Receiving Line

Hey everyone,

So I'm a little worried about time constraints with the wedding. Our ceremony starts at 2:30, will be done by 3, and then our reception starts at 5:30. We will be doing family photos right after the ceremony (trying to keep this to immediate family, as my fiance's family is HUGE), so that'll be until 3:30. I'm not that crazy about having a receiving line..but my inlaws think it's necessary directly after the reception. I was thinking either a)do it right before the reception (my Mom suggested this, as this is what she and my Dad did) or b)Just greet everyone at the reception after/during dinner. My Mom bought the limo, and since she is paying for it, she doesn't want our receiving line right after the ceremony, so that we can get right to our picture location. However my FI's Mom wants us to do right after. I'm torn because I want to make everyone happy! Opinions and advice are greatly appreciated :)

Re: Receiving Line

  • We're doing one because not everyone can attend the reception, and it helps eat up some time. We have a 2pm wedding and a 4pm reception. The problem is they are only 10 minutes from each other. We're having a Catholic ceremony with no Mass, which is still 40 minutes according to my priest so here's my thought.

    2pm ceremony begins
    2:45 receiving line set up
    2:45 - 3:10-3:15ish (we have 200 coming) receiving line
3:15-3:20 we leave church (guests will have bubbles)

That's still a gap but it cuts it down. Plus the parking lot is a 5 minute walk and if people are chatting, and there is always traffic, so they should arrive at the hall pretty close to 4. At least, I hope.

Do you think half an hour is enough time for a receiving line with 200 people? I'm only asking because I was having this debate with my wedding coordinator and she says that if you have about 200 people a receiving line can take up to 45 mins! But I guess it also depends on who's in the receiving line, is it just you and FI? Or are your parents and his parents joining you? Just curious!!
