Snowy Tuesday

We finally got snow!  Only 3-4", we need six to close schools, so no snow day but pretty to look at at least.  I did wake up extra early to shovel but still happy it's here.  How's everyone else?

We have maybe the same or even less - but no school.

I'm on pins and needles with snow days this year hoping that they stop this knee jerk nonsense of closing schools for so little.

The long weekend was nice overall.  Skiing was fun, we threw in some snow tubing, and the kids loved their cousin time.  One yikes moment- sis and BIL had rented a big mountain house on VRBO (the kids and I were their guests) and on Friday night as I was taking pillows off my bed (I don't need four pillows I need one), as I lifted the pillows, there was a mouse under one!  Eek!  Well, it was either a mouse or a chipmunk, but there were droppings.  I don't know how I didn't scream and wake the kids.  We're very much city folk not country folk and it showed bc we were out of there.  BIL booked us in adjoining hotel rooms nearby and we lived to tell the tale.  But jeez.  Other than that, a lot of wintry fun :)

LOL @ei34!  We have to make sure our Christmas decorations are in solid containers and taped over if in corrugated or I'm going to shake out droppings.  I have an Advent calendar that had to be Lysol sprayed a few years ago.  But we're in the woods and they built a nest in DH's car.

It's also a mast year for acorns so you'll likely see more.

@ei34, I'm glad you all had a fun winter holiday weekend!  Other than the mouse.  I'm eeking with you.

More like an icy Tuesday for me.  All schools and government offices are shut down.  It doesn't have to be even a 1/2 inch of snow.  Just a threat of ice will do it, lol.

I was worried about driving to work because on the news last night they said the roads were going to be icy until noon.  We had rain last night for a few hours.  Most of the bridges are closed.  But I don't have to go over a bridge and the roads were fine, at least from my house to my work.

But when I got to my truck to leave my house, the doors were frozen shut!  I didn't know that could happen.  But my H was able to get them open.  Then I had to sit in the running car for almost 10 minutes before my windshield ice melted enough to leave.

It's going to be even colder tomorrow, but no more rain.  Plus I WFH on Wednesdays.

    Happy Tuesday!
I believe schools in this area (and my brothers) are closed but due to below freezing temps, not snowfall. I’m hearing on the news that the top 10 coldest places in the world right now are in Canada. Sooooo *hugs* to my fellow Canadians.
Had a good(ish) weekend with my brother.  I didn't get to see my parents because mom had shingles.  I gave my nephews their Christmas presents and my brother did NOT want more toys in the house so I got them fluffy blankets, books and games.  The three year old was really honest when he opened his paw patrol (favorite show) blanket and said “I don’t like it”.  I think THEY wanted toys but my brother obviously doesn't need anymore in the house.  I gave one of my nephews the game Clue and I think he liked it.  He kept on saying murdery.  “I know who the murdery is”.  Lol. He also taught me how to play chess.  Well, not really.  You can’t really learn from a 7 year old. Verdict; I still hate Chess.

Say that louder for the USPS in the back! We didn’t have mail delivered Tuesday AND Friday because they predicted snow.  Tuesday our area got maybe 1.5”.  And Friday probably 2”.
Glad it was fun @ei34! But nope nope nope on the mouse. If I even think one is in the house I won’t sleep. Actually if I know any bug or insect is in the house I can’t sleep.  Did you see the mouse or just the evidence?

It's cold AF here.  We had a great 3-day weekend.  I'm tired AF today because I didn't sleep well last night, ugh.

Some reviews from what we saw over the weekend:

We watched Killers of the Flower Moon.  My only complaint is there are some plot holes that were distracting for a moment, but overall good movie.  Lily Gladstone is deserving of all the awards and praise for her performance.

We watched the first episode of Fool Me Once on Netflix.  It's a little hokey, but I am interested in the story.

I also started watching Five Star Chef on Netflix.  It's like...if Top Chef and Chef's Table and a Gordon Ramsey show had a baby in a swanky high-end hotel in London and it's restaurant wars every week.  LOL

We also watched Pete Davidson's new stand-up special.  It has some funny parts, but it's mostly...yikes.

