Wtf Wednesday

Re: Wtf Wednesday

  • HALP!

My house cleaner called and said she's slightly concerned that there might be mold behind our shower.  We always have to clean the black gunk that builds up, but she says that there's a lot that seems to be coming from behind the shower wall.  What now??
  • @CocoBellaF you may want to get an inspector in to make sure it isn't harmful, or to tell you what to do if it is harmful. Black mold is no joke.

  • @CocoBellaF Oy vey! You want to make sure there is an adequate vapor barrier behind your tile. Too often we see contractors slap tile over regular drywall instead of sheet rock or green back (a special mold resistant drywall approved for use in moisture rich enviornments) because its cheaper and they're lazy. The problem is the mold grows, starts growing on the studs, gets into the insulation and then its just everywhere. You might have to pull a section of wall down and have a contractor check it out. I know it sounds like a lot, but it really is important to find it and get it taken care of, especially before the baby comes.

  • OMG.  Wah.  Guess we might have to put off new floors AGAIN.  :(

This. Especially with a baby on the way! Get it checked out ASAP!!!

@CocoBellaF - Ugh, crap!  I'm sorry.  I'd get someone in to test (and get multiple quotes and don't let people scare you into taking the most expensive quote)...how old is your house?  This is a large part of the reason we did our bathroom remodel now before baby gets here.  I'm 99% sure there was mold in our walls (I didn't look) and asbestos and a million other terrible things I'm sure.  Just promise me you won't freak out if they confirm it is there.  I promise the exposure did zero damage to you and baby and the removal won't either.

My BIL and his friends (all of whom are in construction) did our demo.  I'm sure we didn't do it "right" and if I had to do it all over again I might hire someone professionally to do the demo.  If you do the demo (not you personally but non-professionals) I would tell you to stay away for a day or two while it is done (definitely over night stay away in a hotel or something while the dust settles), wear a really good mask in the house, shut down your return air/furnace while the demo is taking place, seal the room off well, have a deep clean clean post-demo if you have to demo (don't forget to change your filter) and most of all DON'T FREAK OUT like we did (well, H really was the one freaking out...I figured a one-time exposure with me wearing a mask around the house wasn't going to make/break anything).

ETA - Just saw your update...fingers crossed everything is covered under your warranty.
  • @minskat30 - Our house was built in 2007, so it's new.  I'll wait until we have someone look at it before freaking out.  ;)

Ahhh good, you are probably fine then with most of the old home issues/construction then.  :)  Do you have a vent fan in your bathroom (that vents out of the house and not just into the attic) right by the shower too?  We put one in our bathroom remodel job right over the shower this time....our old bathroom didn't have a vent AT ALL.  Hello mold build up.
  • @cocobellaf Glad you are still in the warranty period! Is your shower tiled? My H will never allow us a tiled shower because the grout is an absolute nightmare which always cracks, lets water behind, and gets moldy. The one piece plastic/fiberglass surrounds may not look as great but you're guaranteed it's water tight since there are no seams. Just throwing it out there in case you do need to replace the shower I'd go that route and not another tile.

  • @CocoBellaF  yikes black mold! Hopefully it's nothing serious but at least you're under warranty.

    @minskat30  our apartment bathroom has zero ventilation and we get mold too. Cleans off pretty decent if you catch it fast. {also our bathroom and kitchen was painted with non-bathroom/kitchen type paint, so that might be half issue}
  • @jenna8984 - Ours is actually the plastic kind that comes with a basic new home.  So if there is mold back there, it's probably because it wasn't installed correctly.
  • I just got into work from my doctor, and my supervisor told me not to worry about turning in a leave slip for the half day I was out of office because I've worked over so much lately. Yayyyyy. Glad I ran errands while I was out because my appointment didn't take as long as I thought it would.

My WTF, which I may also work into OLW...

I needed air in my tires so I went to the gas station that has free air to do so. Some woman in a van was parked next to the air just chillin. There was no room to pull behind her because the gas station has the air in a stupid location, so you either have to block the entry or block parked cars to wait, so I pulled behind parked cars and figured I'd just watch to see if anyone needed out. The woman finally noticed I was waiting and got out to fill her tires. Now, in the meantime, a man in a car pulled up randomly and kind of pulled into the middle of the gas station lot catty-corner to this woman's van. I got this feeling he was going to breach etiquette and pull in front of me once the woman left so I was paying close attention and prepared to pull ahead since I had been waiting 10 min at that point. Woman left. Sure enough, the dickhead in the car not only just pulls in ahead of me, he does so aggressively/quickly, nearly hitting the woman's van as she was pulling out, and he pulled at a weird angle so he couldn't even reach all his tires with the air thingy. Then he took his damn time filling his tires up. Clearly he felt his day and his schedule was much more important than mine. I said all kinds of terrible things under my breath, flipped him off (out of view) and prayed that he shits his pants today. Dipshit was wearing douchey sunglasses. It's cloudy today. I really hope he shits his pants today, preferably wherever he needed to be in such a hurry that he couldn't wait in line like a civil human being.

  • @wink0erin that is the most evil wish I've ever heard, and I love it!!! I hope that jerk shits his pants too!

  • @labro I decided against a house because it was so close to an elementary school and my realtor (who was thankfully honest as f) disclosed that the drop off loop would go right past my house, so leaving/returning during the morning drop off or afternoon pickup would be an ordeal. I live within a mile of an elementary school now but get absolutely no traffic from it because most the kids ride the damn bus.
@cocobellaF Glad you had a good appointment! What a tease though, but it's good you decided to wait until H is with you!
@jenjen047 I hope you get better soon!
@caseface5 Ugh, that absolutely sucks. What a jerk. I hate when people on their way out do everything in their power to fuck over those who stay. I really hope this gets changed. Is there a grievance policy or someone over the Sup. you can talk to?
@untouchablets Your mouse story reminded me of a lizard story... I worked at a pet store and one of the floor employees forgot to put the lid back on the anole aquarium after selling one to a customer. I worked back in the kennel area and I was finding and catching lizards for a week. Some ended up out in the store and would scare people.
@jenna8984 Holy shit. That is a mess of a story.
