East Coast Knotties-

So, I'm probably behind on the news what with work and school taking up ALL my time, but just heard about this big hurricane Sandy that could be really bad...

Be safe. :)

Last year we had a bad storm at the same time.  They pushed back Halloween.  Sandy may push it back again this year.  This should be interesting.

Gotta love my luck.  Of course a catastrophic storm would happen the week of my wedding.

I'm not unconcerned, but I am trying not to freak. My mom called and, being a mom, said "Don't park near any trees." Well we have two trees next to the driveway. I said, "We'll probably put the cars in the garage." She said, "A tree fell on our garage during Hurricane Gloria." I was like, um, what are my options then, Mom? We have gas everything and city water, so if we do lose power, we still have water and a stove at least. We filled both cars with gas. Last year I had friends who ran out of gas because none of the gas stations in the area had power. They're saying this storm could suck worse.

It will be memorable : )

I'm again looking at my floor to ceiling windowed house with only glass shower doors in the bathroom and wondering where to go if tornadoes pop up in this mess. Right now putting a loveseat infront of a first floor walk in closet seems to be the only option. Really hoping that the skylights don't leak.

We share a beach down a set of stairs with our neighbors. Our wall is concrete, but theirs is made of wood and has a serious bulge from years of storms. I need to go out and take pictures of the beach so I can tell our kids there was a time when there even was a beach, not just a pile of rubble. What pisses me off is that the neighbors are rich and have the money to fix their wall, but they don't do it because they spend most of their time at their other houses and their boat is too big to keep here.

I'm in Center City Philly!  The outside of our apartment building (8 stories) was recently resealed to stop horrendous leaks.  This storm will be a pleasant test of their new system.  During Irene last year, we had every available plastic container catching rain water - that was so fun!  Haha.

Honestly, just remember - Irene was a Category 1 coming up the coast in warm warm waters. Gloria was a Category 2 coming up in warm warm water.  It's later in the season now, waters are cooler than they would be during the summer and are far cooler up here than they are down in the Carribbean.  The storm will probably hit as a tropical storm or a very weak hurricane.  The cold front adds a complication that I'm more unclear on.

I'm mostly concerned about losing power.  The water pumps in our building aren't on back up power so we'll be without running water.  That's not so cool.  I'll be filling up the bathtub on Monday afternoon :-)

The Hurricane Gloria in '85? We lived just north of Boston for that one, I remember riding my Barbie bike in the basement and my parents boarding up the windows!
I hope everyone stays safe during Sally!

I'm not too far from Philly.  When one of my coworkers got back from lunch, he said that he stopped at a gas station to fill up his car (I believe in Conshohocken) and they were out of gas already.

We need groceries.  I'm dreading a trip to the grocery store this weekend.

I'm in Northern NJ like an hour outside of NYC.  We got hit pretty hard last year with the flooding.  Tons of rivers and lakes in my area.  Hopefully it's not as bad as they are predicting.

</div><div>North jersey always gets hit worse than us here in south jersey for some reason. I remember with Irene we lost power for an hour and the next morning the sun was shining and there was some branches in the front yard, that was it. Idk if you got that snow in October last year, but we had no snow whatsoever. So strange</div>

My daughter's wedding is this Sunday. I'm worried about flight cancellations for the out of state guests. The weather forecasts are starting to freak some of them out. Our gas stations already have long lines. I still have my stash of supplies from our October catastrophe of last year, so at least I didn't have to go to the grocery store.

Good luck lls. Hope everything is cleared up for your wedding at the end of the week. Best wishes.

thanks kmmssg. The storm is expected to hit us late Sunday, if it stays on it's current course. The wedding should be over by 8, so everyone should be safe and sound at their hotels before Sandy arrives. My concern right now is the flight cancellations that will likely result from this nasty storm. The out of state guests are worrying about how they will get home.

On a lighter note, when they did their menu selection, my FSIL requested 'Hurricanes' for their signature cocktail. Those should be popular.

    Stay safe everyone.

I'm just dreading this hurricane or whatever it will be when it hits DC.  The Marine Corps Marathon and 10k are on Sunday--luckily I'm only running the 10k, but if this storm moves any faster than planned, there's going to be 30,000 unhappy runners out there!  Wondering what it would take for metro to suspend above-ground service on Monday...stay safe everyone!

I'm working mornings Sat-Mon. So this sucks. I hope I can out of work on Monday and FI can work from home then too.
I'm worried about flooding on my work routes but not at home. So that's good. But it should all be very interesting.

Good luck Mid-Atlantic/NE people.    I've been through a bunch of hurricanes, they are so unpredictable you can't take them for granted.

FWIW - I got married in Cape May in 2008.  We had a strong tropical strom hit on our wedding day.  60+ MPH wind drive rains hit my under-a-tent-beach-wedding.   100% of us were OOT.  Yet it did not stop us from having a good time.  Actually it was more than a great time.  It was amazing.  The only thing I suggest to the couple is to have a good attitude.  If you are happy the guests will be.  If you are all sad and feeling sorry for yourselves the guests will be also.   I cried a few days before the storm to my DH, then I wiped the tears and WE made a point to not make a big deal over something we could not control.  Our attitudes set the tone for the wedding.

Remember at the end of the day you are still married and will have a great story to tell your grandchildren.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Ugh, hope it's blown itself mostly out by the time it gets to NYC. We just moved into a new apartment and the kitchen ceiling has peeling paint that I'm hoping (hopinghopinghoping) that it doesn't indicate the possibility of a leak. And I'm hoping it's not ridiculous when I'm trying to get to work come Monday...

Meh. I'm about 20 minute from Baltimore City and I'm fairly unconcerned. We have milk for the baby and wine for mama so I'm all set.

Last year, our daughter's baptism was the same weekend Irene hit. Some people didn't come, almost everyone left early and then it pretty much ended up drizzling. I'm still bitter about that. MD weather is so all over the place that I just don't think this will be a super big deal.

Heard it's supposed to hit Philly and NYC pretty hard, but the weather guy here  keeps saying they're still looking at the track and not sure of it's impact here.

</div><div>Metro is what's really worrying me - WTOP said that they're already double checking drains, which seems pretty standard, but I don't feel like that's ever been an issue here.  So, I'm really worried that they're going to have serious issues - which would probably shut DC down almost completely.</div>

DC folks - any idea what the likelihood of losing power to the actual city of DC (ie, not suburbs) is? I'm new to the area.

FI is convinced we'll be fine, but he's from Manhattan, and I'm not sure he's ever gone through a storm-related power outage before (I think just brown outs in the summer). El Nino in CA (15 years ago?) was pretty fun power outage wise. I think we went without power for 2.5 weeks?

There are mandatory evacuations in low-lying areas in several neighboring towns. I am starting to get really scared. Has anyone ever been evacuated before? If there is a mandatory evacuation in my town, I know we will be included. We have nowhere to go because all of our family lives in places that will also be evacuated. What do I do for my cat if we have to leave? I'm not going to leave him home in the storm. Do I bring a litter box with me to where ever we have to go? I'm sure we'll end up at the town hall or one of the schools.
