that, or that, or that..." I guess that's true for me on Black Friday too.

Anyway, my first Amazon purchase, on Dec 12, 2006 was JENGA and UNO! That's pretty awesome. I must have bought them as Christmas gifts. For who? I can't remember! But I sorta wish I hadn't given them away because I kinda want to play both of those games right now.

I think I remember trying to, back in the day. But amazon.ca was a POS and I couldn't use .com. It might be better now though lol

  • @redheadbride15 I LOVE jenga. I am terrible at it.

my mom still has my uno tile game. I should get that.

  • October 1999: Labyrinth on VHS.

Pretty sure I still have it somewhere

  • I love Jenga too, though it sorta gives me anxiety. I hate to think what my blood pressure is when I play...

A Skillet CD. In 2008. I've placed 30 orders in the last six months.

eta: I don't think all the deals today have been awful. You've just gotta put so much effort into it it's pretty much not worth it.
  • Oct 23, 2003.

A book on  Alfred Hitchcock.   I think it was for my roommate at the time.  He didn't have a credit card.

I bought a book on homeowner ship and a cook book in 2004.

    Nothing in 2005.

Then from 2006-2011 it was only gifts for people back in the states.

Once I moved back then I started using Amazon more.  I still do not buy much from them.  Mostly gifts for people.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • My first purchase was in 2010, and it was a book for my husband for Christmas.

  • 2009 - Looks like a book on College Cherleading and one on Gymnastics.  I guess I couldn't find them at Chapters.  Amazon sucked up here when it started.  I still don't think it's as good as the US.  We don't have as much stuff to order I think.

So I don't actually know, but how was Prime Day a flop??  They were expecting more orders, or the deals weren't that good?

  • I had never even looked at my order history that far back.  Good nostalgia.

My first Amazon orders were in 2002... I purchased a few books by Graham Hancock & Robert Bauval.  Some interesting history of the world / conspiracy theory type books.

Nothing in 2003.  Then 2004 I bought Cliffnotes for The Odyssey. I had read it in high school and didn't feel like re-reading it for college. After that it was only used for a few books a year.  In 2011, I used it for Christmas shopping, but still only 20 orders that year.

    Then 2012 I got Prime membership... I have a total of 90 orders in 2012.  127 orders in 2013.  132 orders in 2014.

We finally cut back this a bit year and I only have 47 orders so far this year. Although, I've also started just saving things in my cart until I have 2-3 things, so I don't have boxes arriving every single day. So, I'm not sure we really are ordering less stuff or just fewer orders.

My Amazon orders includes a range of items like tools, lots of varieties of BBQ sauce, dog toys/treats, peanut butter, aspirin, wine (yes, wine), and makeup (I like Smashbox powder foundation and it's significantly cheaper on Amazon than it is at Sephora). Unless we need it immediately, we usually order most stuff from Amazon.

So far only DH and I use my Prime Account.  I've been debating letting my mom have access, because she would use it for books & tv streaming, probably more than I do.  She would probably use the free shipping at times also.  But, I'm not sure I want my mom rummaging through my order history or knowing how much I actually spend on Amazon. And then all of her books and movies would be in my libraries, which may suck.

  • First purchase was in 2007 for an iPod photo! 2nd order was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows book and a cat toy.

Bought a few things each subsequent year until 2012 when we had our son and then my Amazon Prime shopping definitely ramped up!

Re Prime Day.. It does say more deals than Black Friday (not necessarily better deals!) I had higher hopes, but it is like they just wanted to get rid of their random crap inventory (generally).
  • Hey I bought a new purse today in the Prime Sale.  I also saw at least 5 things from our registry on sale.  But yeah, the sales weren't spectacular just decent.

    First purchase:
January 21st 2005, I bought two Diana Krall cd's ("Look of Love" and "Live in Paris" which is one of my favorites still) and a Bobby Darin collection CD.

Also of note that year, October 19, 2005, I bought 3 dance aerobic workout DVDs.  I think I did one of them, the other two are still in a box somewhere in my basement, still wrapped in the cellophane.

  • Also, I don't really use my account anymore except for Kindle books.  We use FI's since it has the prime account.  His first purchase was October 10 2002 and was a book called "Beginning PHP4" which I have no idea what that is, but assume it was something to do with his college.

  • I bought a children's book on the vices and virtues in 2004. Wut? I don't even like kids and why in the world would I buy THAT book? My niece is only 4... I'm very confused
  • My first purchase was in October 2004.  It was the Complete 2nd Season of the Rocky and Bullwinkle show.  It was my oldest brother's birthday gift.
  • May 1999

Action Photography : Approaches and Techniques for Recording the Decisive Moment (Pro-Photo Series)    It was for me while I was on my photography kick.

  • Apparently my first purchase was a camera (Christmas present for my mom). I think I had a different account before this, though, because it says that was in 2011 and I started college in 2009...I guarantee my first purchase on there was textbooks!

I was having internet troubles yesterday, but from my phone the sales looked okay. I bought some home organization stuff and an external hard drive, and it was all 20-50% off.
  • ew mine was in 2006 and it was just a bunch of college text books :(
    image
  • Also, it says so far in 2015 I've placed 33 orders. But a lot of that was random wedding supplies. I also do a lot of xmas shopping on Amazon since crowded stores really freak me out.
    image
  • That was fun.  My first purchase was on March 25, 2008, some Jabra Noise-Cancelling Headphones that were recommended to me by my cousin.  This was before I met FH, so I wonder to where I was flying that I felt I needed noise cancelling headphones.  Because they had to have been for an airplane trip somewhere.
