Not Engaged Yet

Actually wearing the ring

I am going to confess to you guys that I've been feeling like an overprotective new mother with my ring. I wore it constantly for about a week, and now I'm almost afraid to take it out of the box. I wanted to know what you think.

Do/Would you wear your ring....

1) To do dishes?

2) In the shower?

3) To wash your hands?

4) While you're sleeping?

5) At work?

6) At the gym?

8) At the beach or in the pool?

9) When you're traveling?

10) Anywhere else I may have forgot?

I have a promise ring and I never take it off except for when I give massages at my school. Ring scratches across someones face isn't very pretty.

I lose things constantly so I never take my ring off because I'm so afraid of losing it.

I have never owned a ring.  I will probably be too scared to wear an engagement ring for fear of ruining it in some weird way.
  • edited December 2011
I wear my ring at all times.  I will only take it off in pools or at the beach.  And with good reason...

I once was on a cruise with a couple that got engaged on the boat.  While on an excursion, her ring slid off her finger in the water and they spent 3 hours looking for her ring in the sand.  Luckily, they found it, but really, that was a miracle.

I know I seem like a spazz, I want to explain further, but I thought it best to do in another post.

I think it started because I am afraid to wear my ring to work. I work at a school that is kindof a "last stop" for troubled kids. I personally have never had anything stolen, but a number of my colleagues have. I guess what I'm not as comfortable with is the methadone clinic that I have to walk past to get to my school. Anyways, long story short, no ring at work.

The thing is, at that point it feels silly to put it on just to go to the grocery store, or to do the dishes. Not to mention the fact that I'm afraid of getting it dirty/scratched.  I'm also afraid that I'll just drop it, or something stupid like that. Lately, I've only been putting it on for special events (a nice dinner, a play or concert, things of the sort.)

Also, I know this is a weird time to post a poll... but I can't knot at school, so I am never around for the daytime fun ;)

    Do/Would you wear your ring....

    1) To do dishes?
NO. I used to wear my ring wherever, whenever, and then I developed this really red, sore ring around where my e-ring would sit. I work with some pretty nasty chemicals in the lab, and I had been working with acids the day it first appeared, so I assumed it was a chemical burn. Turns out it was contact dermatitis from getting water/soap stuck between my ring and my skin. It took almost two months to heal up. Now, I'm super consciencous about taking my ring off when I get my hands wet, and completely drying my finger and the inside of my ring before I put it back on.

    2) In the shower?
    See #1.

    3) To wash your hands?
    See #1.

    4) While you're sleeping?
No. I toss and turn a lot, so there's a good possibility I'd gouge FI's eye out. Or the dog's.

    5) At work?

Unless I'm having problems with my skin, I always wear it to work when I'm in the office. I never wear it to the lab - I work with stuff that could damage it if it got past the latex gloves.

    6) At the gym?
I work out mostly at home, after dinner, so my ring is usually off already (from cooking dinner). If I go straight to the gym from work, then I'll wear it.

    8) At the beach or in the pool?
FI and I are both planning to get plain titanium bands for when we're diving or working in the field, but I won't wear my e-ring under those conditions.

    9) When you're traveling?
Unless I'm going somewhere where I know my ring will be off pretty often (dive trips, field research), I wear my ring when I travel.

    1) Ummm. Yes. I think so. I definitely wear it to load the dishwasher. ;)
    2) Yes. I used to take it off, but my sister told me not to and i think it's helping it keep its sparkle.
    3) No, I take it off to wash my hands (I don't know why that's different than the shower thing, but it's different in my mind)
    4) Yes.
    5) Yes.
    6) Yes.
    7) WTF HAPPENED TO SEVEN?!
    8) No, definitely not. The chlorine can damage it and there is no way I would risk it coming off in the ocean.
    9) I haven't really travelled with it on, but I probably would. I might turn it around if I'm going out through somewhere sketchy or riding on the metro.

I keep my ring on doing most things. I take if off when I put on lotion so it doesn't get gobby. I wear powder makeup now, but when I wore the wet kind I would take it off then too.

Oh, I had a problem with the contact dermatitis that Oceana was talking about (I think that's why I take it off when I wash my hands) with a silver ring that I had. Along with red and peely, it smelled pretty bad too. I haven't had a problem with my e-ring yet so either I'm allergic to silver or it was just a problem with the width and fit of my other ring. My e-ring band is pretty thin and loose, so air can get underneath it.

