Sunshine State! (and you will not believe what I walked into)

Hello from sunny Florida!
So I made it to the apartment for the first time yesterday evening. Oooh boy. The apartment is nice, the location is great for FI, and the maintenance people are lovely. And how do I know that, one might ask? Because when I walked in to the apartment after over 6 hours on the road with a car full of boxes, I was smacked in the face with a wall of un-cooled stale apartment air. So I went and fiddled with the thermostat, but the air just wouldn't turn on, I figured I'd deal with it in a minute so I went to put some food in the fridge, and no cold coming out of it and the flour in the freezer had grown several fuzzy friends. I then went to try to turn on the computer in the living room and-nothing. The lights were working, so I thought that all of the outlets in the living room and kitchen had blown out, along with the a/c.

I proceed to freak the eff out, a day of driving, heat, and little food finally breaking me until I find the maintenance number and call and leave a rather panicky message, also text FI to try to let him know what's up. The guy finally gets there and finds that the breakers to the living room, stove, fridge, and a/c had all been thrown. Not tripped, but deliberately turned off by a person. When I am told this, I begin laughing hysterically. I must mention here that FI has never had central air before he lived on base, and his parents also do not have a full-sized fridge or a working stove or running water in most of their house, so in the ways of using electrical things, he's a little raised by wolves. He's also super-paranoid about saving money by turning off electronics, and he read an article recently about how you need to make sure to use power strips and unplug things, so I know he just took it a little too far. And has no idea how long it takes to cool a second floor apartment back down to merely livable temperatures when it's been closed up for 2 weeks since he's away on training.

FI calls after all of this goes down. He tells me to turn the breakers back on, I tell him that it's already done, and then follow up with all I can say at that point-"Don't EVER DOOOO that again." Which pisses him off. I'm sure there's a nicer way to deal with all that, but at that point I was so hot, and so pissed, and had lost all my daylight for moving things up the stairs that I didn't really think on tact. We're fine now, but, Sweet Jesus Christ on a bike, who does that? And then doesn't warn the other person that they did it?

Also, the apartment was a total wreck. Some of it I expected, the inflatable furniture and the frat-boy-chic Pink Floyd naked ladies poster. Some of it I didn't. Trash on the counters and a bag left in the kitchen (which was AWESOME after two un-air conditioned weeks). Nothing put away, dirty clothes everywhere. I'm not going to get on his butt about it, but seriously dude, you've been living there for 4 weeks before you left for training and you're 24 years old. You can buy a laundry hamper and take the trash out. My grandmother has used the "he's a man, they don't notice things like that" argument, but he's grown enough to fly a plane, he should be old enough to handle basic things.

Anyway, it was stifling all night, which I found out this morning was because of low freon in the outside a/c unit, so now I've unpacked the car and am slowly cleaning it all up. Sorry for the rant, this was quite an intro to living together life, although he gets back soon and there will be discussions. Hope everyone is doing okay, I've been trying to catch up on posts.

I'm glad you are there safe. I can sympathize. When I moved to WA FI had signed for our house been there 2 days and then done a deployment for a red cross letter (so he left like on less then 12 hr notice). Our house was a mess. It wasnt furnished. The bed was in the closet (i'm not kidding in the closet) because we had no blinds and no curtains. There was also a pile of clothes in our master bedroom with no joke; bullets and an open pocket knife. I almost had a heart attack because our dog proceeded to smell him all over the house and specifically in the pile of clothes that i thought there would be some other dangerous item in. She jumped across the room and started rolling in his clothes and diging in them like looking for him.

There were also beer cans all over the house and FI refuses to drink beer out of cans (he's weird) so I was kinda wondering why there was a 24 back of crappy beer in the fridge with its missing cans in ever room of the house. And food & chip bag left opened on the counter. The next day after I locked myself and the dog in the closet I cleaned it all up. And his mom called and asked what I was doing I explained she laughed for like 10 minutes and was like I didn't teach him that don't clean it up what was he thinking. I told her I cleaned it all up so the dog wouldnt die.

I'm so sorry it is hard to want to be done and just go to sleep to walk into another world like that. it never fun after a long drive but I really dont think they do it intentionally. It is kind of funny in hind site and atleast your apartment people were helpful :) good news always

I'm with Sami on this..I found it hilarious :) Even though I know you probably didn't..maybe you guys will look back on this in a few months (or years) and laugh!
I'm sorry he put you through that, I don't know many guys that would do that, but I guess he didn't think about it. I'm glad you're safe and I hope it's cooling off for you so you can get settled in and be comfortable!

It's fine now. I'm headed back to Mississippi today to load up again and get a little more done. I am not, however, turning off electricity in the apartment when I leave. I already think it's funny, just because it's over and will, hopefully, never happen again. Plus, I made some executive decor decisions that do not involve anything from a Spencer's Gifts.

If it makes you feel any better, we're currently having a battle over where workout shoes are stored.  FI likes those 5-toe shoes, and boy do they STINK!  The whole house reeks of them!  So I make him keep them outside, and he whines that they'll get ruined. I offered to let him keep them in the shower of the guest bathroom WITH THE SHOWER CURTAIN CLOSED with the rest of his dirty workout clothes, but he didn't want them stinking up his workout clothes... uh, duh?  That's why I want them out of the house!

So I went out and bought ammonia and the shoes are currently soaking in an ammonia bath.  And I had to mop the floor to get up the stink!  Gross!  What's with boys?!

C- H is OBSESSED with those stupid shoes.  He has 3 pairs.. and he's always bugging me to get some and I'm like "gloves go on my hands, not on my feet". I hate them. He claims that his feet don't stink, but we shall see.

Oh gosh, Sami, I've never smelled something so bad in my whole life!  Literally just the small bit that rubbed off on the ground from where he had orginally placed them had to be scrubbed with Clorox Bleach to get the smell out!  Of TILE!  Seriously awful.  We're currently washing them in Arm & Hammer Fresh Scent Laundry Detergent after soaking in a bath of ammonia for an hour, along with an additional helping hand in the wash with a cup of ammonia and Fresh Scent Fabric Softener.  I don't care if it ruins the damn things if it just gets that awful smell out!

I have them and so doesn FI we love them!! throw them in the wash - I wash ours all the time. it wont hurt the shoes at all or wear them out and it will get rid of the smell if you do it regularly. I jsut put ours in with all our workout and hiking gear or camping stuff when we do that.
