Got laid off today .... drink with me?

edited April 2016 in Chit Chat
Yup.   The title says it all.  My employer claimed that we are doing so well, yet they laid off at least 5 people today that I know of (including me).  I'm pissed as hell, but the good news is that I got a severance package and I'm also getting paid for my remaining vacation.  And I'm eligible for unemployment.

So I'm a bit drunk right now on a batch of Texas Martinis my husband made.   Someone else drink with me?

  • Very sorry to read that. Layoffs are big where I live right now so I know of people that have had a similar experience. Sounds like you got the best exit package possible. Take a few days to rest and relax ... 'clink' wine is in my glass.
  • Thanks everyone
  • I'm so sorry. That sucks.

I don't drink, but I'll have some orange juice.
  • Sorry to hear this. I don't have a glass of wine right now but cheers anyway! Good thing you got such a good severance package! Good luck figuring out the next step.
  • I am so sorry Guac! I just saw this. I was drinking last night for no reason, so now I'll make it a tribute to you.

  • Oh that is awful. I'm so sorry.

  • Ugh!! Pretend I have some Bailey's in my coffee and I'm toasting you with that right now.
Glad you have time with severance and vacation before unemployment would need to kick in. I'm sure you'll get some leads soon! Positive vibes!

  • Sorry for this news.  That sucks.  But upside is you don't have to have conference calls late at night anymore :)

I hope you find something even better soon!

  • I'm so sorry, guac. I, too, am glad you can find the silver linings and given what (little) I know about you and your work, I'm sure you'll find a new position soon. I hope you take care of yourself, too. Maybe take a week or two (or seven) to just take off, relax and center yourself.

If I got laid off today, my veggie garden would kick ass this summer.  Sorry this happened, but I hope you find something great.

    SO TRUE!
  • So very sorry to hear this!  You're being positive about it all.  Still sucks :(

  • Getting laid off in December was probably one of the best things that ever happened to me - I think I'm a renewed person! Hopefully it will be the same for you.  FWIW, your job sounded like it was rather sucking the life out of you, and now you have time to get back to what's important!

  • Thanks everyone.  I watched Die Hard, ate pizza, and drank last night.  Fortunately, I already had appts set up yesterday with my therapist & psychiatrist, so I got to talk it out with them.

I've actually been considering a career change (looking into teaching), so I'm taking this as a not-so-subtle sign.

Now, I need more advil for this hangover.  But it was worth it!

Thanks for all the encouragement :)

If you are considering teaching I would look into online schools (especially if you already have an undergrad degree). I really, really really, recommend University of Maryland University College. It fits perfectly working part time and you only have to student teach your final semester.

I've recommended it to two friends that went though it and they have also been really happy. I do live in Maryland but have had classmates all over the world and the do a really great job hooking you up with schools/mentors no matter where you live.

So sorry about the layoff! It sounds like you have a great attitude, though.

Something to look in to if you want to go back to school: When H got laid off a few years ago, he took advantage of the American Opportunity Credit (I am pretty sure that's what it was called) - he was able to keep collecting his full unemployment benefit while going to school full-time. Pretty sure you can do it for up to four years, meaning you can collect unemployment longer than you would otherwise, while going to school. To be honest, I was jealous when he did that. I have a BA, but I have also been considering going back to school to become a teacher. But it's hard to do with a full time job!

Booo to the lay off, but I hope you'll look back in a few months and realize it was the best thing for you.

Enjoy the "vacation time" while you've got it- do all those little projects you've been wanting to do (when you're rested up ;)).

    Cheers!
  • Aww Gauc, I'm so sorry! Now you can begin your next big adventure! xoxo
