Seriously?

Re: Seriously?

  • I have met maybe 5 girls with my name, and they all have the same issue or they go by their middle name.. I love my name, I was going to be an Ashley, then my mom's best friend who had a baby weeks before I was born names her daughter so, my dad liked Ryan, and she said no one would steal that.. once people are over the fact I am a woman, everyone backpedals and says "ohh that is really pretty/interesting name for a girl".. my little sister is Chais instead of Chase, people seem to not assume she is a boy and get it right.

diverting back to the OP's question. . . . I was at dinner last night and witnessed a "Seriously?" situation at the table behind me.  It was a group of 20-something females.  One was drinking diet cokes.  When the bill came she told the waiter that there had been too much ice in her diet cokes and she wanted them taken off the bill.  She had drank them at this point, all 2 or 3 of them.  The manager said no.  She announced loudly that she will never return to the restaurant and proceeded to not leave a tip.

    I can't.
Wouldn't the common sense thing be to ask for no ice/less ice when getting a refill?  Or when you order your first drink?

after being a waitress through collage, I am not shocked.. I had so many customers complain about food after they already at the whole plate, like nothing left on the plate, managers have to deal with them at this point..

OK, my first name is Ryan.. Yes I am a woman. I was put on boys soccer teams, first day moving in to the dorms in college was interesting, and my last job my health benefits had me down as a male and questioned my OBGYN appointment..... my mother would write my girly middle name on EVERY THING so my name would immediately be come a hill billy double name.. so I hate it when people call me that

Also when people call me and then say "Oh I am sorry I was expecting a guy..." Wait it makes a difference?? you're calling me.. I have had people call me to set up interviews and say that to me, like I shouldn't be offended.. I usually take it in stride and say something like "yea, I get that a lot"

If I am in person introducing myself I have to say "Yes Ryan, like R. Y. A. N., not RIAN that is how you misspell rain"

I've loved the name Ryan for a girl since I was in HS and knew a girl with the name. I've always wondered if there would be an issue like that, though it seems like so many names these days can be male or female so it is bound to happen I guess.

We had a girl named Kyle at summer camp once.  She was put into the boys rooms and the boys small group the first day.  She was bummed to have to leave the small group on day two.  She liked being one of the boys.  The rooms, not so much.

    ----why boxes never work?!!----
I used to date a guy named Kyle and my dad would not let it go that when he was a kid Kyle was a girls name. My ex was the first boy named Kyle he had ever met, apparently.

this was me, also the boys soccer team coaches after letting me pratice with them the first day would say "are you sure you don't want to stay on the team?" I was a tomboy for sure.. The dorm room, at first I was like this could be good, then I saw the roommate I had and changed my mind..

I'm terrible at correcting people when they say my name wrong. My name is fairly common, but I use a less common pronunciation for the same spelling. It's sort of weird but it's how my family has always done it. Twice in the last week people I've worked with for awhile have asked how I pronounce my name and apologized for doing it wrong. Sorry! I stopped correcting people in high school because it's just a lot of work and I feel rude when I do. And a ton of people would say it right once and then forget and I'd get weird variations because all they remember is it's "not normal".
I have 2 nieces who have unusual pronunciations of their names.  The bad part is I have friends who spell their names the exact same way, but have the standard pronunciations of those same names.

Every time I'm about to say any of their names I have to stop, pause and make sure I'm using the correct pronunciation.
This is part of the reason I don't correct people. A lot of people have friends/coworkers with the other pronunciation. I understand that it is a little bit hard to keep track of and I don't take it personally if someone gets it wrong. It's not because I they don't know they're talking to me, it's just because you get used to whatever version you use more frequently.

    wow.

    Some customers can be assholes.

Oh the flip side, we had an horrible experience at a place in NYC.   All the temps on the steaks were wrong, drinks were wrong.   Sides were wrong.  It was horrible.   DH saw my cream of spinach, tasted it and then asked the waiter for an order.   The waiter brought him a vodka and soda instead.   WTF?

Anyway, we took care of the problem right then and there.  We didn't eat everything and then wait for the check to show up.  They ended up taking a good $600 off our bill.   (there was 17 of us.  Not one order was correct)

Point of the story is take care of the issue when it occurs, not after you have eaten/drank everything then complain.
I hate service like that. I've been a server, I get it. And usually, I'm willing to let a lot slide. But when service is just THAT bad or when they disappear for 30 minutes and I know it's because they're smoking or gossiping in the kitchen I start to lose patience.

But to get every single order wrong? That takes talent. And from now on when I'm ordering spinach, I'm going to always think of vodka and soda.

The food was bland, so that is the kitchen's fault.   Considering giving DH vodka for cream spinach I'm guessing the wrong temps and sides being all wrong was a result of the waiter not punching in the order correct.   Some of the food was cold too, not sure if we should have blamed the kitchen or the waiter.   For all I know it was sitting in the window forever.

2 steaks were so rare (ordered med)  that they were sent back and then the waiter forgot to even bring them back.    My just-turned 21 year old niece ordered a prosecco and got a pinot noir.

It was so bizarre. DH was fairly certain the waiter was on something.  At one point I did see him put his jacket back on (they wear chef-like jackets).  Can only imagine what he was doing.

DH is normally an easy going diner and he was getting annoyed.  Not only that DH knows the owners.  Not very well, but well enough to tell them about the experience.
