Wedding Woes

Hump Day

Kind of slow-motion-running my way through the week.  Sick of STBXH's up and down emotions.  Annoyed at some things at work that are small and unrelated to each other but added up are frustrating.  Etc.  But we're on a stretch of lovely weather...and all three kids have been sniffling but their at-home tests were all negative.  Clinging to my silver linings.  Wishing everyone a good Wednesday!

Re: Hump Day

  • DefConn is back at school today.  Woohoo.  He was *so* bored by the end of the day yesterday.

It's going to be hot, hot, hot the next couple days.  I'm debating what to wear to this concert tomorrow.  I think a dress may be the way to go.

My boss has picked up a bunch of projects for our team lately and has had me managing most of them.  He also sends people to me for training on one-off stuff.  This is the stuff I live for at work.  I love projects and training, but if I wanted a full time role in either area I'd have to go back to the office.  So it's nice to do it within my team.

Boo to STBXH being awful and work stress.

SSDD otherwise.  This upcoming weekend is one where we have no plans before we go on stretch of busy weekends.
  • @ei34, good luck with it all!  Sometimes the small wins and silver linings are what we need to cling to.  I hope your kids start feeling better soon.

It is showings time again.  I put my rental ad up yesterday and my H has our first showings today.  Not quite the onslaught I previously had, but a good amount of people have contacted me.  We'll see.

A weird development.  I complained about this a couple weeks ago.  We were supposed to have someone rent it.  Everything was a "go", except for the background check for her and her b/f.  She was supposed to come bring us the deposit, but didn't show up or reply back to any texts.

Within a couple hours of posting my ad, that same person sent me a FB message.  She claimed her car had been broken into on the day she was going to meet us.  And her phone got stolen.  And she didn't know how to get in touch with us.  I didn't point out the obvious.  That she could have gotten back in touch with me over FB.  Like she had literally just done.  Her story doesn't quite hold water for other reasons also and my H didn't want to offer it to her again.  BUT her previous landlord gave a great reference and she's a S8 tenant, so we don't need to rely on her for most/all of the rent, and I talked him down.

But I told her we already had showings scheduled for noon today.  If she can come bring the deposit before then, at 11am, we would hold the house for her while we do the background check.  She said she would.  So, we'll see.

We also have two more units in that same location, but they aren't quite ready yet.  If it works out with her and we also get more apps in, maybe we can parlay those into one of the other units.

  • If you're watching This is Us - I have not seen this week's ep but I hear these next few might kill us.
"Miguel" was just .... THESE FKN WRITERS WANT TO KILL US
  • Has anyone been to Ocean City, MD? N and I are planning a long weekend there (with kids) and I've never been. If anyone has any tips or recs, that would be great!

SSDD. Don't want to be here. Blah.
  • @banana468, I love that we both have the 12 yr old mindset.  Lol
@ei34 ugh to STBX.  Just put him on ignore ignore ignore.
@short+sassy 😮‍💨 you are so busy with your rentals.  Good luck on the showings.

It’s hot as a MF here too. But next week it’s going down to the 70’s.  Wtf. Can’t we just gradually get this weather increased like mother nature intended?  For those who forgot, I’m in long sleeves till the 25th.  So I kinda want 60’s and 70’s to blend in, lol.

Yesterday I did cave and turned on my a/c way earlier than normal. I couldn’t take it anymore.  Also, my parents gifted me an inflatable hottub and it’s glorious.  They told me they wanted to come up and set it up for me but because of all their retirement travel probably not till early July. My arms are still not 100 recovered, and I don’t know if I even could set it up if they were…But I think the jets would be great on my arms & torso to quicken the recovery so I used taskrabbit and got someone out to set it up for me. She never did it before but used a youtube video and got it done within 1 hour.  Well worth the money! Hey, I may not be very handy - but I am resourceful.

  • Happy Hump Day! Sorry for the up and down, Ei. Hopefully summer break means the work annoyances will level off, but I know that means more time with STBXH, so not exactly something to look forward to.

I'm kind of upside down today. We had our monthly earlyAF call, so I didn't walk the dog before work. Now we're both fidgeting waiting for lunchtime to go. Nothing much else going on. I'm debating updating our phones. The ones we have are ok, if getting a little slow, but H dropped his and cracked his screen yesterday. I'm not sure if it's worth paying to fix a 4 year old phone or just trade them in and get the deal.
  • @casadena, I'm so happy y'all can allow DH to stay home with G.  I'm sure that will take a lot of stress off both of you.
  • When you know someone has a pitbull without them saying they have a pitbull...

