Re: Stranded on an Island

  • @minskat30 awwwww thanks.

Ah I forgot about the Phantom of the opera soundtrack.  I'd love to bring that along too, the problem is I would want to sing it all the damn time.

@audrewuh - Why Prisoner of Azkaban? But YES to The Holiday. YEEEEESSSSSS.

@GoldenPenguin - I LOVE that you love Blue October.

@labro - I had no idea you love Rent that much!

@untouchablets - Girl, you're MY dream come true. :) And your movie choices are phenomenal.

@KeptInStitches - Do you have a favorite symphony? Ever since I saw the intro to the movie The Fall I've been in love with No. 7.

ETA: @untouchablets #2 - I took a class in college entirely about Hans Christian Andersen. We read chapters from a biography, and also had to write essays on interpreting his stories. He was so absolutely incredible! Plus, I love the old movie about him with Danny Kaye.

That is fine with me...we could go around the island singing it together and annoy the crap out of my H and @labro.  ;)  Raj doesn't mind my singing but he full on barks when H tries to sing, which I find hilarious...H is a bit tone deaf and gets really offended by it when Raj barks at him...which I find all the more hilarious.
  • @audrewuh - I love that we picked the same HP book to bring!

  • @AlPacina  - you're my favorite. <3

    That is hysterical!

We can sing all the time then.  I've haven't had voice lessons in forever so it will be pitchy.  I don't think I can hit the high D anymore.

  • I know I don't need to respond any further but just feel the need to say that my parents don't read and they are some of the most intelligent people you'd ever meet. They have been to over 50 countries and can tell you many facts about each one. They know everything from real estate to stock market to impressionist artists to current events to plumbing and so on. My point is books are not the only way to being an educated or "civilized" human being. They are not the only way to learn things or to have an imagination. So it's pretty close minded to think or assume that anyone who doesn't read is "uncivilized" or some knuckle-dragger.

@labro I suppose in high school I liked the stories of Great Gatsby and Scarlett Letter but I don't have the interest in rereading it more than once.

Re: reading books - I get that not everyone has the same interest level in reading as others do. I do think @goldenpenguin and @labro were a little harsh in their responses to @Jenna8984, even though I think it's a little side eye worthy not to want to bring anything to read to the island.

  • @audrewuh - I just meant why is it your favorite HP book? It would just probably be in my bottom two (not judging your choice, though!) and I wanted to know what you like about it so much. :)

  • - 3 people (at least 1 from NEY) BF, my friend that lives in Florida, and I don't know any NEYers IRL but I'm going to go with @keptinstitches because surely we'll have time for her to show me how to knit better, and with our powers combined I'm sure we could craft a boat.

    - 3 books A Walk in the Woods, a gigantic encyclopedia, and Harry Potter. All of them. I figure they can be bound into one giant book, right?

    - 3 movies Star Wars (original trilogy), Christmas Vacation, and Fight Club.

    - An iPod with 3 albums Les Miserables full soundtrack, Modest Mouse's We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, and Queen's Absolute Greatest compilation album

    - A never-ending supply of one food and one liquid (Assume fresh water is already available) Pizza and beer.

    - 3 other random items Set of crochet hooks, first aid kit, and my glasses so I can freakin see

Huh, I wonder how I managed to play sports, hang out with friends, be a part of 84909 other things, and still read like a civilized human being...

It really just makes me sad.
ALSO, if you couldn't READ the sarcasm in this, I feel even sadder for you.

Let's just be sure we are all aware of who put words into who's mouth - I never called ANYONE "uncivilized" or a "knuckle dragger" just for the record, and I never accused anyone of being uneducated because they don't read. But *I* was called "close minded."

Today is NOT the day people. NOT. THE. DAY.

  • @wink0erin - I find your music choices incredible! But please tell me you mean a broadway cast and not the movie soundtrack version of Les Mis? Russell Crowe absolutely destroyed one of my favorites.

On that note, have you ever heard of Collabro? They're a male singing group that won Britain's Got Talent and they cover Stars and Bring Him Home on their album. They're absolutely gorgeous arrangements.

  • I wanted to bring some alcoholic beverage but don't drink beer or wine and I'd have nothing to mix my liquor with besides water :'(

  • @alpacina ugh don't even get me started on Russell Crowe in Les Miz...

  • @bethsmiles

No, but seriously. You totally made my day, and I'd be honored to hang out with you on your island and talk about HP all day. <3

@lavenderfields13 - You don't drink wine?!?  I mean beer I sort of get only because I can't drink it with Celiac (gluten-free beer generally tastes like crap) but...no wine?

Alas, you can always bring Kool-Aid mix as one of your "items" and be a college kid all over again.

Side note - one of the few times I got completely hammered was in college at Madison at a frat party on Halloween.  We were drinking wine, then beer, then Kool-Aid and vodka and then I just switched to straight vodka.  The hangover from that night was epic.

ETA - Forgot the best part of that story...the next day I took my sister's kids Trick'or'Treating and I was so hung over my sister actually asked me "Ummm, are you ok to walk?"...she still let me take her kids...ah safe parenting choices.  ;)

@minskat30 - Your stories are seriously the best.

@audrewuh - Great answer! Sirius is the fucking coolest.

    ETA: @lavenderfields13 - Choose a mixed drink. I'll allow it. ;)

  • @goldenpenguin We all know sometimes tone and sarcasm don't translate over text so I'm sorry, it felt like you were implying that I'm stupid and I felt the need to defend myself. I will say that I have starting reading in the last year, gave lavenderfields some recommendations. I guess I'm more interested in self-help type books which I donate to the library when I'm finished because it's not the type I'd ever want to bring to an island and reread lol.

  • @AlPacina - Got one of those boxes lying around? Cause I could use some right about now.

Also, I'm changing my Mt. Dew to wine. Because I need a god damn drink.

  • @GoldenPenguin -

Today doesn't sound like it's going well for you. I'm sorry. :( Today is the day I get to visit the pot shop! I love going. It's like a toy store, except you're expected to smell things and pick stuff based on what it's named.

  • @AlPacina Oh yeah, I'd go with the 1988 Symphonic!
    ******************************************************

  • @AlPacina I only picked movies I already watch over and over and over again lol they never get old!!
  • @audrewuh @jenna8984 I mean if we're going to go around talking about feelings. I definitely felt as if sports and hanging out with friends were somehow better than reading, and reading was something people without friends/sports to play did. I definitely caught a lot of flack/borderline bullying growing up being such a big time reader when most other kids had zero interest n books and that definitely brought it all back.

@minskat30 No, the smell repulses me. I wish I were a normal person that liked beer & wine, my life would be so much easier. Definitely didn't think to add a mixer to my "random" items! I usually mix with a soda, I don't drink Kool aid either lol.
