I've had the same email since 1998.   It's my first and maiden name.  I never changed.  Nor did I see the need.     Sure work emails for the most part are people names.  I find personal ones often are not.  So who cares my personal email has my maiden name, but I have a different last name.
Yeah, this is my exact feeling on it. I mean, some people have emails like sparklepony69@gmail.com, so I just don't get why having your legal last name on it, unless you are a freelancer and use it for business, really matters?

  • I kept my old email address with my maiden name. It's basically only spam these days anyway. I did make a new gmail account with my new name and have both accounts on my phone.

Since someone else mentioned this, none of my credit cards asked for anything to change my name. I just said I got married and they took the info verbally. That was it.

  • My main e-mail account for personal stuff has my previous married name on it. I have no plans to stop using it, even though I no longer carry that name in any capacity. Not mention the e-mail address is MrsEXNAME@_.com. LOL

That being said, ALL of my CCs asked for documentation to change my name on the accounts.

Is there a time frame to start the process? Also, people that either kept maiden name and married name or hyphenated their names, what's the difference or benefits of each? If I hyphenate do I still have to change name on my existing bank account? Sorry for sounding dumb

As previous posters said, this depends largely on state. I live in Alaska. As far as I know, there's no time limit for changing your name. I didn't find one in my research, and I didn't change my name until 6 months after we got married. I did not have to put what I planned for my name to be anywhere on the marriage license.

I would expect that your bank account should have your legal name. I would want everything to match.

I have a 2 last names. I fucking hate it.  But not enough to go through the process to have it changed again.

If your name is legally hyphenated, then yes you have to change your name on things like your bank account.   If you are only doing it socially, then you do not.

What the first step depends on your location. I had to get my social security changed before I could do my DMV.  I couldn't do other things like bank until the SS and DMV were done.

Yup generally SS is the first step and then DMV. I'm in the process of changing BACK to my maiden after my divorce. 2nd time around, I'm an old pro now

  • I got married on a Friday and had all my name change documents done that following Monday (one of the perks of a City Hall wedding, we got our certificate immediately) it was super quick (I spent a total of ~2 hours waiting at the SSA and DMV and once I got called at both I was done in 5 minutes) and hassle-free. I've been slowly updating everything else as I go, like my bank information and my credit cards and subscription services.

Where I am (NY) you can both change your name and it has to be on the certificate. You can change it to either one name one party has or an amalgamation of both names, no new names allowed sadly (we brainstormed some new names we'd go with but our mash-up name sounded ridiculous so we scrapped that idea). And the SSA updates their records immediately so I made a DMV appointment as soon as I left the SSA and got my new license the same day.

The one major thing I have left to do is my passport, but we're taking a bit of a delayed honeymoon so I'm going to be doing that by January (and my husband has never had a passport, so we're getting them together).

it's a b*tch to change in NY. I don't know how it is in other states but for NY you need to actually GO to the DMV in person. Plus, everyone needed originals for everything. They wouldn't take copies of my divorce decree or SS card or whatever, had to have the originals.

I didn't go to SSA in person b/c I work, so I mailed everything (again only originals), which sucked b/c I had to be without the documents until they processed the card. Luckily it was pretty quick (like 2 weeks to get it).