    Oceana and Narwhal,

That really sucks. So is it because of the ring itself, or the stuff that gets underneath it?

    image
  • edited December 2011
It's probably the stuff that gets underneath it. Like if soap gets trapped under there it can cause a sort of burn underneath it when the ring keeps rubbing against it.

    Do/Would you wear your ring....

    1) To do dishes?
If I'm just loading the dishwasher, yes, if I'm washing dishes that can't go in the dishwasher, then it definitely comes off.

    2) In the shower?
I always take it off when I take a shower - I have really long, thick hair and my ring stands up pretty high, I constantly get it caught in my hair when it's dry, wet it worse, plus it gets pretty loose, so I'm afraid it would slip off (side note: FI hates it when I don't put my ring back on as soon as I get out of the shower - I usually wait until after I dry my hair for the same reason, don't want to catch it, but he'll see it sitting in the box and will bring it to me where ever I am in the house).

    3) To wash your hands?
Depends on my mood, I guess, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't

    4) While you're sleeping?
Yes...before I had it sized (5 months after we got engaged) it was really uncomfortable to sleep in 'cause it was always slipping around; now that it fits better, it's much more comfy.

    5) At work?
Don't work right now, but I know I would wear it to work for sure when I do get a job.

    6) At the gym?
    Don't go to the gym

    8) At the beach or in the pool?
Haven't been to either since we got engaged, but see above about shower and getting really loose, so I'd say no

    9) When you're traveling?
The closest thing I can call travelling that we've done since we got engaged was go 3 hours one way to Zion and spent the day on the "easy" hikes - that was before I got it sized and I wore it then

    10) Anywhere else I may have forgot?
I always take my ring off when I'm preparing raw meat or anything else messy.  Also, when we moved FI into my place a couple months ago, I ended up taking my ring off and putting it in my pocket 'cause it just got in the way.

    Thus far,

    1) To do dishes? No

    2) In the shower? No

    3) To wash your hands? Only when I'm out in public, but I dry my hands thoroughly cause it feels gross.

    4) While you're sleeping? No

    5) At work? Yes, but I just work in an office.

    6) At the gym? Haven't tried that one yet, but likely not since my gym is close to my house and I'd go after work.

    8) At the beach or in the pool? No, for the same reasons as the other water ones.

    9) When you're traveling? I would prefer not to. If it becomes a real issue I think I may want a cheaper ring to travel with.

    10) Anywhere else I may have forgot?

Anything messy or home improvement oriented I don't wear it.

I wear a claddaugh ring on a near-daily basis, though I'm not entirely sure how it'll change when there's a diamond attached to the ring, but I do know my normal ring behavior.

    1) To do dishes? No

    2) In the shower? Sometimes

    3) To wash your hands? Sometimes - in public, yes, at home, no.

    4) While you're sleeping?  No, I have a nice little ring stand on my dresser that I put it on at night.

    5) At work?  Yes.

    6) At the gym?  No.  My fingers swell while I'm working out, especially running.  If I could, I'd leave it at home.  If I'm going from work, I'd probably leave it in my glove compartment before getting out of my car.

    8) At the beach or in the pool?  Probably not, I've heard horror stories about rings going missing in sand, and people finding them years later with those metal detectors.  I'll wear my wedding band more frequently to these things, but not the engagement ring.

    9) When you're traveling?  Depends where.  In most of Western Europe, sure.  In most of Latin America, nope.  I'll wear my claddaugh ring instead since it has no stones.

    10) Anywhere else I may have forgot?  Dunno, don't think so!

I like that I will have my claddaugh ring to wear in its place anytime I feel uncomfortable having my engagement ring on.  Once I'm married, I plan on wearing the two rings together most of the time, but there will probably be plenty of times when I just wear the wedding band.

    1) To do dishes?
no, I take it off when I do dishes and put it in a small bowl on the counter.

    2) In the shower?
no.  I have very long and curly hair.  my ring sits very high and it gets caught in my hair.  any time I do anything with my hair, it comes off and it stays in its little bowl until I am done messing with my hair.  in fact, in the mornings I only put it on when I'm about to walk out the door!

