Cal---and anyone else who used/got discounts.

Cal, you've talked before about saving a good bit of money by getting some military discounts. I wanted to ask how you went about asking about them? I realize I may be overthinking this, but I'm doing most of my vendor contact either through e-mail or phone messages, and I wanted any sort of wording advice. I don't want to be too oblique about it, but I also don't want people to feel too put on the spot or think I'm trying to low-ball them. Did asking straight-out work for you, or was it more of them knowing through your that your FI was military and them offering? Suggestions welcome.

  • We asked with every vendor we have. Our caterer didn't want to give us one because she's already giving us a discount for something else but she did offer us to use it if we booked our RD with her too. It doesn't get any simpler than "Do you offer military discounts?"

  • Ditto Tyleet. Just ask right out if they offer discounts or not. I'm sure most vendors are familiar with people asking especially if you get married in a military town.
  • Ya, just ask straight out "do you offer military discounts?" Even the vendor on Etsy from whom I am getting Cam's ring is giving me a 10% discount! It never hurts to ask.

  • I usually would write in the email something like, "My fiance is a 2nd Lt in the Marines, so I wanted to ask if you happen to offer any discounts for military service?"

Pretty simple.  I got a discount from nearly everyone.  Seriously, saved thousands!

  • Thanks guys, I figured I was overthinking it. I'll give it a shot and hopefully save some money.