Most of the football games were boring this weekend.  Meh.

SSDD otherwise.  Feeling very Monday for a Tuesday.  We had a 2 hour delay this morning.

@CharmedPam, oooff, Canada.  That's a startling statistic!  Sorry my northern neighbors.

A lighthearted argument my parents had every year during Christmas was about presents for my cousins.  My mom got the gift requests from the aunts/uncles.  Which were similar to your brother.  "They don't need more toys, clothing would be better."  And included clothing sizes and what clothes they needed.

My dad, "I will NOT be the uncle who only gives clothes!"

The compromise would be one toy gift and one clothing gift for each child.

It makes sense when there is risk of ice - but yeh we've had at least one and it was just .... why?

My mother still tells the story of the chipmunk.  Back in the day my dad was a long-haul trucker and my mom would be alone in our house in the country for long periods of time.  One night she went to bed but kept hearing weird noises, only to suddenly discover that there was a chipmunk in her bedroom.  Much screaming commenced.  But .... no husband or young children (yes, once she had us we were the ones to save her from the vermin) anywhere nearby.  She called her brother in the neighbouring town in the middle of the night to come to her house to trap and remove of the chipmunk.

It is quite cold here, and I am pretty much as south as you can get in Canada, if you ignore Point Pelee.  My rabbits and chickens are refusing to leave their heated pens, and I don't blame them.  My dog, meanwhile, insists on going for walks as much as she can in this weather.  So I get the joy of going out in it at least twice a day.

@banana468, I did not see anything from the emmy’s last night but was her dress in response to her 2023 SAG controversial one? Or has it been 2022 already?

@“short+sassy", he doesn’t want clothes either! Lol. It’s like ugh!!! I’m getting them toys next year because I wanna buy their love lol.
actually I’d love to start a tradition of a weekend getaway to hotels with indoor water parks for them… but I also get the line of “we’re farmers.  We can’t leave our animals that long”. Soooo like, what do I do? He is planning his first vacation this summer, so it would be interesting to see what he does then. I think rely on his neighboring farmers.

And I get it.  You can't stop on ice.  But there are remedies we can put in and it's winter in NE.  We have the infrastructure to deal with this.  And it's not reasonable to cancel school because it snowed when the snow fall is so little.

The only things around here that are closed are the schools and some restaurants.  DH was at work on time.   When the snow makes a time dent into the commute I get it but this is starting to turn into 'any winter weather on a week day = no school' and that's not a reasonable approach in an area that has the infrastructure to deal with it.

Our schools are closed, but it's because of the horrible temperatures.  Our utilities company sent out a message about conserving emergy as much as possible or we'll be facing rolling brownouts, if not black outs.  Rich parents here always get up in arms about school closings but we have a lot of poverty in our community and a lot of busriders.  Those kids can't be standing outside/walking home when the temps are 0° or lower (that's cold enough but poverty usually means not the best of warm clothes/shoes either).  Hell, the high today is 12° and hurts my face/skin.   There's even businesses closing or having people WFH to help out.

I'm kinda veklempt.  There was a makeup vanity I'd been wanting.  I decided to buy it for myself to celebrate 30 days of sobriety.  Aaaannnddd...it's gone.  Now I can't find another one I want.  So I'm peeved.  This isn't my longest stretch, but it's been the easiest and it's the one that's going to stick.

Otherwise, SSDD.  I really want to go socialize this evening, but it's still so damn cold, I've just been going home.

Weekend was a lot. Saturday I hiked and then tried to wind down from the week. Unfortunately Sunday Grandma was very ill so I met her at UC and helped out all day which was exhausting. It just felt like being at work all day between her and my parents (and the fact that we were at one of my company’s facilities so it really did just feel like I was at work). Yesterday I died and my period must be coming because I am beyond exhausted. Otherwise SSDD. I hope everyone is staying warm!

@CharmedPam oh I saw it.  We made eye contact.  If it was a Disney movie it would've said hello and we would've had a "we understand each other!" moment.  Ugh that's hard with the gifts- totally get the "nothing else can fit inside this house" but also, the joy of giving a fun toy to an eager recipient.

