WWYD?

So BF and I dropped my rings off with the jeweler last Wed. so he could look at them and determine cost for making a band, etc. to go with my e-ring (for those who need backstory, I have one ring from a grandma I'm using as an e-ring and another from my other grandma that I want made into a band to go with the e-ring).The lady says I'm going to have to leave them so he can see them.  I was curious as to why I couldn't just schedule a meeting with him to talk to him, but let it go.  They said they'd have my rings by Friday.Called on Friday and they said "Oh, he's still working on it and will finish up this weekend and get you an estimate, he has to measure the stones to see if he can find a pre-made band to put them in because that'll be a cheaper option for you."  "Ok, I'm alright with cheaper, I'll come get them on Monday."Call on Monday and the guy hasn't come in yet to bring my rings to the store, but he should be coming in Tuesday, so they'll call as soon as he gets there.Called Tuesday at lunch while out with BF and the guy still hasn't shown up yet, but "he'll definitely be in this afternoon, so we'll call you."  BF and I start to get irritated.Called as I was leaving work yesterday because I hadn't heard from them, and "he never made it in, but usually when he doesn't make it in, he's here first thing in the morning the next day."  YARGH.Called this morning after our litigation meeting (around 10:45am) and he STILL hasn't come in, but the girl realizes I'm getting p!ssed and promises to call as soon as they come in, again. At this point I'm seriously thinking there's a chance this guy has run off with my rings and sold them.  I didn't want to leave them AT the store, much less have the store give them to their repair guy who does their custom work to take home.  I'm so livid right now I can barely see straight, so I figured I'd get some advice from others who aren't actually involved. How would you handle this situation?  They promised the rings back last Friday, they've now had them a week.  Would you write the BBB?  Give them until this Friday before getting angry?  Other options? Thanks, ladies.  I need your rational thoughts.

Btw, I'm not a total idiot.  The reason I left the rings in the first place is because 1) a friend vouched for the jeweler as being good, and 2) they had repaired my watch last month and it had been left and ready to go within 4 days, so I figured if all he needed to do was look at the rings to do an estimate, 2 days was normal.

I would have steam coming out of my ears like a tea kettle.  I would go to the jewelers today/tomorrow and if repair guy is not there ask whoever is working to get him on the phone asap.

I would say go in there in person and pretty much let them know that you're pissed off, and if you don't see your rings soon, you're gonna write to the BBB. Maybe that'll encourage the guy to actually show up. If he doesn't, then follow up with it and write to the BBB.

GO. TO. THE. STORE.Work up some tears, anything. Ask for whoever is in charge, the highest-up manager-type you can get. Explain how much those rings mean to you (it shouldn't need to be explained, but go ahead) and how terrifying it is to even have the thought cross your mind that their repair guy may have lost or stolen them. You shouldn't have to think about that, because they should have been back in your hands when it was promised, and the jeweler should have been more proactive about calling to update YOU if it would take longer than planned. This is important. DO NOT back down. And, I'd suggest looking for another jeweler.

ditto what everyone else saidI'd be in the store and talking to the highest person there and I wouldn't leave until they called the repair guy and told me exactly what was going on with the ringsgood luck darling and I hope this turns out well for you! I don't know what I'd do if I was in your position with those rings that mean so much to you

Oh no worries, I'm getting another jeweler.  And my uncle has offered to do the custom work for me himself.  He's not a jeweler (he makes dentures), but he has all the equipment and makes jewelry as a side-job.Lost or stolen is exactly what's going through my head, and it's killing me.  One of my grandmas is still alive, but the other is gone and that ring is all I have of hers (she had nine children and lord knows how many grandchildren, and not much stuff, so it all got split up and given out before the list got to me since I'm the youngest grandkid - the only reason I have the ring is because she had given it to my mom before she passed to give to me because she knew I liked emeralds). The whole situation swings me from raging mad to sitting in tears.  :(Thanks for the advice.  I'll give them until close of day at 5:30 and if I don't hear from them I'll go to the store tomorrow. If you are lurking and live in Statesboro (I know, small chance) and want the name of the jeweler so you can avoid them, email acrosthec @ live (dot) com.