    Do you accept large dogs?

Me:  Possibly.  My insurance prohibits about 8 different breeds.  What breed is your dog?

    He's a 75 lb mixed breed.

Me:  What kind of breed(s) does he look like.

He's a really good dog.  Is the yard fully fenced in?  What is the pet deposit?

    (Answered those questions)

I'd like to come see it, if you will accept my dog.

Me:  That's not really up to me.  I have to go by my insurance carrier's requirements.  What breed(s) does your dog look like?  (Am I seriously having to ask this a second time)

She finally admitted he is a pit mix.  Right.  Because of course he is.  Unfortunately, that breed is super common in this area because Louisiana is the capital of illegal dog fighting.  I have nothing against pit bulls.  I know they don't bite any more often than other dog breeds.  But, when they do, they...along with a few other breeds...tend to have much higher medical claims.  And that's why most/all property insurance policies, including for homeowners, don't allow or cover them.

Akitas are also.  But that's because, relative to dog breed populations, they are one of the most likely breeds to bite people.

  • @Casadena I'm sure that has to be a huge relief, I'm so glad for you.

Well, there was a bit of a shitshow at work after the transfers yesterday, b/c I was cc'd on an email I'm sure the OP didn't intend for me to ever see (this is another person in my office that I worked with when I first came here, but through attrition and changing roles, no longer do now).  I went into his office and grilled him on, "Where exactly did you get the "understanding" that I refused to work with you?  B/c those words have never left my mouth" and they truly have not.  I am really tired of some of the authority figures I work with acting like I (and my other colleagues) are stupid AF.  He eventually apologized and walked the statement back in another email.  Hopefully things can settle down now and I can get back to just sitting in my office and working.

Otherwise, SSDD.  I had another experience of trying to drive to place A and 1. going the wrong direction and 2. not remembering how to get to place A, so I just cancelled my plans and went home.  That's only the 2nd time it's happened, but it's frightening when it does.  Last time I was in the parking lot of a store and couldn't remember how to get home.  I had to pull up a Google map to remember.  It's usually a sign of pure exhaustion and depression, so I decided I needed to start upping the sleep and taking care of myself again.  I'm almost at the 6 month point of being past covid, so a doctor's appointment is also on the horizon for me.
  • Not too much going on over here. My unemployment claim was denied. Poor H is super stressed. I don’t know what to tell him. I’m applying to almost every job and now it’s been almost two months so now I’m applying to the jobs that kind of set me back career wise but there’s not really another option. I am trying to remain positive and I feel like I’m doing as well as I can. If money wasn’t an issue I would love being home. But surviving in Southern California on a single income is not happening. I desperately don’t want to go back to work in the hospital. I feel like it would destroy me. I really hope it doesn’t come to that.

  • @short+sassy it's a major issue w/ dogs and on my really small local chat board I know TWO  people who were bit by dogs.   One is a dear friend who had the bite on her nose.   I'm not a huge dog lover anyway (and I'm married to a guy who is allergic so we won't be owners).

@levioosa I hope something better comes your way soon!

Can you do an appeal?  I've had to do an appeal before and it was successful, but your situation was so jacked up, I can't even believe it still.
  • Not much going on today. I took a spin class this morning for the first time in forever (not counting Peloton). I'm riding in our Y cycle-thon on Saturday to raise money for the Y. It felt good to be back on the bike but I'll be sore tomorrow.

I have theater tickets with my girlfriends tonight. We are seeing Sweet Magnolias. I missed the last play because of being out of town. This is the last one of the season so glad I can make it. Looking forward to a girl's night out.

@levioosa ugh what a mess, I'm really sorry and also hope you don't have to return to a hospital!  I know they're tough positions to come by but are any nearby school districts hiring?  My school and my kids' all went from one to two school nurses during the pandemic and all kept the second nurse on

@Casadena I hope that H being home will relieve some of your stress and the feeling of being pulled in all directions a bit

I don't even get it.  There are 200+ dog breeds out there.  If someone is a renter, then don't get a dog they already know is a breed that most rental owners won't accept.  Choose a dog that is one of the other 190 breeds.

I've never been bit by a dog, but it sounds terrifying.  Especially to be bit in the face, like your friend.  Even if that was a small dog, it would be so scary.

    --------------------------

I told this story a couple years ago but, coincidentally for this same rental property, there used to be a neighbor who ran some "backyard" mechanic's shop on his property.  He kept three guard dogs there, but would let them loose to wander the streets all the time.  Two of them were pitbulls and the third looked like a cross between a pit and a German Shepherd (also a banned breed).