    3) To wash your hands?
sometimes - in public, yes.  at home, it depends.  sometimes I take it off and sometimes I don't.  no real reason why.

    4) While you're sleeping?
no.  when I go to bed I put it in a decorative bowl on my vanity and don't put it on until I'm leaving in the morning.

    5) At work?
    yes.

    6) At the gym?
I don't work out at a gym, I work out at home or outside.  it just depends on how intense the work out is, and how swollen my hands feel.

    8) At the beach or in the pool?
I haven't worn it in the summer yet so I don't know.  probably not.

    9) When you're traveling?
    I'm still debating on this.

    Do/Would you wear your ring....

    1) To do dishes? Nope. If I'm good about it I'll go and put it in its box before I wash the dishes, otherwise I put it in my pocket and put it right back on when I'm done.

    2) In the shower? Yup, I like to give my ring a little shower while I give myself a shower :)

    3) To wash your hands? Yes, keeps it clean and sparkly.

    4) While you're sleeping? Yes. I miss my ring when it's not on, even while I'm sleeping  haha. Though I may want to reconsider- had a slight mis-hap last week when the corner of my ring scratched FI in the nipple as I was turning over in bed Surprised

    5) At work? Yes, but I sit at a desk all day.

    6) At the gym? No, my fingers swell and I'm afraid to damage it.

    8) At the beach or in the pool? Definitely not in the pool, and I probably wouldn't wear it at the beach either. Definitely not while doing any water sports.

    9) When you're traveling? Depends where.

    10) Anywhere else I may have forgot? Don't think so.

    1) To do dishes? Yes

    2) In the shower?
I take my ring off at night and take showers when I wake up in the morning, so it's not that I wouldn't wear it in the shower, it's just that I haven't put it on for the day yet.

    3) To wash your hands?
    Yes

    4) While you're sleeping?
No- don't wanna poke FI's eye out

    5) At work?
Yes. I have to wear latex gloves at work so I have to turn my ring around so I don't poke through the glove. But I still wear it.

    6) At the gym?
    Yes

    8) At the beach or in the pool?
    Hmm maybe not

    9) When you're traveling?
It depends where and how long. FI and I are going to take a year off and travel around the world so I likely wouldn't wear it then. But for short vacations and stuff, I'd still wear it.

I'm NEY, but I think I will  most likely wear my ring everywhere. I currently have a promise ring that i've been wearing for over 3 years...and I almost never take it off. I think most rings are made to handle the activities you listed...and if you have it insured or have a warranty with the jeweler, it shouldn't be a problem anyway. :)

I'm a wear my jewelry all the time kind of girl. I'm NEY, but here's what I plan on:

    1) To do dishes? Yes

    2) In the shower? Yes

    3) To wash your hands? Yes

    4) While you're sleeping? Yes

    5) At work? Yes

    6) At the gym? Sometimes. Depends on the type of work out (ie yoga, yes, pole dancing, no)

    8) At the beach or in the pool? Usually. The only exception will be when I'm doing water sports (ie wake boarding).

    9) When you're traveling? I wear my 'promise ring' travelling, and will probably continue to do so even after I'm engaged/married instead of my e-ring.

    10) Anywhere else I may have forgot? Basically, I will rarely be taking it off. My 'promise ring' almost never leaves my finger.

Glad you asked this.  I have no idea whether to take it off or not.  And i got it in my bed the more I take it off, the more chances I have to lose it.  I think I've only taken it off the second night (it was sore) and to put lotion on.. so you can imagine my answers below are all yes

    Do/Would you wear your ring....

    1) To do dishes?  FI does them, but yea I wear it when I help.

    2) In the shower?  Yes

    3) To wash your hands? Yes

    4) While you're sleeping? Yes, I twist it around so the stone in on the inside of my hand.  It's a high setting so it'll scratch my face otherwise.

    5) At work? Yes, I'm just a desk job

    6) At the gym? Yes, but decided if I lift my arms I might take it off.

    8) At the beach or in the pool?  I think i'm going to take it off in this case...

    9) When you're traveling?  i'm still thinking about getting a plain band if we travel like out of the country... for reg travel, i'll wear it

    10) Anywhere else I may have forgot?  Nope, that covers it.

