Can you

Give me some munchy food ideas?

FI's family will be arriving in Wednesday evening and I know most people aren't super hungry after a long drive but I wanted to have some foods that can be munched on as they arrive/hangout. Suggestions please?!

I'd like some homemade idea's rather than quick frozen fixes if that's not being too picky! Thanks!!

  • I love homemade chex mix. If you get a box of rice or corn chez there's the recipe. Also they sell packets of the seasoning

If it were me I would do easy things like cheese and crackers, and veggies with dip and/or hummus.  I make homemade stromboli for snacky things like that which is always a big hit.

ETA:  I meant to say that if you do stuff like cheese and crackers and veggies then you aren't slaving in the kitchen, and if they get there and are really hungry you could just throw it in the fridge and go somewhere or order takeout.

  • I was going to suggest fruit but I could really go for some grapes right now so that's probably just my taste buds talking.

  • Make pinwheels! I get large tortillas, lettuce, deli meats (I usually use shaved buffalo chicken), shrdeded asiago cheese, and a special cream cheese mix I made up.
For the cream cheese, I toast some garlic and red chili flakes in olive oil (generous amount, maybe about 1/4 total of the mixture) then add it all to the cream cheese. I then add garlic salt, pepper, and green olives (chopped) into the mix.

Once that's done, I spread the cream cheese mix on the tortilla, then cheese, lettuce, and meat. roll it tight and cut. They're a hit every time I make these, and super easy.

Also, if you can find English Coastal Cheddar (Trader Joe's caries it), I would add shredded that, too. Sooo yummy!
  • Binx-I love that site! I've also seen mini-Capreses where you de-seed a grape tomato and stuff it with a tiny mozzarella ball with half a leaf of basil around it, then drizzle with balsamic and olive oil.

  • I use a blog that is called Plain Chicken and she has some great things in there. Sausage balls are always good as are ham delights (which I could eat my body weight in). Oh yeah....Happy Wedding week! Enjoy every second and I can't wait to see photos!
  • I agree with beach- veggies, dip, hummus, pita squares. Maybe a 7 layer Mexican dip and chips?

SN- I love Trader Joes and miss it deeply. And no, I'm not being sarcastic. I really do love that store, hopefully they get one here soon!

  • Thanks Binx for the ideas/recipes!!
Thanks Beach for the recommendation too!

I'm wanting to do things that I can put in the fridge and I'm sure I'll look around online today. Sorry about posting and running too btw, things are busy here.
I definitely don't want to do anything that will spoil and I was going to try and have most of it made by Tuesday so I wouldn't be slaving in the kitchen - just making sure the house is clean. It's just nice having something to munch on that's homemade, I hate eating a ton of take out - especially after a day of driving where all you are really eating is drive thru and packaged foods.

  • Anytime I need munchie foods, I make buffalo chicken dip.  It goes like hot cakes.

  • Hanky pankies:  equal parts ground beef, ground sausage, and Velveeta.  Brown the sausage and beef; drain.  Add Velveeta and stir until melted.  Put on little toasts and throw into the oven until they brown up a little.  The mix can be made in advance and slapped cold onto the toasts and into the oven and they still turn out perfect.

I also made pepperoni bread the last time FI's parents were in town, and that went over pretty well.
  • Kellie - Those Hanky Pankies sound yummmmyy!

    CAB and Divine - Thanksss!!!

That sounds very similar to polish mistakes minus the different spices and the olive on top and I  put them on little rye bread.
