Calindi was the first screen name I ever had for AOL Instant Messenger when I was a kid.  Back then everyone wanted super unique cool names,  ideally without numbers, and I hated all the "angel" or "princess" crap that some of the girls had.  Even then I was a culture hawk, so I found out that "kalindi" is the daughter of the son god in Hindu culture, and my name is Cate with a "C" rather than the more common "K" so I changed it to "Calindi".  It's been my screen name for a variety of things ever since.

Kendall, you graduated HIGH SCHOOL in 2010?  Wow, I guess I'd feel old if I didn't feel like you were so ridiculously young.

My freshman year of high school i was in JROTC and they require you to "qualify" with a rifle. I had never shot a gun before and was terified.. Until I took a shot. 10.9. bullseye.
    second: 10.8 bullseye.
My coach said it was first timer's luck. I agreed.
    I shot a few more.
    bullseye.
    bullseye.

He demanded me to be on the team, and I was the highest shooter that year, broke a couple records, and became the team captain the year after for the next years of high school (took it from my boyfriend at the time. OOPS!)
Any time I would train a new shooter for my team and they did well, or we brok e arecord after that, coach and I would look at each other wink and say "first timer's luck"

It just became a name I use for a lot of stuff.. and kinda my life motto in general. I am either HORRRRIBLE when I first try something, and will always be horrible at it, or I am sht hott when I do something for the first time and it sticks. There is no happy medium for me apparently lol

FTL - my Dad and FI just bought me a full day of tactical pistol training.  Any tips?  I know it's a bit different than a rifle, I do plan to learn that eventually.  The original plan was to wait until FI qualified during TBS and then he'd teach me, because he wants to wait for them to teach him since he was told it's harder to unlearn bad habits to do it the Marine Corps way.  But I guess they want me to get a permit to carry and buy me a gun for Christmas!  Crazy.

Oh, so not badass!  I think because they both realize with FI being Marines, there will be times I'm home alone (someday with children) for long periods of time and they want me to be able to feel secure no matter where we're living and be able to protect myself and our home.

I'll probably be that person who ends up with a blackeye from the recoil!

Ok so mine is from when I had my first AOL screen name.  I was at my first job and we used to get fussed at for talking so much so we all got AOL screen names.  So Crownsuperstar was born!

Crown- symbol of my sorority symbol

Superstar- is really Super Star as in Mary Katherine Gallagher- I used to walk around the office and do the "Super Star" for some reason I was obessed with that SLN character.  I even dressed like her for halloween several years in a row.

Oh thanks! I think this just made me figure what I am going to be for halloween!

haha wow.. Well they're right. That's why, on average, women have a better shot than men. We haven't already learned bad habits like little boys did watching action movies and playing cowboys an Indians around the house :P
Also, trust yourself. We have a MUCH lower and more centered center of gravity than men. That makes us more balanced and less shaky then them.
There are a few minor things to remember like...
I used to be on a "shooter's diet" because your diet totally affects the way you shoot.
For example, don't eat heavy carbs/protein, or a ton of sugar before you go. sugar makes you focus less and heavy proteins/carbs like pasta and steak require a LOT of energy to break up in your stomach and it actually makes you move more. simple proteins like a protein bar, string cheese, etc are MUCH better to keep you stable. Again this is for a serious shooter so something you could consider for fun, but you don't have to. It's just for sport right? :)

I'm sure they will teach you, but it all comes down to your breathing. It's like running.. you need a steady, smooth breathing pattern to shoot accurately (not precision. Precision is getting the target. Accuracy is shooting the same spot. Accuracy is considered more important because if you are shooting in the same spot every time you can adjust yourself to make that spot the bullseye ;) )

But just have fun. You will fall right into it. It seems much more complicated than it is. Keep your stance a little wider than hip width and focus on the breaths.. That's why it's so relaxing and people like it so much.. you can't shoot well if you are thinking about your PITA boss or what to cook for dinner.. you shoot well if you are hearing yourself breath in.. out... in... out.

I kind agree with that argument.  I am really sketchy about the idea of a gun in the house, especially after we have kids.  It does seem an inevitability at this point that FI will have one in the house (he really wants one and is anxious to learn, but is waiting so he doesn't get those bad habits!) so I might as well know how to use it.  But I'm going to be a total safety freak - bullets will be stored in a separate locked compartment from the gun, which will also be in a locked compartment.

I have a recurring nightmare where I'm stuck somewhere - someone's hitting me and I can't lift my hands to fight back, or there's a fire and my feet are stuck and I can't run.  Taking boxing classes helped that - I started fighting back in my dreams.  I feel like the more things I know how to do, the more capable I feel and thus more in control of my environment.

Love love love shooting. We go to the range at least once a month. But I'm no where as good as you are FTL. I think the only bullseye I've hit was with FI's AK. But other than that as long as I can hit the target I'm a happy camper.