Why did he let them loose?  So he didn't have to feed them.  They foraged in garbage cans.

Those dogs, on two different occasions, attacked my husband and one of our other laborers.  By sheer luck, they didn't bite my H because other people were around to shoo them away.  But my H is 5'11" and they knocked him down to the ground.  They did the same thing to our laborer, except he wasn't as lucky.  He was bit multiple times before a neighbor heard him screaming and ran out to help.

But almost the most unbelievable part was that neither the police nor the SPCA cared much, despite how obviously dangerous and vicious these dogs were.  Both of those attacks were completely unprovoked.  The dogs crossed the street from 20 ft away, to purposely attack.  They were capable of killing a grown man.  Not to mention the tons of kids that live on this street and play in the yards.

The excuse both of those agencies gave was "we went to talk to the owner, but no one answered the door, and the dogs weren't outside".  They'd come every time we called them, but nothing was ever escalated.  The neighbor seemed to have moved them for a month after the second incident.  But then they came back.

Every time we saw those dogs, we called the police and the SPCA.  EVERY.  TIME.  That scumbag, AH neighbor moved away a few months later.  While I can't say this for certain, I'd like to think it was because he didn't like the police knocking on his door multiple times a week, even if he never answered.

  • Still allergies but at least the weather is warm! H has work dinner tonight so I’m ordering from a restaurant he hates. And watching TV he hates. Happy Wednesday to me.
  • Also- for anyone who started wearing glass, we’re you extra tired when you first started using them? I have a super mild prescription for reading and I’m wondering if it’s contributing to my exhaustion lately.

Nice evening for you @charlotte989875.  I can’t remember if I was more tired when I started glasses. To be fair, when am I not?
@Casadena, that’s so great that it works out for you.
@levioosa, I’m still angry for you.  Wouldn’t hurt to appeal?

  • Also- for anyone who started wearing glass, we’re you extra tired when you first started using them? I have a super mild prescription for reading and I’m wondering if it’s contributing to my exhaustion lately.
My eyes felt so tired from working differently that i think it tricked my body into feeling tired overall, does that make sense?  Like when you first wake up and your kind of squinty or hard to keep your eyes open at the end of the day.  I think it definitely contributes!
  • My dog is a pit mix. I adopted her when she was 6 months old, and was told she was most likely a lab/boxer mix. She was so young it was hard to tell what she was. It was only obvious once she was older that she was a pit mix. Now, I happen to love pitbulls and mixes, and have had them as pets before, so I had no issue. But it's really not that simple to say "just don't adopt that breed".
But the vast majority of the time, people do.

Of course, people can adopt/buy whatever dog they want.  I wasn't saying that.  It just doesn't make sense to me when people will purposefully buy/adopt a prohibited breed.  And then bitch to me about how hard it is to find a rental with their pitbull(s). Yeah. I know it's hard.  For usually the same reason I'm not going to rent to them either.

And I'm not meaning to pick on pit bulls.  That's just the prohibited breed that I'm constantly asked about.  If it was German shepherds, I'd be picking on those.

From my POV, half the people who have dogs out here have pits/pit-mixes.  So every time I have a rental ad, I have to have the same conversation over and over again.  Including the sometimes beating around the bush and trying not to answer my basic question.  More wasting everyone's time.  I even literally explain WHY I need to know what breed a dog is and looks like.

Anyway, sorry for the rant.  I know it sucks a lot more for people trying to find a place in a tight market and I try to be sensitive to that.  But, even with all the magic of cutting and pasting, it's really exhausting to explain the same things, ad nauseum.  Whether it's dogs or something else.

It's been a very long time for me, but that sounds about right.  I'll sometimes have that happen when I get new glasses also.

My H had that happen also when he started wearing reading glasses a few years ago.

But both of our experiences is that it's brief.  Usually just a few days.

  • FWIW we do not rent to dog owners.

Our condo has had to tighten the rules.  The complex is small and has 16 units including ours that we rent.  Over time, the number of tenants who had dogs increased and they just did not pick up after their dogs outside.  The rest of the tenants would talk about how they could not walk on the grass without stepping in the dog excrement.  There was no amount of asking nicely that got people to comply so now the answer is no dogs allowed.

place I got my prescription always says if it's a big difference, do the 20/10 rule.
    20min on, 10min off.
Do not walk/drive in them first few days if you can avoid it
  • Crossing my fingers @levioosa

  • @levioosa I feel so awful that you have to go through this. I hope you're able to get some resolution soon!
  • Good luck @levioosa!  What a terrible string of events for you.
