In Case anyone was planning a Mexico Vacation...

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/mexico-drug-wars-49-headless-dismembered-bodies-found-130658096.html

I've been following the madness for a couple of years now, and although (for the most part) it's been contained between the Drug Cartels -- I can't imagine anyone traveling to Mexico for leisure with dismembered bodies just chilling every where.

  • Uhhh..........

Thanks but no thanks. Never wanted to go to Mexico, and the possibility of seeing dead humans on the side of the road like roadkill, I'll pass.

  • Ohmygod, that is so disgusting and sad. To be honest, I've never had any desire to go to Mexico anyway. I'm more of a European-vacation person. Hence why H and I will be honeymooning in Greece next year!

  • We went to Mexico (Riveria Maya) for our honeymoon and I didn't see anything like this.  It was a beautiful place with wonderful people.  We went on a couple of off resort trips and I never felt unsafe.  I loved every second I was there.  I would go back again in a heart beat.

Mexico is HUGE. The possibility of this happening is not very high at all, contrary to popular belief. Especially if you're going to a tourist-y part of Mexico.

It's pretty much the border towns and more remote areas of Mexico being affected by this, like where my family is from, and still lives.
  • Yeah, I've known for about 2 years that we can't go to Mexico or even on a cruise that goes through international waters around Mexico. That may just be AF, though. I'm sure that there are really nice resorts and stuff, and I'd probably like it, but we can't go. I just found out that if we want to visit our friends who live in a border town, FI has to get express permission to go.

I understand that Mexico is huge but the drug cartel corruptions goes all the way up and out. They basically run the entire country and I just can't support that. Yes Mexico is full of awesome law abiding people but even going to a tourist resort doesn't really help them. I mean the local Mexican news refuse to cover the stories because every journalist that did a story was beheaded. You may not SEE it but it's there even in the tourist towns.

I guess what I quoted really just rubbed me wrong. I get that it's everywhere, like I said, I have 20+ family members that live out there, so I hear about it weekly, and for years now. My own family members have actually SEEN this stuff go down. Thing is, although it's not the safest place to go, you're not going to find bodies all over the place, everywhere, everyday in Mexico, KWIM? For me, it's like saying don't go to CA because of all of the gang activity going on in Los Angeles. I wish I had a better example because that's no where near the level that Mexico is dealing with.

I don't blame people for not going, and I don't blame the Military for restricting/stopping service members from traveling there at all, but I personally do not see it as "If you go to Mexico, you're going to get killed."

I can see where you are coming from.

My perspective is not I'm going to see bodies if I go to Mexico, rather I won't go to Mexico because I don't want to directly or indirectly support or further the corruption of the Drug Cartels. That being said, if I had direct connections to any area of Mexico - like family like you do, then it would probably be different because most likely it would be okay.

I just know what its like to not be able to go somewhere because it's unsafe. For us it's easier to avoid those places even with family factors. H will never be able to visit his family in the Philippines. He was able to visit twice but even the last time (in jr high) it was getting questionable. Now that he is an officer in the US Military puts an even bigger target on his back.
