I have my BS and MS in marine biology, and I'm working on my Ph.D. at the moment. I've done a pretty wide variety of research areas (freshwater ecology, sharks, corals, etc.), but I always end up coming back to (and am strongest in) sharks and their relatives. My BF's specialty is also sharks and rays, so we definitely have a lot to talk about at the dinner table.I was lucky enough to help out with several shark tag-and-release studies through Mote Marine Laboratory a few years ago, and I did my masters thesis on sawfish population dynamics in N. America. I have to admit...when it comes to my career, I'll never be rich, but I'll love going to work every morning.

That is fantastic! I got a B.S. and M.S in animal and poultry sciences, but was sucked into marine biology when I got into the Caribbean vet program. My research was in loggerhead sea turtle growth curves, flipper tagging, and A LOT of extension work.  Since I will most likely not be going back to that particular vet school because of the loan crises, I am looking into fish medicine at other universities.  I do love sharks and rays...BF and I are trying to go to all of the aquariums on the east coast and Hotlanta's four whale sharks are incredible.

Sea turtles...if you ever get back into that field of study, shoot me a message, I have quite a few fellow grad students I could put you in contact with who are doing similar work.ps. I'm super jealous that you've seen the whale sharks. I've been dying to go up to ATL to see the new aquarium. The great hammerhead there, we rehabbed her at MML before she want to ATL. Feeding her every day was part of my job duties....and so much FUN!

sapphire - lol, my mom's the same way. Thankfully, she's pretty understanding about my line of work. I figure as long as I come back with all my fingers and toes, she's a happy mom.

Oceana - I now officially hate you. Ok - maybe not hate, but there's some serious jealously going on right now. I wanted to go into marine bio and work with sharks ever since I was in elementary school.  I decided not to once I found out that only about 10% of biologists ever really see field work and I didn't want to be stuck in labs (yuck!) or teaching.  Anyway - I'm facinated.

Don't hate me, tide...I luuuuuurve you ;)Yeah, unfortunately that 10% thing is pretty accurate. You spend a lot of time either a) in a research lab, or b) teaching. Not looking forward to either of those elements of the job, but I have so much fun working in the field, it kind of takes away some of the sting of the boring part of the job.
