Plus Size Ladies....where do you shop?

I'm 30 years old and usually a size 18/20/22 depending on where I am shopping. I am looking for some new websites to shop on to "shop outside the box of normal"  I am a very girly girl, but don't get the chance to dress up very much, so i love to do it when i get the chance! I have 2 weddings to attend, one in August is a reception for a Destanation wedding(Friday night) and then one in September that is like a country/rustic theme, the wedding is at a church but the reception is at a bar.

My issue is i dont know how to be "medium dressy" everything I personally like is really dressy, strapless, sequin, lace, etc and the only other stuff i find is "business dressy" which is like what i would see someone who works at a bank wearing, so i thought if i shop some new sites I may have better luck! Sorry for being so wordy!!!

  • Torrid is a great place.  My sister loves it.

  • I LOVE forever 21 plus. Their plus size line is much more toned down, but still fun. Lots of cute stuff, especially bathing suits.

Torrid is great too. I just got a couple of dresses there.

  • They are a little pricy, but I love eshakti.com, they make your clothes to order.  It can be done by either dress size or they will also do your exact measurements.  They are in India, but they are not a sweatshop and are a legit company.

I have made purchases from Lane Bryant and been happy.  Also, consider Rent the Runway for the weddings, they also have a great selection of plus sized dresses.  Just read the reviews of other customers so you know whether to order your free back up size in one up or down from your usual.
  • Fiance's cousin just posted on FB about Gwynie Bee (sp?).

I find I am wearing 14-16 size clothing right now and if I got to a plus size store, some of their X or size 14 items fit me.  I like to shop at Modcloth, Reitmans, Sears, Maurices, Eshakti, Forever 21 Plus, Additionelle, and Penningtons.
ETA if you give general styles your prefer or your overall taste, I'm sure myself and/or some other users can help look for dresses and outfits

  • Kiyonna is my new favorite. I've shopped from there (online) for two years and I love everything I've bought. It seemed like Lane Bryant's clothes aren't as good of quality as they used to be so I have made Kiyonna my go-to store now. I also like Maurice's. I haven't had good luck with Torrid's. Their clothes run so small, I never know what size to order. IGIG also has nice dresses but they're pretty expensive. Simply Be has cute clothes but they tend to run too big. Swakdesigns.com is fun too!

  • I love Old Navy for dresses/skirts/tops, and Land's end has some really cute plus size clothes and most of the clothes on the website have pictures with someone modeling the "plus" option. They're not exactly out of the box, but they're my go-to's for work clothes and wedding clothes. I just spent way too much at old navy since all of their maxi-skirts seem to be on sale at the moment.

i like this one for the simplicity and the fact that it looks a little longer? I have issues with length because im tall

i love this one as well, its a good price, i actually tried it on before and loved it but worried about length so i didn't get it

i really love this style, but the design on it seems a little old lady ish, to me at least...

  • Torrid. Is. Everything.
  • Torrid. Is. Everything.

thats exactly what my best friend says but i dont get the hype, they have a couple cute things i like at the most. also there is no store locally and it annoys me to pay for it to be shipped to me, and then pay again to ship it back if it doesn't fit...
  • I think I have two things from Torrid, and they are so cheaply made, I think I've worn them two or three times.

I mostly shop at Macys and Nordstrom.  Their store selections aren't always great, but they have great online options. And you can return to the store if it doesn't fit.  Nordstrom has an amazing selection of plus size formalish dresses.  And if you can catch them on sale, they aren't much more expensive than JCPenney or Lane Bryant.

Nordstrom's anniversary sale is going on now.
  • I tend to buy most stuff from Nordstrom or Macy's. For cheaper basics, Old Navy.

If you're open to online shopping, I love Simply Be. Kiyonna and Igigi are also favorites but expensive - but you can frequently find items from those brands on Overstock.com. Also check out Eloquii.

I've also bought a few things off of ThredUp lately. It's consignment so there aren't tons of the same items but it's cheap and there are random fun things. I've been selling stuff through them lately as well.

  • I wear a 14/16/18 depending on the style and fit and I do a lot of online shopping at Ann Taylor Loft. I've also recently discovered Simply Be and have gotten multiple great items including my bridal shower dress. I always have very good luck at Dressbarn as well, they tend to have some trendier styles of dresses that are better fitting than other stores for my shape.
  • I'm the same size as you and for dressier things I go to Dress Barn.

Believe it or not, Walmart actually has a good size/selection plus size department.  Most of my casual clothes have come from there.

  • IMO Torrid, Maurices, and Dress Barn are overpriced for the quality of clothing but they do have some cute things (Maurices is probably my favorite of those three) so I shop their sale racks pretty often. Old Navy is priced exactly right for the quality, so I shop there for most of my casual clothes.

Dress Barn probably has the level of formality you're looking for with the "medium dressy" (and a ton of their stuff is bank-employee dressy). They actually have a "wedding guest" search filter, so here you go: plus size wedding guest dresses.

  • Yes, twoleighs, I was going to suggest Walmart too!  They have come a LONG way, and the quality is the same as the expensive stores IMO.  It's hard to buy clothes in general, I feel like the material is getting thinner and thinner everywhere I go :(

Macy's can have great sales, and Marshalls is a hit or miss.

  • I am plus sized.  Land's End has great clothes for us.  There is a huge sale on dresses right now.  I bought two and pop them on when I go out for dinner.

If something doesn't fit, you just walk in to the nearest Sears to return it.

  • I never knew you could return land's end at sears...great to know!!

I'm currently obsessing over nordstroms because they have a great sale and offer free shipping and free return shipping if i dont like it which is awesome that is what i hate most about torrid. I almost never order online unless i can get free shipping(coupon code, etc) and last time i ordered from torrid it cost me almost 20 bucks to ship back my returns, ugh!!!

I'm a pear shape, so Avenue was always my go-to when I wore plus sizes. They tend to make their clothes for pears - small waist, relaxed hip/thigh.
