If you were a character on a TV show, who would you be?
Can I say Sookie Stackhouse so I can justifiably make out with Alexander Skaarsgard all the time? :)

Hmmm...that's a tough one. Like, really tough. I would say I'm part Kari Byron from Mythbusters (science nerd that thinks blowing sh*t up is totally awesome), part Detective Beckett from Castle (definitely have those walls up that are hard for people to break down), part Beth Chapman from Dog the Bounty Hunter (I swear about as much as her and I don't take a whole lotta sh*t from people, but family is my entire life). A little Christina Yang in there too.

God, that was a hard question. lol

Dude, all I could think about was Betty White and her dusty muffins. ::Sobe everywhere::

On a genuine note, I friggin love muffins. Nom nom nom. Whole Foods has pumpkin and zucchini muffins that I would probably commit a mild felony for.

    What is your favorite smell?
The air after a really juicy rainstorm. Burning wood. The ocean. Eucalyptus. Cologne on my FI's shirt. Fresh cinnamon and pumpkin baking in the oven. Fresh basil.

On the flip side, the smell of mashed potatoes makes me vomit. True story.

Yay!  I'll have to check out the smoked paprika since we've been making a bunch of our own jerky. Do you know they actually sell Badia all over the country now?  I found them in my parents' grocery store in Rhode Island.  So ladies, keep an eye out - it's much cheaper than McCormick's spices, and really tasty!

Check at Penn Dutch grocery in Hollywood. They have a TON of different Badia spices for, like, $1.30 a jar. We go through regular paprika like water, so I got one of the big restaurant-sized jars there for $4.

Not to mention the meat there is friggin fantastic and dirt cheap to boot. :) Their produce is pretty inexpensive as well, and not bad, but I prefer hitting the local farmers markets.</div>

Worth the drive, and we've got some good farmers markets down here to make the whole trip worthwhile. We like Yellow Green Farmers Market (weekends only) and Brothers Farmers Market (all week) for produce. BFM has organic stuff at non-organic pricing, which is kick ass, and it's the only place I've been able to find Meyer lemons and blood oranges down here. There's also a gourmet farmers market on Las Olas in Fort Laud on Sundays that has some really good stuff.</div>

You're incredibly awesome. I am in total awe of your awesomeness. (ps. When I come back to SC, we need to have a GTG - just sayin.)

    What's your favorite bumper sticker?
I've got one on my car that says "Hurricane Evacuation Plan: 1) Grab beer. 2) Run like hell." It cracks me up. I'm also a big fan of the "my kid beat the crap out of your honor roll student" ones.

If you lived under the sea, what animal would you be?
A big ass monster shark. BOOYAH! Nah, actually, I'd probably be a sea lion. I'd have fun f*cking with sharks and scuba divers.

    Can you do magic tricks?
I can make a pencil disappear. ::table slam::

Welcome to nerd talk, ladies. You've been forewarned. :)

Are you going to the AES meeting at JMIH this summer in Minneapolis?
I might be. My FI will hopefully (fingers crossed) be presenting this year, and I promised him I'd go if he did. I really wanted to go last year, but I was sick as a dog and couldn't get any more time off work. I was super jealous, because he ended up running into a bunch of people I worked with at Mote [Marine Laboratory]. I'm still waiting to find out if I'm going to M&M in Nashville in August, and that's a deciding factor.

What is your current research on?
Currently, I'm not actually working on sharks. My dissertation research is on the eye vasculature of reef fish. I'm looking at a specific structure - the choroid rete - which provides the blood supply to the retina. I'm basically comparing the anatomy of the structure and the functioning of the retinal mitochondria to see if there's a difference between fish that hunt during the day and fish that hunt during the night. Not exactly what I wanted to be doing, but it was a ready-made, fully funded, fully-committeed project, I couldn't pass it up. The nice thing is that the techniques I'm using can be directly parlayed into sharks that have an ocular rete (like big eye threshers) and musclewarmers (great whites, makos, etc.).

When I'm not doing that, most of my research has been focused in sawfish, particular the smalltooth and largetooth sawfishes. My masters thesis was focusing on population dynamics of the two species along the coast of North and Central America. I was lucky enough to do a lot of tag-and-release stuff with them (and coastal shark species) during my time at Mote which was pretty incredible.

Which school are you a candidate at?
A private university in Florida. Sorry, I'm really protective of my privacy/ID. :/

    Favorite elasmo of all time?
Smalltooth sawfish. They make me squee like a little girl at a Twilight convention. I'm also a big fan of great whites and great hammerheads. We had two great hammerheads that I was responsible for feeding/taking care of when I was at Mote - they were INCREDIBLE. One of them is at the Georgia Aquarium now, so if you're ever there, tell Scarlett I said hi. :)

Please tell me you know what a sea lion is. Please, please, please...lol

Sea lions like to f*ck with divers all the time. They'll swim circles around them, blow bubbles in their faces, etc. It's pretty hilarious. They can be nasty buggers too (I know someone who was bit by one once), but for the most part, they just like screwing with people/other animals.

I'm a jokester, so that would probably be my best option. lol

What is the meaning of life?
For the entirety of mankind, I have no friggin clue. For me, my prescription for life is pretty much this:

    Cherishing your loved ones.

Treating your body as a temple, and doing your best by it.

Living your life to the fullest every single day.

Eating good food, drinking good booze, having good sex, having good conversations.

Not having regrets, but rather learning something from all the shitty stuff that happens to you and using that knowledge to improve yourself/your life.

    Constantly learning, exploring, challenging yourself.

Treating other people with respect and dignity whenever possible, but not letting yourself become a doormat or a whipping boy.

Standing up for what you believe in, even if it's the unpopular opinion.

Establishing a career, but knowing how to balance it with your family.

Working to live, not living to work.

Laughing at least once a day.

Picking yourself up and dusting yourself up when life throws you sh*t, and putting forth/passing along some goodness into the world when you life hands you happiness.

Believing in someone or something beyond yourself.

Making a complete and total arse of yourself every once in a while, and knowing how to laugh at yourself.

Speaking the truth, even if it hurts.

Being appreciative of all the good AND the bad in your life.

Letting yourself cry when you need to, scream when you need to, spend the entire day in pjs with a pint of Ben & Jerrys when you need to, but knowing when to say enough is enough and moving on with your life.

Treating yourself good, with healthy food and exercise and yoga and good quality sleep, but letting yourself enjoy an occasional "bad" thing (kettle chips, crap tv, chocolate, trashy romance novels) - finding a balance.

[QUOTE]What is the meaning of life? For the entirety of mankind, I have no friggin clue. For me, my prescription for life is pretty much this: Cherishing your loved ones.
