I think it's also based at least partly in slavery since slaves couldn't be legally married, so "jumping the broom" was a way to show the community they were "married."

I don't know why the hell anybody would want to incorporate that into their wedding ceremony, but to each their own I suppose.

Somebody on Four Weddings did it.  I was surprised to see it.  I don't judge cultures from the outside, but I don't understand why someone would want to keep that tradition going.

Where on earth did you get this information? Because that's totally not true. It really does have something to do with slavery.

Ah.  I live in Minnesota, and I haven't seen it done up here.  I know that it happens in some European cultures, and I remember reading that the Gypsies did it (I don't know how true that is though).

But for black folks, yeah, it was based at least partly in slavery Tay.  Where did you think it came from?

Yes.  And my also-black mother got a MA in History at Columbia, and more than a few of her classes were in African American studies (or as much of it as you could learn back in the 70's).  She also took Swahili as her language.  So if she says that it has to do with slavery, as did the history classes I took in high school and the sociology classes I took in college, I'm going to go ahead and go with that.

    Anything else, hatter?

  • Its a theory that it was based on slavery.  my ancestors haved jumped the broom forever and they were never slaves they moved to Europe from Africa and then to the US.  So unless you are calling my mom a liar than no its not based on slavery.  And however it started it dont matter because lots of couples do it because its tradition and its fun go look on the African American board if you don't believe me.

Ok, I don't know a TON about this, but just to play devil's advocate, just because something is associated with slavery doesn't mean that it doesn't have deeper roots than that, right?  I mean, if it's something that Africans did IN Africa, and then continued to do in the US while they were enslaved here (hence the tradition coming overseas) doesn't necessarily make it horrible just because it's associated with slavery.  KWIM?

And exactly how is THAT website any more of a logical research tool than Wikipedia?  Seriously?  You're going to try making fun of someone assuming they went to a website for their information....and then post a website with your information as proof they're wrong?  Doesn't that hit the irony button even just a tiny teeny bit for you?  At all?

Anyways, I'm still going to take my mom's and my own college and high school history books and classes over a random website on the interwebz.  Sorry.
