Re: Unpopular Opinions

  • @mrsconn23 these kids are mostly in elementary school. I can't remember any older than that from last year. Draw on a mustache or kitty whiskers with eyeliner...something!
  • I also hate Halloween. I hate being scared and I'm still (at 31 years old) a little afraid of the dark.
    I like Hallowe'en but I also hate being scared and the dark. {at 29}

    Fun fear story - there's a haunted farm near me and I wanted to go so bad, but during the day. {day time = less scary because you can see!}
    I bugged my parents, and finally my dad took me {I was likely about 15-ish}

    We did the haunted house. Apparently my dad knew how this would end because a bucket dropped randomly and I screamed. Multiple times he would point out the 'exit' and let me know we could leave at any point. I kept saying no, but held his hand/arm tight.

    By the time I saw the actual end of the haunted house, I was glad I got through it without sobbing. Before we leave, my dad slows mildly and points out the last thing just at exit. Some guy pacing behind bars in a 'jail cell'
    Oh okay.
    Guy grabs the bars, pulls them aside {they're rubber ...} and acts like he'll attack people, screaming and waving himself at people.
    I scream and jump on my dad's back. I'm 5'1" and he was basically 6ft

    He's laughing and carries me out, because I refuse to let go until we're "at a safe distance from that damn house that might kill me!"

    He saw it coming because he heard the screaming at a few other people. It was the last thing to scare those who were already scared.

    Jerk.

    And I hate Halloween.  I cannot wait until my kids are too old to care about it.
    I love Halloween, but I think parents should make at least some effort to get the kid in a costume. The area I'm in is mostly poor and Hispanic and probably 90% of my trick-or-treaters last year were just in their street clothes. I'm not sure if it's a cultural thing to not wear a costume or if it's an affordability thing, but I feel like not dressing up turns your kid from a trick-or-treater into a beggar.

    eta - and I dont' mean it needs to be a store bought costume either, but at least tie a towel around the kids neck and say "i'm a superhero" or something.
    We've (DH is not a fan of Halloween either) always gotten the kids costumes.  We've never let the kiddo go out with no costume.  He doesn't ToT anymore because he's too old.  The last few years he did, his typical costume was jeans, a flannel, and a creepy mask.  I agree that you have to make an effort or make your kids make an effort to dress up if they want to go out.  But once they're in 7th or 8th grade, they should also be cut off from ToT.
    Why? Too young to party and most parents don't wanna host a bunch of kids to party.
    Honestly, I did t.o.t until I was in gr. 12. My mum said if I was going to go, I had to be respectful. Not going super late, let the little kids go first, be safe, etc etc.

    I'll give out candy to the older kids especially if they've put some thought into the costumes. If it's just older kids candy seeking, I'll turn them away.

    FTR, I love Hallowe'en, in our house it's the big holiday. I hate Christmas with the passion of a thousand suns. As soon as I hear Christmas carols start in stores, my ears bleed.

    Oh when I went out I did dress up, even if it was a simple costume.

    Christmas brings sad memories, so my family doesn't do xmas well and I get overly emotional about songs, etc. {both grandfathers passed close to xmas and my friend who passed had a bday near xmas}

    Goal every year, do xmas shopping before December.

    I never turn anyone away not in costume but I want to. Where I live now I don't think we've had any without costume although I did call out a few older kids for coming back to the house twice in like 5 min. I was like really at least fess up, the kid kept denying it.

    Edit: I think about trick or treating too because next year the baby will be just under 1 year old for Halloween. yet I still want to dress him up and take him to a few houses to look cute but I don't want people side eye me since obviously the candy would not be for the baby (and I want the dress up part not the candy anyway).

    We didn't take our son out until he was two. At 18 months he was just a little too young and it was too cold. We dressed him and daddy up and took pictures, then he got really excited and helped me hand out candy. That was exciting for him. The next year he got to go to a few of the houses in the neighbourhood and get some candy then come home and help me again. This year he and daddy will do the same.

    STUCK

    Yea I figure we might go to the couple neighbor houses we know and then just chill and hand out candy or something. I love babies in costumes so I definitely want to dress him up in some way.
  • I've said this in an UO thread before...but I hate Friends. I don't get it. I don't laugh. I look at those lists of "The 40 most hilarious moments in friends" and don't understand. I've tried it several times. I really want to like it, because everyone seems to...but I just...don't.

    I'm that way with Seinfeld.  The main characters are essentially all selfish, superficial a**holes.  Maybe that is what other people find funny?  I want to like the characters in shows I watch.

    I really like adult cartoons like Family Guy/American Dad/South Park/etc.  But not the Simpsons.  It again comes down to the characters.  I find most of them annoying.  Though I like Marge and the baby, who communicates non-verbally.

  • I don't care for chocolate.  I can eat it.  I don't think it tastes bad, but it's just a "meh" taste, so I rarely eat it.  Though white chocolate is completely awful.  There are few things I can't choke down and that is one of them.  Just thinking about it makes me want to start gagging.

