Please help me with bustle style!

Hey guys!!

I have a dilemma. I have no idea what kind of bustle would look best with my dress. I've looked over all of them and I just can't imagine how my dress will look with each of them. Suggestions? Pictures of your similar dress with bustle? Anything to help! Thank you so much!

  • Best bet would be to talk to a seamstress.
  • My future MIL is actually quite a good seamstress and has done all my alterations so far, but we can't decide on a bustle style. She's never done a bustle before and is quite technically proficient so I'm not worried about that, just picking a style.
  • You are very lucky that your Mom is a great seamstress but personally, I would not want someone's first bustle to be mine. When I think of that, I can't help but compare to being okay with a thoracic surgeon doing urology surgery.

I think a lot of alteration shops will do free consults. It might be a way to get some good ideas for your particular dress and then if you are happy with your Mom doing the alterations, let her put the ideas into action.

  • If you know your designer - you can look up on youtube how to bustle it as many designers/bridal shops show how to bustle that particular gown...  The best one I saw and I quote "Designers design trains to look great when they're down, not when they're bustled up" ... Basically - use what works and looks best when you start lining it up...  Think of the bustle as being 100% functional, not about style.  It's better to have a secure bustle than it is a flimsy one that one catch and it's ripped/done...
  • a French/under bustle might look nice. Basically the dress is bustled under the dress instead of on top. Basically it turns the dress into a trainless look because it's all tucked under. So the loose fabric on your dress on the back show off & the bustle isn't competing with your sash,