I'm sorry that your weekend ended up being more of the same @levioosa, you need down time!

I am so conflicted with the gifts thing.  Our kiddos are in a funky age area where they're at least aging out of the giant gifts that are often made out of plastic that take up so much space.  The clutter in this house is so bad.

It's mid 30s here and it's starting to melt/shift to rain/sleet.  I think the kids are going to earn some $ and shovel but first my daughter is going to get deodorant.  Part of the ADHD is that she's absent minded but I know when she forgets even if I'm blindfolded.

We've had 3 days of temps below zero.  It's +3 now and is warming up.  Schools were closed on Friday because we were supposed to get 6+" of snow and blizzard conditions.  We got about 3" and it wasn't as bad as predicted.  I was supposed to go onsite to teach a class but it was rescheduled late Thursday so I was wfh in my cozy clothes.

@ei34 - eek about your critter experience.  Hope your sis and dh get their money back from the VRBO.

We had mice last winter in or garage.  I saw one run as I drove in on day.  Got jaw traps and set a line along the wall where I had seen it.  Got 3 in 3 days.  On the second day I was pretty confident I had a good system of emptying the trap.  Pick it up with a grabber, put in a grocery bag, release the trap, tie the bag and in the garbage.  On day 3 I picked up the trap and Mr. Mouse started moving!  I'm not ashamed to say I dropped the trap and he died a long cold death because I couldn't bring myself to hit it in the head or anything else.  The next day the trap and all went in the trash.

Over the summer we replaced the bottom seal of our garage door and filled some tiny holes around outlets.  None so far this season.  Fingers crossed!

Our schools are also closed for less than 2 inches of snow. I think it’s BS

Our schools had a 2 hour delay. DD's schools were canceled Friday for snow (didn't get nearly as much as predicted) and today because it was -25 with wind chill factor. She's going crazy trying to keep 3 energetic boys entertained inside. She was happy to go to work yesterday and let the nanny deal with them lol!

Sorry if this is TMI but our ejector pump/lift is still on the fritz from yesterday. We have been on the list all day for the plumbers but haven't heard anything. I doubt they will get here today - dinner out again. I at least could shower at the Y today but not toilet flushing is getting gross. H fussed at me because I flushed this morning. I had to explain that girls have to use toilet paper all the time so it has to be flush some so that a clog doesn't develop! We will call again tomorrow morning to make sure we are still on the list!

I get the toy thing but it is always fun to give kids something they really want. I think we will be doing experiential things more in the future. Either going to shows or paying for camps kind of thing.

Vortex hitting here - not as bad as Alberta etc - but it's still cold.

BK is finally in MOST 5t things, so I tossed all the 4t items into donation bin.
Downside is I didn't realize how much 4t pj's she had  :\  so I'm making a stop at the store on my way home to get at least one spare pair.
My mum was able to pick up some on clearance. Honestly if I could just get her pj pants, I'd be truly fine.

I think last thing is her actual pants being still 4t - but 5t jeans are so big on her!
At least the waist is still adjustable so I can probably get away with them for a bit.

@ILoveBeachMusic, it's obviously not perfect and I hope your ejector pump/lift gets fixed tomorrow.  But to decrease some of the TP bulk in the toilet, throw the TP away in the kitchen trash.

I often use "flushable" wipes...flushable is a lie, because they can build up and cause a blockage...and I throw those away in the kitchen trash.  They'd be even easier than TP and I've never had that cause a gross smell in the trash can.

We got 2 feet Saturday into Sunday. Our schools were open today but we’re expected to get another 1-2 feet tonight/ tomorrow so they’re all closed tomorrow. We’re expecting daycare to be closed so planning more indoor fun for M.

J still working on gaining weight. We’re all tired and hoping this round of feeding adjustments helps. Ugh.

When we have had issues, I have purchased 4 gallon garbage bags at The Dollar Store.  I keep some under the sink in the bathrooms.  They are inexpensive to use, and contain any potential odors. I can usually toss them directly into the garbage bin in the garage, but even when tossed in the kitchen bin, it is never an issue.
