Finally broke down and bought this

It's a stupid toilet paper cover to stop my cats from shredding the entire roll several times a day. I can't even tell you how many rolls have been wasted in the past week. I'm so angry. I spent $60 on this stupid thing ($71 total with shipping). I'm not even quite sure how it'll fasten to the wall or side of the cabinet where the current holder is.

I had been researching the past few days for a less expensive option, but didn't find much that could work. Most of the covers still exposed some of the toilet paper, which is just an open invitation to make my life a living hell every morning. I don't like the idea of having to keep my bathroom door shut, either.

Someone tell me why I wanted cats in the first place? Because I'm an idiot who thought they'd be good pets and not destroy everything their claws can sink into?  I'm so annoyed right now.

--End rant-- (although, I'm still sitting here sulking to myself). sigh.

    This is hysterical.

I'm sorry.  I'm lucky, my cats don't touch the toilet paper.

  • This is why dogs > cats.

haha. I figured others would find it funny. BF thinks it's funny too, because he's not the one cleaning up. I'm not sure which cat is the culprit; I have a feeling it's the both of them partying while I'm gone and/or sleeping. They each have their own bad habits as well. Murphy climbs screens and has already put holes in two of them at our new place. Dexter opens the garbage and pulls things out. This morning I was picking up pieces of an empty bread bag.

I had cats growing up and don't ever remember them being this naughty. Maybe it was cause I was a kid and my mom was the one to deal with them. I really hope they grow out of this, because if it continues, I'll need blood pressure meds before I'm 30.

Yeah, at least with dogs you have a better chance of them listening to you. Cats have this attitude of "I'll do what I want, when I want and you can't stop me". grr.

I'm so envious of you and rdr for not having to deal with this monstrous headache. It's the worst! Imagine waking up with a trail of toilet paper through your house. Not only is there a trail, but because it takes them a bit to get the roll going, there's also shreds of paper all over the bathroom. Then imagine needing to actually use the toilet paper and having to unravel a ton of it, due to all the holes in the sheets. I'm going to go insane. I really, really hope this thing works.

This thought crosses my mind almost daily. They are so, so naughty and sadly I'd say they are my biggest source of stress. I don't get it either. They have a climbing tower w/ a scratching post and enough toys that I could probably open my own cat toy resale shop. It's nuts.

[QUOTE]That looks like a good little device, but it stinks it was pretty pricey. Tucker doesn't really get into anything except eating the plants, which is obnoxious (but we of course make sure we don't keep anything around that is poisonous).

I'm definitely not thrilled with the price. I was worried that if I bought any of the other things I'd seen that I'd just be wasting my money and in the long run spending even MORE than this. I don't have any plants, but the couple of times I had flowers, they didn't live to see more than three days. Petals everywhere.

Your cat(s) could open the fridge?! I thought getting into the cupboards was bad. I have also considered latches for the cupboards, but whenever I'm at someone's house that has them for their kids, I have troubles opening them. Adult proof just as much as they are kid and pet proof!

hahah! Those pictures are awesome. Soo much funnier when it's happening to someone else. My cats are good about doing their business where they're supposed to. Though, I just had to buy new high-sided litter boxes since they were missing sometimes and their presents ended up on the floor. Seems to have solved that problem.

  • My cat destroys toilet paper too! I actually ended up just storing my TP in a tube I made out of old coffee cans. I took 3 large coffee cans, cut the bottom out of 2 of them filed the inside to take away most of the rough edges, glued them together to form a tube, put some caulking around the inside of the seams to cover any sharp edges I didn't get off, then covered it with mac-tac or whatever the stuff is called. Then I use the plasic lid from the one can to cover it with. It looks cute and I can store 4 rolls in it! Or at least that's what I did in my apartment and  the litterbox was in the bathroom. Now we just keep the bathroom doors shut....

  • Sorry, Melmac! I've never had a cat who liked to play with TP.

Just a thought, because I've been watching a bit of "My Cat from Hell" on Animal Planet. Do your cats have enough scratching posts (vertical and horizontal) and toys? A lot of cat mischief happens because the cat is bored and shredding toilet paper is fun.
  • They have their cat climbing tower (this exact one):

They also have several windows to look out of. I have toys, too. What's a horizontal post? Like a window perch?

Maybe I need to check into some different toys. As much as they annoy me, they are pretty spoiled. I buy new toys all the time. I also bought pet grass, but they didn't seem to like that.

  • Awww...I'm sorry. I did have a little laugh at your expense, though. My kittens are still confined to the guest room when we're not around, but they have totally destroyed the bedspread in there by scratching it...lucky it was cheap. We already keep the bathroom doors shut because the dog is an asshole and eats the trash, so hopefully we're safe from toilet paper shredding. PS. I wanted to thank you for the LitterLocker recommendation! We just got it from amazon, and it's awesome so far.

  • Luckily, my cat isn't a destroyer of anything, she's just a stubborn AW.  We had to buy her a water fountain, because she will NOT drink from non-flowing water...unless it's the toilet.  Otherwise, she jumps on the sink anytime you are there to try to sneak in and get some water while you are washing your hands.  Which she still does even with her fountain, but at least she'll drink from it at other times of the day.  We're on her second fountain now too because the hard water we have at our house calcified the motor in her first one...so that's $90 between the two of them so far.  It's an expensive quirk.

She's still pretty awesome though.  H and I joke that she's the best $50 we've ever spent (her adoption fee).  She provides us hours of entertainment and cuddling, so it's worth it.  Plus we stopped spending money on toys for her, since her favorite things to play with is an old stick with a string on it (she plays fetch) and balls of aluminum foil...

Luckily, our cats have never scratched furniture or carpet. I don't think they'd scratch our bedding either, but we mostly keep our bedroom door closed, because I don't want their fur all over my pillows/blankets. I get the darn garbage thing. Like I said earlier - Dexter knows how to get in the kitchen garbage. Last night it was tipped over. When they are being so naughty, I remind them that I rescued them from the shelter and they better be nicer to me :)

I'm glad you like the LitterLocker! It's still working well in our house. Makes that terrible chore so much easier and it continues to keep the odor trapped inside. The replacement cartridges are a bit more expensive than I originally thought, but totally worth it.
