To me it kind of looks like engraved/ etched metal. Either way, I wouldn't pay $200 for it either. Maybe its made up of a ton of tiny diamonds.

I loooove that ring.  I know someone who has it as her engagement ring, actually.  It's beautiful in person, too.  But I wouldn't pay upwards of $800 for it.

I bought my sister this for her high school graduation: http://www.tiffany.com/Shopping/Item.aspx?fromGrid=1&sku=GRP02470&mcat=148204&cid=287465&search_params=s+5-p+2-c+287465-r+101323338+101424819-x+-n+6-ri+-ni+0-t+

She loves the necklace, so in that sense it was worth it. But my bank account didn't appreciate it, that's for sure, even though it's one of their "affordable" pieces. When shopping for myself, I don't think I've ever spent more than $40 on a piece of jewelry!

Nope, that's what it looks like, Leia.

From the other photos, it seems like it's bendable, so I'm thinking it probably is clothesline. haha

I actually thought it was lanyard for a minute. My friends and I chipped in for a Tiffany's bracelet for another friend's 18th birthday. The bracelet was like $230 and it could have been bought at any other jewelry store for a fraction of the price.

I do love Tiffany blue, though.

Their engagement rings are anywhere from 30% to 50% overpriced too.

You are paying for the name Tiffany - the quality does not justify how overpriced they are. You can get an equal quality ring for much less at a local jeweler. I highly doubt that anyone immediately recognizes that a setting is from Tiffany just by looking at it.

Please justify the brand recognition in a way that is not shallow and/or materialistic.  Because as Sapphire said the quality and style are not unrivaled by other jewelers.  The only "unique" things they bring to the table are a colorful box and a Tiffany stamp.

That said, I do own jewelry from Tiffany and Co..  I don't care where something is from - if I like it and can afford it, I'll get it.

i'm not saying it's not shallow...lol.... it's definitely shallow.  but so is a lot of what we do.

but yes, some people absolutely recognize a tiffany setting at first glance.  without a doubt.

Um, not likely - one solitaire looks exactly like another. There is no real way to tell if it's a tiffany or not unless you take it off and look at the engraving in the band.

I'm just going to go ahead and make an unpopular statement, I'm being a terrible person today anyway. In my opinion, nothing that comes from a chain store (which is what tiffany's is) is unique or one of a kind. Tiffany's does not grow diamonds, thus they must source them from the same place as every other Tom, Diick and Harry. So, if I have a flawless 1ct diamond in a custom built band that look EXACTLY like a 1ct flawless diamond in a Tiffany ring, mine would be 1) More unique and 2) Less expensive.

For the record, I have a very nice diamond in what is a total knock of a Tacori design. People assume he spent 12k on it, he did not.

lol... wow people here take things really seriously!

i've been in meetings where one colleague has seen someone else's ring and say "i love that tiffany design!"

i've also be out with friends and seen one recognize another person's ring.  of course no one recognizes the diamond, it's the setting that is what people recognize.

and i agree that if you get a ring from a chain, you're not getting anything unique.  some people don't want unique.

as for being shallow, i'm happy to admit that sometimes i'm shallow.  i'm comfortable with that.  if i wasn't shallow i'd buy everything at the second hand shop and i would never buy anything brand name.

*snerk* The things people will buy to own something from Tiffany's.  I'm going to have to agree with noelle and Paige on this one. You're not just paying for the jewelry, you're paying for that copyrighted blue box.

Tiffany rings are fug. Seriously. I like the Tiffany Novo the best, but that style is very imitable and not exclusive to Tiffany's.
  • edited December 2011
There are actual several settings that are exactly like "tiffany" settings.  No one can recognize it.  If someone says "i love that tiffany setting" then they are probably just describing the type of setting, not necessarily exactly where it comes from.