I'd definitely go down there in person. Something similar happened to us while we were havinbg my e-ring custom made. My bf dropped off the loose stone, and they said they'd call with the wax mold in 1 week. 1, week went by, then 2 then 3. We called, they said he's busy it's wedding season etc...we were getting frustrated they called again and said oh in 3 days... and finally went down there, and lo and behold the wax mold was made but they had stored it in the back of the store since my BF did not want me to see the diamond and the clerk we were dealing with did not know this! Another clerk has to come in and help look for it, we were freaking out! All that to say, Im SURE your rings are in his hands, and he's not run off with them. Don't forget you've had one good experience personally with them, and also a friend has vouched for them. Go in person, and ask to speak to the manager or person highest on the fod chain and I'm sure, like us, your questions will be answered. Then maybe think about another store, but give them a chance to apologize (because they should!). Also it's only been one week, so in my experience that's not a lot of time for them to work out stuff on their end considering everyone and their sister is getting engaged these days. I hope this makes you feel a bit better...and look forward to what your rings will look like, it's exciting!

Go in and demand to speak with a supervisor.  Tell them you are paying for a service and this is unacceptable.  You are fully aware of the fact that they are giving you the run arouns and as someone who has trusted them with your valuables, not to mention making a financial investment with them, you want your things back immediately, IMMEDIATELY.  theres also the threat of reporting them to the better business bureau if the jeweler dude is sketchy and you feel like he needs to be investigated.  All you hvae to do is go in and tell them you are done with them and this is absurd treatment for a paying customer.  use your anger lol...ugh im angry for you!  how ridiculous i cant believe they are pulling this shiiit like a kid making up excuses for not having their homework. GL i have faith your rings are intact and you will get them back

I would go to the store, talk to the manger, and plant my little self in a seat until the rings were placed into my hand. If they say your rings aren't at the store then you can wait for them. I would demand to have them back immediately and definitely take my business elsewhere.I'm so sorry you are going through this. I hope it all works out!

Did you happen to get a receipt for some sort of proof that they hve the rings? I took a few pieces of jewelry to get re-set and had to leave then there for a while, but they gave me a receipt as proof that it was in their possession.BTW it is way cheaper to take the stone and put it into a pre-made setting.Good luck!
  • edited December 2011
No, I didn't get a receipt.  But I will never leave jewelry at a store again without one! Thanks for all your responses.  I really appreciate the faith.  I hope my rings are alright as well.Oh, and yes, I know it's much cheaper to put the stones in a pre-made band, but my uncle offered to do it for free, and has made jewelry for me before that turned out beautifully, so I trust that if I sketch out what I want, he can do it with no problem.  If I didn't have him, I'd be looking more into the pre-made bands.  Another reason I prefer custom over pre-made is that the emerald stones are slightly larger than the diamonds, so if they used a pre-made band they could only use the diamonds.Needless to say the lady on the phone told me all this information on Monday afternoon, and gave me an estimate of $1600 for a custom band to be made, so by then they'd done all the work I wanted them to do.  But I still don't have my rings back.

Definitely be proactive, I agree with the other posters that you should go in. If there is a problem, they should be willing to fix it. When my bf and I went to pick up my ring, one of the tiny stones was missing. The woman behind the counter was instantly on the phone, tracking down the man responsible, and we had the ring back, fixed, two business days after that. That is what good businesses should do, IMO.

Store manager just called me (I guess I scared the poor clerk over the phone...I'll be the first to admit that I got a little snippy with her). The guy has two more places he's looking to find me a pre-made band, and he'll be done tomorrow and I'll have my rings back.  So since she called ME instead of the other way around hopefully this means they realized how seriously worried and upset I was getting and I'll have my rings tomorrow.Thank you all again for the great advice, and if I don't have my rings back by tomorrow I will put it to good use, no worries.  ;)Thank you also for letting me vent and convincing me that I wasn't totally over-reacting.

Reporting them to the BBB is all well and good but I'd be calling the police tomorrow and filing a report that your rings were stolen while you're still in the store if the problem isn't rectified to your satisfaction.

If you don't have those rings in the palm of your hand by Friday, you call the BBB. ASAP. And you march yourself into that store and don't leave until you have your rings back. Please tell me you're taking your jewelry elsewhere to have it done...the customer service at this places sounds horrendous.

I got my rings back this afternoon during lunch!  The people were really apologetic about the wait, and the guy had even cleaned them for me so they're super sparkly, but I still think I'm going to take my business elsewhere from now on just to avoid another incident.  I'm just happy to have them back.
