Re: Monday

  • @MissKittyDanger, BK is so adorable in her dragon cape!
if you flip it, it's a unicorn. SFIL & MIL got it for her bday lol

She will either "rawrrr" at you, or try to hit you with her horn
  • Eh. Most of the boomers in my family (including my parents) have dropped cable and now all stream. So I don't really think it's accurate to paint everyone with the same brush. And my relatives are all on the older side of the boomer age range.

Either way, I just don't see the calls for boycotting it over something like this. The basic Netflix package is $6.99. Less than a dozen eggs near me.
    Lol not here
    That price is with ads

We have either the $17 or $21 package

Ok, but my point is that you can get a Netflix package for $6.99 a month. You've chosen a higher priced monthly package.

Right.  I just looked it up: Basic pricing in Canada is $5.99/mo w/ ads, $9.99 for the basic, $16.49 for Standard and $20.99/mo for Premium.  So you could pay for a basic w/ ads and are choosing not to.   But I'm still not seeing the support for the argument that Netflix is the big bad business for cracking down on password sharing and that this is why people need to bail.

Also idk if it's in states but I wouldn't even be able to watch netflix at work on break.
They're add in you can't watch off your home network

My mum got Netflix for BK mostly - for when she goes over, she has option to watch something
  • Also if Netflix gave an option for separate fee for extra out accounts - which was their original plan - I personally have no issue. It's our choice that way.

I'm not going to put that as a complaint against Netflix unless you can't watch even on your own smartphone.  Considering tons of employers crack down on web use anyway it would make a lot of sense to not allow streaming on a company network.  DH can't even access Gmail from his work computer.

I get that your mom may only use Netflix for your daughter but that's not necessarily meaning that she shouldn't buy her own account when there could be other options for her.  When my ILs didn't have Netflix but had other options then the kids did things like watch DVDs or channels that my IL's had - because that's what my ILs could offer.   But I don't necessarily agree that your minor child should have the expectation to watch Netflix on her grandmother's television on your account.   I "might" understand the concept that you have Netflix installed on her kiddo tablet that is logged into your Netflix account that BK can use and log into your mom's WIFI.   Because theoretically that device is in the house for a short period of time.

I also get that this is a dead horse - just trying to present the alternative view.
  • From what I got from reading a few things, it seems like Netflix would track your devices/IP address, etc. So you can still log into your account in another location. It wouldn't stop you from logging in at another location, if traveling, for instance. Either way it seems to be on the backburner now.
I was doing some rough research on this last night.  B/c, to my understanding, the normal household does not have a static IP address, you usually have to pay for that and it's usually only businessses.  I was trying to find out if that had changed with PW protection and the like on routers, but I couldn't really find a great answer.
  • I’m in the boat of - I pay for Netflix and we have multiple accounts but we log in at home or phones/computer and it’s us. My mom has our log in for when she watches M but never uses it.

My sister and I share Hulu and HBO max. I pay one she pays the other and honestly we’re getting away with what Netflix is cracking down on. I pay the Hulu (and would anyway) but my sister probably wouldn’t. Just like I don’t care enough to pay for HBOmax but watch a few things here and there that are interesting. If either of those services cracked down we’d be annoyed but not enough to actually pay for them.

All that to say- I’d never get cable again and my steaming bills are way less than when we had cable.

    Bolded.

No, Netflix won't allow it because you're away from your home network. It'll give a 7 day code but after that, nope!

Honestly, it sounds like they're back tracking.
We've already looked into other stuff because BK loves some shows, and so far we're able to get her other stuff streamed separately
  • I really don't want to beat a dead horse. But I've read nothing that says you can't use your own device to sign into your account somewhere else. I even googled about Canada, because that doesn't make any sense to me.

Netflix is not stopping anyone from signing into their own account, even if they are not in their "home network".

Now, you’re on a trip, away from your home wifi, and want to watch re-runs of The Office – what do you do? Well, if you are the primary account owner or you live with them, you shouldn’t need to verify your device. But if you’re away from the “Netflix household” for longer than usual, you MIGHT be asked to verify your device. And yes, the same way we explained how.
