PW: What are your thoughts about dating your ex high school teacher?

This morning, I read a story (I'll try to find the link) about a couple getting engaged.  But get this.  The man was the girl's high school math teacher.  He's seven years older than she is.  They began their relationship when she turned 21, so he was 28, I gather.

Legally, I guess there really isn't anything wrong with it.  And apparently they didn't have any type of relationship while the girl was a student, but.. Idk how I feel about the creepiness of it all.

To me it depends on if they kept in touch.  If they ran into each other years later and then started dating, no problem in my opinion.

He found her on a social networking site (I can't remember if it was myspace or facebook or if they said.. i really wish i could find that link.) when she was a year graduated.

Ehhhhh... questionable. If he just stumbled across her while looking for a bunch of students, fine. If he looked for her in particular... creepy!

I don't think its that odd, I have heard weirder things, but maybe its because my mom and sister are both teachers. There are two teachers from my high school who  married past students of theirs, however I know at least one of them was sleeping with the teacher in high school. This was also before the popularity of social networking

Agreed. Otherwise, I don't think it matters now that she's of age and no longer his student.

I guess since there wasn't anything going on when she was his student its ok. But the whole thing seems a little weird to me and just because they say nothing went on when she was a student doesn't make it true.

I don't think it's that big a deal. I mean it'd be creepy if he was lik a bizzillion years older than her or if they started in HS but since they're both adults I don't think its that big of a deal.

Shoot, I can think of at least one teacher, I wouldn't mind if he looked me up and said "hey!" hahaha...

I don't think it's that weird . However, that could be because a girl I know just married her high school teacher but she started dating him when she was in high school still. She was in an accident and had to have a tutor because she couldn't go to school. When he started tutoring her, he was married and his wife was pregnant. Like a month after his wife gave birth, he left his wife and the day after her graduation they "announced" they were dating. He was young but it was still a very weird situation.

Oh, there are definitely 2 past teachers that I'd totally date (if I didn't have FI, of course). 

I think if she was younger than it'd be an issue - and actually that's not a big age difference at all.  I think there are plenty of people that have crazier stories about how they met their spouse.

Seven years isn't a big age difference so I dont think it would matter if he were her teacher or not. I know a few teachers I wouldn't have minded dating outside of highschool. If it were a large aghe difference in general I would give a side eye, whether he was her teacher or an accountant.

At my HS, there was a rule where teachers could not date students or alumni. One teacher used to always joke about breaking the rules because she graduated from there and married her hs sweetheart who also graduated from there.

The age difference or the fact that he was her teacher doesn't creep me out at all. 

However, the idea that he waited a year after she graduated high school then looked her up makes me wonder if he was lusting after her while she was in high school and underage.   Maybe he happened to look up a bunch of previous students one day, maybe not.  Whatever floats their boats though... I wouldn't be caught dead with any of my h.s. teachers though, none of them were young or hot though, haha!

I work at a school and our head of upper school married a former student.  He was her track coach while she was in school.  He's mid 50's she's mid 20's.  That's creepy!

I don't think the age difference is what makes me give it a side eye. I think it's that he looked her up and she was the only student that was on his profile only a year after she graduated.

The closest BF has ever been to being my teacher was showing me how to us a Wii when it first came out!

I think in that circumstance it's a little weird.  Not like pedophile creepy but she's not that far removed from high school so I worry about her not having time to date other guys, live on her own, etc.  If I came across my old high school teacher (and I have one in mind ) at 30 and he was 37 I think that would be a different story.

Well I'm glad to hear that it was just 2 and not all your teachers (regardless of age, hotness, gender etc.)  just because you had a "thing" for teachers like some women have a thing for a man in uniform or what have you.  And oops, sorry for saying FI... I know he's your BF!

1) I can't see much in terms of the 7 year age difference. I'm 26, FI's 33. Enough said.

2) We actually had this happen at my high school. Teacher was fresh out of undergrad (22). Started dating one of his students right after she graduated, they got married right after she turned 21. They divorced two years later when she caught him cheating...with one of his current students. Eep.

On the flip side, we had another teacher (in his 50s) who ran into a former student that he had had in his first year of teaching 10 years after the fact (I think there was 6 or 7 years age difference). They ended up getting married and now they have two kids. So I guess it depends on the cirumstances.
