Quite Possibly the Worst Phone Interview Ever (LONG)

*just a bit of a rant*

Last week I sent a resume off for a potential job.  I received a phone call asking if I would like to set up an interview.  I told the lady I wanted to know more about the position before I took the time to interview because the ad just said "Customer Service Representative".  Well, McDonald's cashiers are CSRs, so I just wanted some details to know if it was even worth my time.  She set up a phone time with me, which was just a few minutes ago.

Right on time she called me up and started asking me questions.  Tell me about your role in X-Company.  Tell me about your role in Y-Company.  And so on down the line for the past 10 years.  Well both X&Y deal with youth organizations so I tried talking to the lady about what I did, and she just kept asking "So what was your role?"
I finally said "Are you familiar with **organization**  (in this field of industry she certainly should be!)  and she replied "yes I am".
So I said "Well then asking me what I did should be a given"  and then rattled off a few more of the duties.

She wanted to know my 5 year plan, where I see myself with their company, etc.
Next she started asking salary.  I said "Well, that was my whole point in talking to you, I know NOTHING about this position.  All I saw was an ad in the paper for CSR."  She told me a little about the position and then asked again what I want for salary.  I told her what I made a X, and she said "Oh gosh, no we can't pay that.  It's about $10,000 less than that.  Would you be ok with that?"  I told her no, with travel and time it would not be worth it.

Then the dummy started asking questions about other things on my resume.  I had to finally say "I'm sorry, I don't think this will be the right match for me.  Good luck in finding a candidate."  At this point, she didn't understand what I said, so I repeated it again.  Lady asks "Are you sure?!"  So I thanked her and hung up.

The salary- breaks down to the same as what fast food workers in my area are making right now.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

  • Yikes... clearly this lady can't take a hint.

Kudos to you for opting for a phone interview first. Obviously this is not the right job for you.

Wow.... sounds like she shouldn't be doing that for a living anymore...

  • I kinda had an attitude with her.  I felt like the whole thing was a joke.  It's a national company and I know she's just doing her job, but she lacked people skills (hence the phone interview apparently).  I don't even recognize the area code where she called from, and I see their company on a lot of listings.  I wonder how many other people have had an experience with her?

  • I got a P/T job at a fast food joint to help pay for the wedding and other little things to help us out. I make the same as some of my friends who have actual responsibility and it is sad how companies don't think that good service is deserving of good pay. I know that they are only trying to make money too, but they should be willing to pay their employees a fair/decent/competetive wage for the stress/responsibilities they will have.

Sorry it didn't work out for you, but at least you learned enough about it to not have to travel far for an in-person interview for nothing.

  • wow. that sounds sucky. sorry you didnt have any luck there. she doesnt sound like a fun person to work with
  • Yeah, in this day and age employers know they're in the power seat and aren't afraid to take advantage with low wages.  It's sort of how real estate goes through buyers markets and sellers markets? Right now it's definitely an employer's market.  I know. I just ended 19 1/2 months of unemployment. I'm a seasonal cashier at a huge retailer making 50 cents above minimum wage. I've got a bachelor's degree from a good private college, but this is how it is now (especially where I am).
