Book recs please

Mermad - I just finished Gargoyle and I loved it.  Would love to chat about it if you are around sometime.  Took me a while to get into it because it started out so gory but when it got going I was hooked. So any more recommendations ladies?  Can't be too new or obscure as I get all my books from the library.  TIA.

I like a lot of stuff.  Not so much fantasy but if it's more mainstream then maybe I'd be into it.  Favorite author is John Irving.  More recent good books are The 19th Wife and anything by Jodi Piccault.

Ok the one I can think of that I've read that's more mainstream is called Running With the Demon by Terry Brooks - I read it in high school and it takes place in present time

I highly recommend George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series.  Though technically 'fantasty' since there are some mythical creatures in a few spots, overall it is more like a mind blowing medieval political soap opera.   The first one is Game of Thrones and I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Water For Elephants! did i tell you that one last time? right now i'm reading The Girls from Ames, it is a true story about 11 girls that grew up together in Iowa and are now in their 40's, it's really cute and heartwarming. If you want a light read, I just read Vision in White while on vacation, it's about a wedding planning co.mpany run by friends and one of the girls falls in love. Also one of my old favorites if you like Nicholas Sparks (which I'm guessing you might since you love JP) is Three Weeks with my Brother, which is his memoir but my fave book by him. :)

I have a love/hate thing going on with Nicholas Sparks but maybe I will check out that one, I've read about it.

Jodi Picoult is my favourite author! I love her books so much (except Perfect Match, I didn't care for that one). My Sister's Keeper is my favourite (even before the movie came out), but I also liked Nineteen Minutes a lot. Right now, I'm re-reading Go Ask Alice. I read it years ago, and when I moved, my sister packed it up for me because she knew I liked it, and I didn't even know. So I thought I'd give it another read. As somewhat juvenile as that book may be (we're talking massive font here), I really like it. Heavier than Heaven, the Kurt Cobain biography (by Charles Cross, I think), is also a favourite book of mine. Of course, if you don't care about Kurt Cobain, don't bother reading it, but I found it amazingly interesting.
He pretty much had me at "hello".

I second Water for Elephants! SOOO good. I love books that manage to have a romantic but not trite storyline. Like Time Traveler's Wife. That's one of my favorites, but I think I remember from an earlier post that most of y'all have read that one already. If anyone is willing to give fantasy a try, I ADORED Name of the Wind by Rothfuss. Alas, it's supposed to be a trilogy and we've been waiting for book 2 for like 3 years or something. But Brent Weeks' Shadows trilogy is complete and awesome! For mystery, I love Barbara Cleverly's Joe Sandilands series, starting with The Last Kashmiri Rose.I'm a huge book nerd, always looking for something good, so keep those recommendations coming!Anyone read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or the Weight of Silence?

Oh good...fellow book lovers! I LOVE to read! I'm sure with all the hype the last few years with Dan Brown you've heard about (and may have read) some of his books...but if not, they're AWESOME!! Angels&Demons and Digital Fortress are my two faves. I can't wait for his new one to come out!

Have read DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons and liked both.  Am not really in the mood for a thriller right now but I like FI has a copy of Digital Fortress at home I can check out. Just picked up Bel Canto.  Anyone read that?

I third "Water for Elephants"! Great book! I also fell in love with "The Time Traveler's Wife" (way before the movie came out). Also, the Kite Runner is gutwrenching to read, but a powerful book. "Three Cups of Tea" was another favorite.

I fourth Water For Elephants.  Very good book! I know you said you aren't into fantasy, but have you read anything by Gregory Maguire (Wicked, etc.)? He takes fairytales and puts a twist on them... making them more realistic and less "puppies! rainbows! happiness!".

Yeah, the "cinderella" one was interesting.  I just bought his most recent book about the cowardly lion... it's the third in the wicked series, and I can't wait to get to it.

I started Wicked and then my mom borrowed it and never gave it back.  Think I have to go get it from her because everyone I've talked has loved it (even guys!).

Oh NQB! I'm SO glad you liked The Gargoyle. It has such a tragically funny voice. So unique. I loved Bel Canto. I'm pretty sure I told you to read that 4 years ago. If I come across something spectacular, you'll be the second one to know:)

I'd have to second Malakia on the George R.R. Martin books! I'm finishing up Game of Thrones right now and I'm very into it. BF encouraged me to start reading them since he got hooked. Like she said, it's technically "fantasy" but I'd describe it more a historical fiction book that never really happened. There are several books in the series and another coming out sometime...(its a couple years late). They're in the process of casting and all the pilot for an HBO series of the book too, which looks like it's gonna be great.

I recommend "Possession" by A.S. Byatt. It is the most beautifully written work of literature that I have read. Also, I'm currently reading "Pride & Prejudice & Zombies" by Jane Austin and Seth Grahame Smith - so funny, if you have read the original (or seen the movie) I really recommend it.

yes! Possession is A-MAY-ZING! Although I think you do need to be a bit of a literature and/or history nerd to really love it.Also, if you like kind of creepy/twisted fairy tales, try The Book of Lost Things by Connelly.Yay, books!

Currently hooked on the Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire Mysteries series by Charlaine Harris. Books that True Blood is based off. They're pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. And True Blood deviates enough from the books that you don't feel like you're going to know what is going to happen before it does.