    I also don't like sweet tea or biscuits.  Which, in the South where I currently live, is akin to kicking puppies.  For those of you who don't know, because I didn't until I moved here, "sweet tea" is iced tea where the sugar has already been added for you.  Usually by the cup load....and I mean for one glass.  It is also gag-inducing for me because of the sheer sickly sweetness of it.

    You bite your tongue!
  • I would like Halloween more if adults didn't ruin it.  I think the kids are always fun, as long as they're as well behaved as they can be (I do cut slack for kids who are obviously just excited, not bratty).  I'm hosting a party that I think will be a good time.  But the entire bar crawl scene part of Halloween, I'm not down with.

    I love Thanksgiving, b/c it's about food.

    I'm a total Scrooge when it comes to Christmas.

    I also have to get over all of this, b/c K adores all holidays.  There are lights and eyeballs in our window right now.  And I'll have a tree now, first one in like...11 years?  However, her family's traditional NYE part involves using a saber to pop off a champagne cork, so I am so there for that.

    I can't stand going to the movie theatre anymore. And I'm 125% tired of Marvel/DC movies and stories.  All of them.  I'm barely hanging onto Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on TV right now.  There are so many other great comics out there, with interesting and varied stories.  At least Locke and Key is supposed to be getting a series.  I can think of a dozen others I'd adore seeing on the screen that would be better than anything they're doing with Marvel/DC right now.
  • I love Thanksgiving more for the days off versus the food.  We get 4.5 days off for T-giving.  1 for Christmas.  What? I do think I like Christmas more.

    Halloween is MY Holiday.  I do wish it was mid October though.  The weather late October can be so hit or miss in the midwest/northeast area.  2 weeks CAN make a difference.

  • I really like Taco Bell.
    Me too!

    Also, I love TG and Christmas.  I love shopping for gifts and giving them.  And I love, love, LOVE TG foods for the most part.  Bring on the cranberry.  Oh I have an UO about cranberry...I *love* *love* *love* the canned shit.  LOVE it.  I know most people think it's gross, but MORE FOR ME.

    Canned cranberry lover too!! Jelly. None of that 'whole cranberry' shit. Fuck off with that.
    Ideal is Ocean Spray brand but they're dicks and don't dish out enough cans for people.

    I have legit eaten a can of it before. Alone. Because H hates it. BAHAHAHA WIN FOR MEEEEE

    Me too!  I like the canned stuff as a super, quick and easy dessert.  I use it multiple times a year for that.  Just cut off a couple "slices" for a little bit of sweet after lunch or dinner.

    However, my H thinks it is an abomination.  "Abomination" is his favorite term for food/drink things he especially doesn't like.

    Oh, here's his UO.  He grew up in the Pacific Northwest and acts like coffee is a religious object.  He only drinks black.  To use sugar, cream/milk, and/or flavoring, etc. is...an abomination of the highest order.

    Do they not have the typical unsweet tea in Canada?  That is a drink staple for me.  I usually have a jug of it in my fridge.  The unsweet tea is served all over the U.S., it's just in the South (as far as I know) that they have the "sweet or unsweet" choice.

    The only iced tea you used to be able to buy commercially was Nestea (blech) then Arizona came up here but they're all sweetened up. You can get some smaller companies now that make unsweetened iced teas, but I just make my own. I make simple syrup for FI and he puts as much as he wants in his iced tea and I drink mine without. It's good too because I can give the decaffeinated ones to my son.

    I am soooooo late to this, but I wanted to chime in on the tea thing.

    I was almost disowned when H's family found out I can't stand sweet tea.  My mouth finds it to be one of the most disgusting things on the planet (right up there with Image result for minion banana gif).
    I don't tolerate sweet things well, and the sweeter it is, the less I like it... and the amount of sugar in the sweet tea H's GM and mom make renders it virtually sugar water.  I actually asked his GM if she was making it right after the third cupful of sugar went into the brew.  She laughed and said, "Honey, it STILL won't be sweet enough."

    Barf.

    It's also apparently a "Southern" thing to put sugar in your grits (according to H and his family). Blech. Pass me the Tabasco instead.

    Edited because I wanted to add the minion.

    I hate stuffing.   And pumpkin pie.   It's mostly a texture issue for me.  Stuffing is like oatmeal to me and as soon as it touches my tongue, my mouth sends the 'GTFO' signal.  Same with pumpkin pie, but I'm also not big on the taste of pumpkin.  I will do a pumpkin roll that has a fuckton of cream cheese frosting rolled up in it.

    I guess I've always been lucky because my family does a crap ton of food, so I can avoid the stuff I don't like during holidays. :D

    DH's family makes this turkey casserole with TG leftovers (they call it 'turkey hot dish') and I hate it since it's like 60% stuffing.  I am a disappointment to them all. ;)

    Southerner, here. I don't drink sweet tea and I don't like grits. Or biscuits and gravy. I will eat a biscuit with almost anything, but if you put that white sausage gravy on it I will promptly throw it in the trash.
