NOT the only one. After dating for 8 years and ring shopping 3 times in the last month or two I was looking to buy a vintage party dress and came across a wedding dress I LOVE on ebay. Asked my BF what he thought- showed him the dress and he said buy it. Haha soooo...as creepy as it sounds, I have a wedding dress sitting in my closet and no ring. I figure if I decide later I don't want it I'll sell it. I'm going to be even more creepy and post a picture right now. But really...I'm the extreme but I know LOTS of girls in relationships or who have friends getting married who end up browsing as well.

I have heard of the MRS degree throughout my studies, but I've never heard of the ring ceremonies or the "ring before spring" concept. I'm somehow not surprised, some women really seem to think that their main purpose in life is to become someone's wife. Though I'm sure the Marriage Obsession Level varies from state to state, and within individual social circles.

That is a very pretty dress! Though I have to say that browsing and buying are two different things. I don't see anything wrong with browsing, buy I personally would not buy a dress too far in advance of any important event. This is because I know I have the tendency to change my mind quite often when it comes to such things.

Thanks! I felt SOOOO weird buying it but we know were getting married in August 2011 (proposal is kind of a formality) and I ran it by my BF like everyday to make sure it didn't freak him out. He just kept saying he thought it was beautiful and that I'd be beautiful in it. It's exactly my style and he was excited that I found something that fit me perfectly!
I DO think it's funny that some girls are knocking on the fact that you are looking at dresses when they are also on ummm... theknot.com.

Also- Idaho is not nearly as bad as Utah! So many girls go to school here just for the MRS and many of the people I'm in classes with meet a return mormon missionary in class, start dating and get engaged before the semester is over. Of course, the weddding is right after the semester (yeah- like 3 mos) and the girl doesnt return to school. Yikes!

Oh, believe me- I felt sooo creepy doing it. It would be different if we didn't already know we were doing it in August 2011 after he finishes school (I'm already finished). We're just kind of doing the actual "proposal" and ring part of it so in 20 years we don't regret not doing it- plus, its fun! Haha I'm the most rational person I know and still cannot believe I bought it. Haha.

Well, I'm not about to "knock on" anything since I don't really know enough about your situation... but I'd be crazy nervous about buying a dress 16 months in advance.

Meh- date is set, body hasn't changed sizes in at least 5 years, not getting preggers cause I physically can't and I figure worst case scenario I sell it. Haha I realize I seem like a crazy person on here. I promise- I'm not nuts.

musikbx- Love your siggy!  XKCD ftw!

What are these ring ceremonies?  And what exactly does "ring before spring" mean?  Just, if you start dating in winter you'll be engaged before spring because your man wants non-virgin level sexy times?

<div>Not sure if I believe you or not on that one.  Looking before engaged is one thing...buying is a whole other thing.  I'm getting married in Sept 2011 and I'm not even CONSIDERING going dress shopping until this fall.  If it ends up working that's great but guess what - buying a dress before getting engaged is silly.  Period.</div>

The "ring before spring" concept at my school is actually "ring before spring or your money back."  And it refers to the senior spring semester, and the ring is an engagement ring, not a wedding ring.
