Found out I can't resize my rings.

FI proposed to me with his mother's ring. She is a widow and this ring was from her and his stepfather's marriage that was very meaningful to both of them so I'm honored to wear it. It's part of a  beautiful set. It's at least 3 sizes too big for me, plus I've been losing weight, so I've been wearing it on my middle finger until I'm ready.

I brought  jewelry I don't want in to a jeweler to see what it was worth for gold (not worth selling...) but I had them look at my rings to see what it will cost to resize them.

Apparently, they cannot be resized because of the way the setting is, the diamonds would fall out. I didn't know that at all. The band would have to be completely redone....I'm told $400-$500 just for one of them.

I'm not heartbroken, I love the sentiment of the rings but I have felt like I'm wearing her rings...so I appreciate the opportunity to make them my own a little bit....but that's a new expense I wasn't expecting, for sure.

You'll never be subject to a cash bar, gap, potluck wedding, or b-list if you marry a Muppet Overlord.

  • Boooo!  Have you tried another jeweler just to see if they have a different opinion/price?
  • I talked to a chain in the mall. I'm going to go to a smaller local "mom and pop" kind of jeweler I think.  My friend had a ton of work done to re-do her ring and didn't have that much cost.

This is the e-ring. The band is in another room. I can get that when i get up. Sorry, I know it looks dumb on my middle finger but its like 2-3 sizes too big for my ring finger. I'm also 2 sizes bigger than I was a few years ago...still working on losing the weight.

  • it's not really cloudy like the photo. don't know why it came out like that
  • Your ring is absolutely gorgeous. Go to an independent jeweler that is an artist and goldsmith. Chain stores don't employ those.
  • I would never have any "work" done at a chain store. I was there to try to sell my jewelry.  Also, FI was looking at rings (ALL the chain stores have the SAME men's bands).

She said no jeweler would size it because it would cause too much stress on the setting by removing it at the bottom. I didnt even know they could remove it from the sides. Thanks for thinking of that. I'll def get another opinion
  • Ditto to what the others said. Chain stores know as much about jewlrey as mcdonalds employees know about gourmet cooking. For example, my mother recently took her ring in to be re fitted since her aquamarine was loose in the setting. The chain store she went to said they wouldn't do it since 'they are irradiated and therefore a hazard to their employees'. I rolled my eyes so hard I almost ended up in China.

It's like they think it's from Chernobyl or something...holy moly.
  • Yeah the balls are really uncomfy. I don't want to wear those for the rest of my life.
  • I second or third whichever it is now stages comment about getting a second opinion. Chain stores no nothing about modifying jewlery. Also look into a ring guard for now if you want to wear it on your ring finger. They are less annoying than the balls.
  • I definitely agree with finding a jeweler that actually does design for an opinion.  If they can't resize, they can probably redesign it in a way that preserves the original design, but still makes it "yours" for a reasonable cost.
  • I tried a ring guard. Also annoying unfortunately. It kept cutting into my finger.
  • I just randomly thought of something you could ask if the second opinion comes out the same. See if they can add gold to the band to thicken it inside and therefore size it down. Not ideal, but better than nothing.

    thanks for the additional idea.

My wedding is in October so I have some time to work with and I'm trying to lose more weight. I realized i am a size and a half larger than the last time I bought a ring. I only want to do this once. I figure I'll call a few jewelers and exchange a few photos to see what they say preliminarily so I can budget and then go in July and be serious.

I hope I can come out of it inexpensively. If not, I've sold some of my old jewelry the past few days...so I guess it might go right to this.

Lurker here coming out of hiding for a fellow NH girl. Your ring is beautiful! If you're in the Concord area, try Capitol Craftsman and Romance Jewelers. My FI designed my ring there. They are fantastic! ETA: The ampersand in the jeweler's name didn't show up because I'm on my phone, so I added "and." Rookie mistake.
