What are you reading?

What is everyone reading? Would you recommend it? Can you give me a small summary?

I feel like I go in really good book spurts and then I read terrible ones for a while.

Also, would we be interested in putting up a book sticky? I know a lot of us like to read. We can add title, author, summary, etc.

Thoughts?

Whatever happened to the book club?  I'm nearly done with that Sleeping Beauty book, though I have a hard time reading it at night before bed as it isn't exactly relaxing.

My absolute favorite ever is Sky Burial (http://www.amazon.com/Sky-Burial-Epic-Story-Tibet/dp/0385515480). It's a touching story of a Chinese woman whose husband does not return from war, so she goes on an epic journey to Tibet to find out what happened to him.  It's a really great story of love, loyalty, and portrays both the Chinese and Tibetan culture beautifully.

Similarly, the book "Shanghai Girls" by Lisa See is really great (http://www.amazon.com/Shanghai-Girls-Novel-Lisa-See/dp/0812980530/ref=pd_sim_b_2) It's about two Shanghai sisters in the 1920's who enjoy all the luxuries of being upper-class Chinese beauties in the international city of Shanghai, then faced with poverty and war, and their relocation and emotional journey as they try to build new lives in the US.   I bought her other book "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" which has even better ratings, but I haven't read it yet.

I'm also a big fan of Janet Evonovich's Stephanie Plum series, per SamiJoe's influence.  I have read a few of her earlier books and HATED them, but the "One for the Money", "Two for the Dough", etc. are really laugh-out-loud funny, and not overly sexed like some romance novels.  Light fun reading before bed!

Ugh! I know! Book club tanked, and I think it's all my fault. Damn wedding! ;)

When my crazyness is over, I really want to read Mindy Kaling's new book. I also really want to try and get into the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but it's hard to get into.

I looove Jeffrey Eugenides, I'm reading his latest, The Marriage Plot.

    http://www.amazon.com/Marriage-Plot-Novel-ebook/dp/B0050IERQA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2OHI9NOYYHD9W&colid=1U96OTALS7M3V

I'm also really looking forward to Simon Doonan's new book Gay Men Don't Get Fat, I highly recommend anything by him. It's sharp and funny. You may have seen him on some of those vH1 shows, he's the creative director of Barney's in NYC.

I also recommend If You Were Here by Jen Lancaster, it's her first fiction, but her memoirs are great, too.
    http://www.amazon.com/If-You-Were-Here-Novel/dp/0451234383/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1323796250&sr=1-1

Anything by Stacy Ballis if you like good, smart, chick lit. I also love Phillipa Gregory for some fabulous historical fiction. I'm completely addicted to memoirs and histories, and some great ones have come out. Antonia Fraser's Must You Go is such a wonderful portrait of her relationship and love for Harold Pinter.

CAB, you gotta read half of the book before it catches you, but then you'll fly through the second two books (at least in my experience).  They were good, but I didn't love them like some people seem to.

I read the trilogy, it takes some time and it's not an easy read. I liked the books, but it's so unrelenting, I absolutely couldn't get through the Swedish movies, so I don't know if I'll see the American ones. I also really want to get the Mindy Kaling.

I just started rereading "Two For The Dough," it's been so long since Cal sent them to me and I really just need to finish it already and return them so Sami! I decided to reread since it's been a couple of months since I last read it.

I borrowed the first 2 Hunger Games books from my sister and I am planning on reading those after.

I am reading a random book I found about civil war soldier and the things he is asked to do by the "side" he is on and how he has a hard time with them morality wise.  He unexpectadly falls in love and it get's good.  About 3/4 through it now.  Slow start, but great book so far.  Just hope the ending isn't crappy!

I have another reccomendation on a book, but have yet to find anyone besides me who likes it!  "The Sorrows of Werther" by Goethe.  Old book translated from German, but very in depth.  Great book if you like to (with the chance of sounding super corny here) read between the lines!  :)

"All Other Nights" by Dara Horn

Have you read The Help?  I loved that book.  If you haven't, read it!  If you did and liked it, you should read Mudbound by Hilary Jordan.  It's a similar writing style and really good.  Yesterday Kindle had it on sale for only $.99, and I should have posted it here.  I posted it on MN because people have talked about The Help there.  But it's a good one.

I just finished reading Girls in White Dresses last night by Jennifer Close.  It was okay, but I wasn't crazy about the ending.

I love Emily Giffin books and have read all of hers.  Something Blue was my favorite.

You definitely should finish reading The Hunger Games series, I love it!

But totally team Peeta, as if there was a question.

The only thing I know about the Hunger Games is that kids kill kids.  And I really just don't have any desire to read about that.  Why on earth would it be good???  Seriously, tell me what you actually liked about it (without ruining the plot, obviously).

I realllllly want to read The Help but keep forgetting about it!  I wish I had known about the $.99 deal.  Ah well... anyone have it on Kindle and want to loan it?

Well, it's definitely fiction to its easy to get past the fact that a kid kills a kid. I liked it because it is unique and different than anything I've ever read. It reminded me of 1984 in a way and 1984 is one of my favorite books.

C it was Mudbound that was $.99, not The Help.  I have it on Kindle but loaned it out before so it won't let me loan it again, sorry.

THG is about kids killing other kids, but it's a lot more than that.  Basically it's a society that is broken into 12 districts, which are governened by the Capital.  The Capital is rich and spoiled, and for entertainment holds annual Hunger Games, where one boy and girl from each district are chosen through lottery to enter the arena and fight to the death.  Nobody but the Capital likes the games, and so there is also the conflict with the government throughout the series.

I honestly had no idea what it was even about when I bought it, but a lot of people on E were recommending it, so I bought it and just started reading.  Everyone I know who has read it, of all ages, has enjoyed the series.

I recently finished The Hunger Games and loved it. We saw the movie trailer so FI wanted to read it too. He just finished it and loved it so much that he bought the second one to keep reading instead of waiting for me to borrow it from the library! It's my favorite genre (alternate society...I loved "The Giver" when I read it in 4th grade! Must be what got me hooked on the genre). If you like that genre, I would also recommend "The Handmaid's Tale."
