Going dress shopping

I just made my 1st appointment at the bridal salon for Saturday the 18th.  I'm so glad I had been writing down style numbers from their website that I liked and had already gone back through and noted my top choices.  They're going to make sure they have those 4 dresses waiting for me to try on - in my size - and said I can certainly try on as many as I'd like if those 4 don't work out.

So exciting - now that I'm going to get a dress, I'm really starting to feel like a bride. Smile

They said I can take pictures, so my mom is planning to bring her camera and one of my BM's has her camera phone and will be texting the pictures to my FSIL and 2 BM's who can't be there that day.

Hooray!! I can't wait to see pics!

    Have fun!

My bit of advice is to do your hair or makeup a little bit before you go. : ) It's easier to picture a finished look and feel better about how things look in general if you don't look like you rolled out of bed.

Have fun! My advice is bring a bottle of water. Trying on lots of dresses is actually quite a workout, those dresses can be heavy!

I agree with the bottle of water and the makeup/hair.

Also- try on ANYTHING. Try on things you didn't even think of, or things you think look bad on the hanger.

The dress I ended up buying was the plain-jane one in my dressing room. I almost didn't even bother. Not a bead, not a bit of lace, not a button. But it fit ME perfectly. So don't knock anything until you try it!

    And have FUN! :)

Thanks for all the advice everyone.  Two of my top choices are pretty plain, which is probably why they're at the top of my list.  I have a feeling I will try on more than just those 4.

I know this is likely a given but wear the right underwear and bra for a dress, for a salesperson to see frequently and, most important, that make you feel good.

That's too funny - my mom actually bought me a brand-new bra to wear that day.  Although I keep joking and saying I'm going to be one of those crazy girls you see wearing a black bra and pink polka dot underwear to try on white wedding dresses.

I wish I'd bought a strapless long-line bra BEFORE dress shopping. It just would have been easier to already be IN the bra. I have a really hard time snapping the back all by myself, and I felt bad asking the consultants to help me with the bras.

That's so exciting Angie! and it's great that they are so accomodating for you, you don't necessarily find that as often anymore...

Good luck and I'm sure you will look beautiful!

Just an odd question... what do girls wear for bras who aren't sure what kind of neckline they'd want?  I've sort of hypothesized about a very low back since BF always comments on how sexy he finds my back.  That would make any normal bra unusable.  Would I just wear those stick on cups or something?  Would that freak out a dress consultant?

Obviously hypothetical, just curious what kind of bra would be the right kind to buy when you don't even know what dress you want yet?

I'm not nervous at all - the store I'm going to sells off the floor and can get a dress from another store or their warehouse within 2-4 weeks usually, so it shouldn't be a problem.  I called them as soon as I got engaged to ask those questions and when I heard the answers, I decided to wait until it was a little cooler here.<img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />

Calindi - the store I'm going to is all modest with shoulders and sleeves, so my everyday bra should work for me.  I went to one dress shop with a friend in college and that shop had a bra she could use while she was trying on dresses, so maybe the shops still do that?

Cate-- Cart before horse. I would wear a normal bra, it will be most true to what you look like in one of those weird ones.

Angie-- Have fun!! It's about dang time for some dress porn. And we need pics!

    Cate and anyone else curious:

Most bridal gown shops have bras that you can use. They are called long-line bras. They're strapless and the back dips pretty low. If you're considering a backless dress then you should just use your regular bra or use the ones the stores let you use.

However, if you know you just need a strapless bra with a low back, it would be fine to buy a long-line bra ahead of time. I've used mine even after the wedding.
