So I realize this thread is on the old side but I just got through this ridiculousness and I have to add something. 

DH is a teacher. He has a master's plus 20 credits, plus he's on his 5th year teaching, so that puts him near the top of the pay scale. He started over in a new district which hit his pay, but it will be up again next year when he's re-tenured. We live in MN, which has a pretty decent jobs to cost of living ratio. 

When we decided to move down here, he applied to lots of different jobs, including some very prestigious private schools. Guess what? They pay $10-20k less than public schools. He was looking at close to $50k at his current (low income) school vs around $30k at a private one, simialr to what he made as a brand new teacher. I'm not convinced that they're all they're cracked up to be, at least not in this area. They certainly aren't attracting the best teachers, when they can work at a public school for better wages, better benefits, and much more job security. To work at a private school you have to either have some sort of insane elitist attitude about it or you have to be unable to get a job elsewhere. 

I personally went to private school preschool through 8th grade and IMO It was a joke. That school closed its doors about 10 years ago, too. That's not the case with all of them but in more cases than not, there is nothing about private schools that makes them higher quality than public, unless you live in an area with a notoriously bad public system. 

You have to be absolutely insane to think that universally privatized education could possibly be a good idea. 

Someone also told him at one point how much it costs just to make lunches at his previous relatively small school. I can't think of what it was but it was astronomical. Thousands per day. It definitely costs a hell of a lot more than 10k to run a school. FFS.
