    I said it's at least PARTLY associated with slavery.  I personally wouldn't choose to have something partly associated with slavery in my wedding ceremonies, especially when the origins of it aren't historically documented as starting anywhere other than slavery.  And from what my mom has told me about it (we had a big long discussion when I first got engaged), and what I learned in college sociology, while the broom has special signifiance in some African cultures, and that there are ceremonies having to do with a broom in certain African cultures, the actual "jumping over a broom" ceremony as a way to recognize a union isn't acutally documented anywhere in Africa prior to slavery.  And it is fully recognized that the jumping a broom ceremony only became popular among Africans or African Americans as a way to be "married" because they couldn't be legally married during slave times in America. 

    Once again, I'm only talking about AA traditions because I know it's used in some European traditions and whatnot as well, and I don't know nearly enough about that to comment on it.

    Just as a side note, this source (considered legitimate enough to be included on Google Scholar) talks a bit about the tradition of "jumping the broom"...I don't see why folks get so angry about this either way. If you want to represent a ceremony in a positive way, good for you. If you don't wish to include it because you find it offensive or oppressive or whatever, same. Just let folks run their own weddings.