    A- My first inital
    M- My middle inital

Agreed Calindi. that's all you can do. The thing is.. if someone were to break into your house and you have your gun and bullets that safe, there is no way you will be calm and collected enough to get to them, unlock both, load the gun, and aim successfully.
THAT'S why I hate it when people argue that it's for home safety. BUT they are fun, and just another skill to know. I hate hunting.. that makes me sad, but it really is relaxing and exhilarating all at the same time. :)

    Yep, very true.  But that's what pepper spray and a taser are for!!!  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif" border="0" alt="Laughing" title="Laughing" />

FI is a safety freak, so one room in our house will always be a 'safe room' with a heavy door and a deadbolt and a ladder to climb down to safety (it'll be on a 2nd floor whenever possible).  I really like this idea as it gives everyone a plan if something goes wrong - just go to the safe room and lock the door.  It'll probably always be our bedroom.  The gun would be stored in there anyway.

My sn: I was raised by theater folk and gay men. Hence the Bette Midler reference. I am generally dinvinemiss(or ms)em (em is from my first name) on pretty much every site I have to have a sn for. There was already one of those on here (I'll admit it's not turribly creative), so instead I used FI's initial (He's a double B name).

I'm alternately terrified of and fascinated by handguns. I get hunting rifles, because the majority of the males in my family do it, but handguns I jsut have no experience being around at all. Probably that makes me someone who shouldn't have them. I'm with others that I don't see a gun for my safety if the gun is stored in a manner I would find safe (bullets seperate/in a locked safe).

    I love both!

Rose is going to be the middle name of my first girl (assuming I have a girl).  My grandpa told me that when he first met me, my Mom had just handed me to him wrapped in layers and all swaddled since it was midwinter and very cold, and he had to peal back the layers "like the petals to a beautiful rose".  He's always called me his rose so I want to honor that with my future daughter.  Hopefully he'll live long enough to meet her!

Hocus Pocus was one of my all time favorite movies growing up.  I had such a crush on Sean Murray as he appeared as Thackery Binx... but I didn't realize until just now when I went to look up the actor's name for that character that it is the same actor who plays Agent McGee on NCIS!  Not as cute as an adult, sadly.

um haha i've ben waiting for someone to ask - it always happens.

It was the original AOL screen name I had. My cousin and two of our mutual friends (one of which I was "talking to" at the time) made it for me when they were at the Academy and I didn't have email of a sn to be able to contact them - in the pre "kids" having cell phone days. They chose it because i'm a film nut and one of my favorite actors is Sean Connery. We are also a big disney family and at the time I was taking a lot of animation classes in florida at the studio. No laughing please :) one of my random favorite hahaha movies was Darby of gill and the little people due to random disney trivia. It was sean connerys first movie and it was a disney live action. He sings a song called my pretty irish girl and the guys all thought it was flipping hilarious and ran with it. when they did i adopted it and it has now forever been a running joke and after we lost one of them it became a way to remember the good stuff from back then and now it is my default for sn/user names when I don't want to use any variation on my real name.

On the gun thing i think it depends on the people, but there is always the possibility of an accident and so that makes it a very personal choice. I grew up with guns in the house and so did FI. We have also both gone through so many gun/shooting classes and qualification its stupid and each have conceiled carry (I did some work for the sheriff's dept at one point and he apparently has a job where he needs to be able to shoot). We both have our own firearms and ammo is stored elsewhere except for one clip for the pistol we keep out (relative term the others are all kept in a safe) for protection instead of hunting or recreational. That clip is within reach, but we also don't have any kids around which means i'm sure it would all be very different if there were other people besides the two of us around. Personally I'd rather have it and never need it then not have it and need it. I've lived/worked in a lot of bad neighborhoods and been in situations (multiple) where i and other people i've been with been approached by gunmen and the only thing that saved me was having a pistol under the desk. So I'd never live without one, but at the same time safety precautions always.

"spiffy" and "cool beans" are phrases that my best friend and I used quite a bit in 8th grade.  I needed a screename for AIM way back in the day when people actually used it.  So I put the two words together and it kind of stuck.  I've had it for so long now that it is just easy to remember.

As for shooting.  I shoot pistols (.22 binelli and .32 binelli) and rifles (AR-15) competitively.  That's actually how FI and I met.  I'm the better shooter with the pistole (Bullseye shooting--one handed).  He is better with the AR, but I put up a good fight!

I grew up around guns and was taught the proper way to handle them, etc at a very young age.  To be honest, FI has guns laying around his house.  We keep one next to the bed and he keeps one in his car.  We don't have kids and don't plan on having children.  And when children come over, they are kept out of reach.  He carries pretty much everywhere we go (as long as it is legal).  I have a 9mm that I bought for carrying purposes but it is difficult to slide the slide back, which could be a downfall if I don't have one in the chamber when something is going down.  I'm currently looking into a carrying purse as well.  Something kind of fashionable, but also has a side pocket for a gun.

Sorry, I think I've shared too much.  I tend to ramble when it comes to guns and shooting. Smile

Irish - that's one of my family's favorite movies!  We always say, "Darby O'Gill, get in" with that same accent whenever we're trying to tell someone to get in a car or something.  We're weird like that.  And I LOVE that song!  My Dad sings it to me sometimes and it makes me smile.

Are you a fan of "The Quiet Man"?  That's another family favorite.  "Here's a stick to beat the lovely lady" - classic!

I had anoffer for a full ride up in Alaska (since their ROTC has the best college shooting team in the country) but I turned it down because they didn't have the degree I wanted. Sometimes I wish I had taken it because I miss it so so  much... buuuut I wouldn't have met H. And he's my world, with or without shoot. So I'll take it :)
