Fri-yay!

Re: Fri-yay!

  • I have…mixed feelings about the tipping culture now. I completely understand that employers use tips to avoid paying fair wages. I was a service industry worker for a long time. That being said, they ask for tips literally everywhere now. Like at the self serve froyo place. I don’t feel like that needs a tip.

I have basically decided that if the worker is making an actual wage (don't get me started on "minimum wage"), I don't tip.  Commission, service, anything where their employer isn't provided an actual wage no matter what sort of customer base is coming in that day, I'll tip.  I didn't know what else to do and some things I'm just not sure why I should be tipping all the time, except that once again the "owner/employer" class is trying to steal from their employees by stealing from me.
  • I will always tip in cash for hair and nails.

And agree that asking for tips at a self serve froyo shop is past the line. I mean, I'm the one who filled my cup with froyo and put the toppings on. You weighed it and told me how much to pay....

I didn't realize you'd been in San Antonio, @CharmedPam!  My grandpa lives there and I've been there a ton.  It's one of my favorite cities.   We're probably going to try to go there this Oct for fall break and swing up to Austin to visit friends.
Yup, San Antionio. First time in Texas actually.  Really a fun city and there’s a few hotels I’d like to go back to and stay at, but I don’t see myself going back there any time soon (unless we do that city again for work).  If I do Texas again, I’m thinking Austin.

Tipping, on the rare occasion I like tipping servers cash so I know they get it and get it that day.  But it’s rare for me, so mostly it’s on my cc.
my nail salon only took cash… I only had pro hair done at ulta and they take the tip on the cc too.  Actually I saw the new trend for “expensive blonde” and I’m SO toying with doing that.  Can I go from black hair to expensive blonde (different shades of blonde, mainly dark blonde for me as a start)?

  • I was just having the tipping conversation last night with friends. My hair person and aesthetician own their own business but rent rooms in a building (one even had an employee at one point). I don't tip them because they set their prices which should include covering their overhead. My friends said they tip their hair people even though they own their businesses too. Now I'm second guessing myself.

For what it’s worth, when I get my hair done by an actual owner, the person who owns the salon, I don’t tip. But I don’t view someone renting a chair as an owner. But like renting a whole actual salon they run independently? Not tipping.