I had a ring with a cross on it that I only took off if I was wearing gold (instead of my normal silver) for almost 7 years. Now I have black hematite rings that I wear every day unless I'm not wearing black (again, that doesn't happen often). So I'm anticipating wearing my engagement ring all-day, every-day. And after I have the wedding ring, I'm with Cate... I'll wear the wedding ring all the time, but may occasionally take the e-ring off.

    Do/Would you wear your ring....
    1) To do dishes?

I don't do dishes, DH does. But on the off-chance I do... I usually don't bother taking off my ring.

    2) In the shower?

Yes. Didn't used to, but now I do.

    3) To wash your hands?

    Yes.

    4) While you're sleeping?

Usually. At first I didn't because DH was worried I'd poke his eye out in my sleep.

    5) At work?

Yes. My job involves answering a phone and doing homework. Nothing risky there.

    6) At the gym?

Sometimes. If I were lifting weights I'd wear my promise ring instead. Or just my band.

    8) At the beach or in the pool?

    Sometimes.

    9) When you're traveling?

We haven't really gone anywhere, but I probably would.

    10) Anywhere else I may have forgot?

I can't think of anything. Gardening? I'd probably take it off.

I was much more worried about my ring when I first got it. Now, I'm used to wearing it and it's insured. So... no biggie.

    3) To wash your hands?
    Yes I do.

    4) While you're sleeping?
No I do not (my fingers swell at night, a lot!).

    5) At work?
Yes I do, I work in an office.

    6) At the gym?
I do not belong to a gym but I do wear it when I go for runs and what not.

    8) At the beach or in the pool?
    No I do not.

    9) When you're traveling?
    Yes I do.

    10) Anywhere else I may have forgot?
I do not wear it anywhere where I think I may damage or loose it. Such as I will not wear it when we go on our land adventures on our honeymoon because I do not want to take a chance with it when I am rock climbing and what not. I also do not wear it when I am applying lotion. It gets all yucky.

    Do/Would you wear your ring....

    1) To do dishes?
No. I'm paranoid about it slipping off and going into the garbage disposal.

    2) In the shower?
No. We have a drain cover that slides off, and again, I'm paranoid it will slip off and go down the drain.

    3) To wash your hands?
Yes. I worry less about losing it while I'm focused on my hands already. I make sure to rinse really thoroughly to avoid the dermatitis Oceana mentioned.

    4) While you're sleeping?
    Yes

    5) At work?
    Yes

    6) At the gym?
I take mine off when I'm doing weights, but I work out at home, so just setting it by the off/on button to my TV usually ensures I'll see it and put it back on when I'm done working out.

    8) At the beach or in the pool?
No. On my HM, I hid my ring in our room when we left to go to the beach. If I knew I was going to the pool at a friend's house, I'd put it in a pocket or my purse, but at my apartment pool, I just leave it in our apartment where I normally leave it if I"m doing dishes or showering or cleaning.

    9) When you're traveling?
    Yes

    10) Anywhere else I may have forgot?
I take mine off if I'm cleaning with harsh chemicals. I've heard the chemicals can erode or pit your prongs and your stone can fall out. I have a warranty from my jeweler that they will replace the center stone if this should happen as long as I get inspections every 6 months, but still. I'd rather take the smart steps to avoid it as much as possible.

    1) To do dishes?
Yes but I take it off sometimes depending on how much my ring is spinning on any particular day.

    2) In the shower?
No - I always take it off in the shower.

    3) To wash your hands?
Yes - I'm usually in a rush and stopping in the bathroom before class or work so I just leave them on when I wash my hands

    4) While you're sleeping?
    Yes

    5) At work?
Yes - I'm a tutor so I'm not exactly dealing with chemicals and whatnot at work

    6) At the gym?
    I don't work out

    8) At the beach or in the pool?
At the beach - No way. I leave all my jewelry at home if we go to the beach.
The pool - depends. Is it a chlorine or salt water pool? Chlorine - I take them off. Salt water - I usually leave them on.

    9) When you're traveling?
    Yes

Turns out I'm actually pretty bad about wearing my ring.  I wear it when I go out, but once I'm home, I take it off as soon as it's time to wash my hands, shower, clean, go to bed, etc., and then I don't put it back on until I'm leaving the house again.  I'm not even wearing it right now.
