Keep Engagement Secret - For Awhile?

I think that if there are good reasons (i.e. fiance has been unemployed, is looking for work, and wants to have a job secured when s/he asks parents' permission), I think it is okay and a good start to the marriage, having another marker that the relationship is based on respect.  Just my two cents; in this economy, I know a couple people who are doing this.  I think it increases their feelings of self-worth, knowing they have a way to help support their new spouse before announcing, especially if one of the first questions that will be asked is, 'How do you plan to support my son/daughter as your spouse if you are unemployed?'
