Military Brides

Introduction

Hi,
I'm bad at this game. (I'm also terrible at remembering to introduce new people to eachother in person.) I have randomly posted on a few different boards but never really introduced myself here.

I was born/raised in North Dakota. I lived in Alaska during part of my schooling. I have a *very useful* degree in Art History.... ....  ...In other news, I love to cook/bake and when I did live in Alaska I loved rock climbing. Well, I still love rock climbing, but North Dakota does not have mountains. FI and I are certified scuba divers as well.

We are gettin' hitched June 2 after a yearlong engagement. He tried to propose last Memorial day but by the time we had almost gotten to the spot he was intending to take me a huge storm hit so we started back home. And as we were heading back the tornado sirens went off. So we ran into a gas station and waited there with the lovely gas station attendant and a truck driver for about an hour for the storm to pass. I think he should have proposed then, it would have been a great story. But he waited until the next day.

After we get married we're hopefully moving out of NoDak so I can go to grad school in Virginia. If he can get transferred. Hoping for the best!

Hey Lambbop!  I was wondering when we we'd get to learn more about you =)  That engagement story is pretty funny.  What are you going to grad school for?
  • Welcome!

    Tell us about your wedding!

  • Ohhh Alaska! I'm jealous. H and I would really love to vacation up there sometime!! I don't rock climb, but I do love camping/hiking/backpacking.

That's story about your almost-engagement is funny.

Good luck getting transferred to VA!

I am going to grad school for Art History. Art History is one of those career paths where a BA is kind of useless... you need at least a MA to be able to work in the field. My emphasis is in American Art, specifically the art between WWI and WWII, the New Deal/Great Depression era.

We are getting married in a teeny tiny 100+ year old chapel in my hometown, and having an outdoor (hopefully!) reception. We have resereved an indoor location just in case. (See the almost engagement story ;-) )

Our colors are all shades of greens -- from FI's greens to middle tone greens in the bridesmaid dresses, to light green hydrangeas and roses. The accent color is bright yellow, and our 5 (yes 5) flowergirls will be in yellow. Our flowergirls are all the daughters of my mom and dad's 2 flower girls :-)

Food will be no less than AWESOME. This was my top priority. We are having an on-site rotisserie turning beef for hot beef sandwiches, polish sausage and sauerkraut (FI's family are Poles), vegetables, fruit, and cold bean salad. FI's mom is making all of the cakes.

I am excited and terrified that we are 19 days out.

  • Hey!  That sounds like a wonderful place to get married.  I love old churches.  The engagement story was very funny indeed!
  • I am so jelly of your art history degree. I covet it. I spent a lot of college working for the Harry Ransom center at UT Austin and I wish I understood some of that stuff better.

I also love old churches and am worried about a back-up plan for weather (my mom's freaking out about it). Tell us more about you!

That's awesome that you got to work for the Harry Ransom center! UT Austin has a FANTASTIC Art History program. I believe it's #8 in the most recent top 100 Art History Programs list. I actually looked quite longingly at Austin when I was applying to grad programs... and then saw it ranked along with the Ivy's and thought "yeah... doubt I'll get in..." but I applied anyway.... and yeah, didn't get in.

FI believes there will be more opportunities for him career-wise in VA; and I do love VA and have family there. I still got into a decent school there so I'm not too bitter about Texas anymore. haha

I also believe everything happens for a reason... though that doesn't stop me from also analyzing everything to death anyways.

  • Art History! Before I got engaged I was actually planning to go to school for just that. :) It's on hold for the moment until we get married and FI's orders figured out. I've never come across anyone else that found the topic interesting lol.
