garter tradition

Re: garter tradition

I think the tradition is a bit cheesy, but FI and I haven't yet discussed whether we'll do the garter or bouquet toss. If he's cool with it, I'd prefer to just eliminate both from our reception.

Calindi, I love your plan to have the couples on the dancefloor slowly eliminated by length of marriage and then have the final couple receive the bouquet and a bottle of wine.

I think that NEY people over thinking a wedding tradition is obnoxious.
@shoes- For what its worth I appreciate that you do speak your mind unflitered - it's a breath of fresh air - but thats just me. I know we had this disussion a few months back so won't go into the whole thing over again - but I kind of like the tradition and ideas behind it. This is because my relationship dynamic may differ from some - maybe it's just because nothing in my life , wedding or anything is really normal. It is completely a personal choice - and if it is done I don't think it has to be in a vulgar way - it can still be fun and incorporated into your style if its what you both want - if not hey that's fine too ;) And nowhere does it say you can't just wear a garter for your husband because you want to :)
    Posted by tafft1
tafft1-  would you mind providing a link or a short synopsis on why you like the tradition?  i'm curious to know a different point of view.

and i do plan on wearing a garter for FI...  but he won't know that until much later.  :)

Well, shite. Let me book my back alley, because I'm having a garter toss and I'm loving it. I figure it's the only logical way I can fit the theme song to True Blood into my wedding.

I'm sorry, call me un-feminist or trashy or whatever you want, but it's a silly tradition. It's not meant to be anything but that. Same as the bouquet toss. If that means I'm objectified, oh well. If people don't like it, that's what the open bar is for.

You would think we were determining the economic fate of third world nations in this thread, for Pete's sake.

ps. Is there really a debate over who is being more obnoxious? Can't you guys, like, share the Obnoxious Tiara?

I agree that people are obnoxious.

Also, "My dumpster comment was an emphasis that if you're going to incorporate trashy elements into your wedding, it's a slippery slope."

Slippery slope is a logical FALLACY, not an argument.

    Also.

I am so freaking trashy, I don't even know what to do with myself!

The garter toss was silly and fun. We played "Another One Bites The Dust." I put the garter on just above my knee, and only a few minutes before the toss. It was a purple Transformers garter, which my husband got a KICK out of.

I have never in my life heard of the tradition of whoever catches the garter puts it on the girl who caught the bouquet. We didn't do anything at all like that. We took a photo of me with the little girl that caught the bouquet, and a photo of Josh with the guy who caught the garter.

Whether or not it's trashy depends on the people involved, not the tradition itself.

Also, if it's something that bothers you, don't do it. There's no reason to feel uncomfortable and objectified on any day of the week, let alone your wedding day. Just say "I'd rather not hike up my skirt, kthx."

Then let the rest of us trashy chickens have our trashy, chauvenistic rituals.

How else was I going to show off my purple undergarments, anyway?

We had a garter toss and bouquet toss. We did not have the garter catcher place the garter on the bouquet catcher's leg. However, my douchbag cousin (aka garter catcher) did place the garter on HIS head. B\c it's not creepy that it's been on my leg all night and now it's on your head and we are related. We hadn't planned to have tosses or not, but we had many friends that asked about it, so there you go.

I find Cate and Shoes equally obnoxious, but I don't have any issue with that. I think you are too similar and get on each other's nerves. *shrugs*

Most weddings I've been to, that has been the tradition, so long as both parties were okay with it, and it was appropriate. Like, my MOH had explicitly told the DJ that if one of her two younger sisters, or her grandmother, caught the bouquet, they weren't doing garter placement. Grandma caught the bouquet, so they took a picture instead.

I wasn't going to do the placement, but I've had some friends specifically request it. I'm telling the DJ that we're playing that by ear, depending on who catches each piece.
